Comments: clouds and statue

Wow, this looks more like something you shot with a 10-22mm lense, so wide...

London has many views like this one, so I understand if you are confused ;D

That's Horse Guards Avenue looking towards the Thames from Whitehall. The large light grey building on the right is the Ministry of Defence. So now you know!

Looks like the bottom of Regent Street to me. Could be wrong, though, as I'm not a Londoner.

Wonderful picture. I'm pretty certain this is Whitehall, SW1. There's a google map/sattelite here:

Keep posting the glorious photos!

no doubt someone will soon let you know. Nice colours and I like the shadows too.

Nice shot! My best guess is that you were standing at the junction of Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade.

submit to flickrs guess where london :-)

You can just make out from the street sign in the bottom right that it's on Whitehall, which is the large and stately road leading from Trafalgar Sq to Westminster Abbey, and off of which is the small cul-de-sac, Downing Street, where the PM is based. I'd like to say I'd have known this without the sign, but there are so many statues in this part of London, most of them blustery looking military chaps like this one, that it's hard to distinguish one from another.

Take a look at the street sign in higher resolution, then Google Map it. :-) Have to say, I don't recognise it (despite being a Londoner). Street signs look like Westminster, so it's probably fairly central.

Long time viewer, first time commenter, BTW. Love the stuff. Do you use a polarizer *most* of the time, or is the high-contrast sky quality to most of your pics just a result of postpro?

Great old architecture. Lovely sky too. Was it really hot when you were there? I've heard they've had quite a hot spell lately.

i'm sure the Londoner visitors to your blog could readily tell you. :) As for the picture i thought it's a little too balanced on both sides. i might want to sacrifice a little of the architectural beauty on the left, but perhaps you had intended to keep the large piece of cloud intact.

The street sign at the bottom right looks like it says "Whitehall SW1" which puts you in Westminster.

It's been a long time since I've been in London, but I'm pretty sure that's Whitehall.

I'm pretty certain that's on Birdcage Walk, near the junction with Horseguards Parade, on the corner of St James's Park. Can't remember the name of the statue though.

The street sign at bottom right says Whitehall: I can't read the one round the corner from it, but it might be Horse Guards Avenue. Can you read it in the original pic? Or it could be Whitehall Place or Great Scotland Yard. 'Behind Whitehall' should cover it nicely :)

I've asked people online, and the opinion seems to be that it's Whitehall on the right, and you're looking down Horse Guards/Horseguards Avenue. The statue is said to be the 8th Duke of Devonshire (Lord Hartington). They even found another photo on flickr, by a user called tathei (29559909)

w00t! Here's an aerial view, showing the Ministry of Defence building at Whithall, with the park and other recognizable buildings in your photo across the road - homepage.ntlworld.com/alan-turnbull/MOD-main.jpg - from down the end of homepage.ntlworld.com/alan-turnbull/hysteria.htm
I did walk down Whitehall in my one very short stay in London, and the atmosphere there was different to anywhere else I went. Perhaps that's why the picture stirred something in my memory.

I'm happy to help even in so small a way someone who's given me such sustained enjoyment.

Whitehall, London.

I assume it is City, Out side the bank of england.

being from london this is bugging me now - i think it's somewhere near St James' Park, but i might be wrong.

Anyway, like the shot: great sky!

yep this is taken from whitehall, looking down horse guards ave. i get the bus past here every day on my way to work, but it doesn't usually look as atmospheric as this! beautiful sky and i like the subdued tones, it makes it look quite antiquated.
