Being a new yorker, I see this all the time. Usually the signs aren't this creative though. My favorite of all time though is " I'm not going to lie i need change for a beer" good stuff. I always give the homeless my doggie bags if i go out to eat. A non destructive way to help out.
Posted by Paul at July 23, 2006 01:59 AMthat reminds me of some signs i see around toronto...like one that said "Need money for pizza and pot"
well, at least they're honest...ha.
Great capture! Nicely done!
Posted by Thomas Solberg / Project neXus at July 23, 2006 04:01 AMI wonder is that works. Did you ask to take the picture or did u take a 'sneak shot'?
Posted by Huge Jass at July 23, 2006 04:36 AM*frowns* He looks to me like he's fit enough to work...
Posted by PlasticTV at July 23, 2006 05:36 AMExcellent stuff. Asks several questions about the society we live in.
Posted by Jon at July 23, 2006 08:18 AMThat's sad. =(
Posted by weiwei at July 23, 2006 08:56 AMwho would ask a bum for change and stand there and wait while he counts it out for you?
Posted by jorje at July 23, 2006 10:24 AMInteresting approach to street begging! Great shot.
Posted by Craig at July 23, 2006 12:45 PMNice... I would so give that dude money just for the creativity.
Posted by DC at July 23, 2006 01:19 PMHaha. Funny capture.
Posted by Jonathan at July 23, 2006 02:34 PMGtreat street photogaph. I like that all of the people passing by have their back to your lense. Very nice shot.
Posted by C2photo at July 23, 2006 03:05 PMgood take,i see story behind it.
give all race a balanced chance/
This reminds me of a lad in Ottawa who, while I still lived there in 1998, would sit with a sign, "Would rather beg than steal". It always puzzled me that he would not have been ready to work rather than beg. To watch him sit in the freezing weather, often with his cat huddled under a blanket with him was a sad but stupid sight. Begging is just too profitable for some to quit.
Posted by Hugh Petrie at July 23, 2006 04:42 PMThis is a very powerful image. Very well captured!
Posted by Mz_Skade at July 23, 2006 06:51 PMPowerful image but I still won't give my change.
Posted by Maran at July 24, 2006 12:58 AMIf you think about it, quite an evocative shot and a very true statement. Quite a coincidence that this is the second shot of a homeless person I have seen today
Posted by navin harish at July 24, 2006 05:04 AMgood shot and a an interesting approach from the beggar - hope he had a little luck or robbery will seem more attractive eventually.
Posted by david at July 24, 2006 08:45 AMgood picture, first comment
Posted by Cliff V at July 26, 2006 12:50 PMWhoa! Thank you for posting this picture, it just gave me the shivers. His sign is touching, it just reminds me that we humans need to look out for others.
Posted by MAary at July 26, 2006 03:39 PMThis kind of picture always impresses me. I certainly would have given him all of my change.
Posted by Christian at July 26, 2006 04:24 PMI wonder how much money that guy makes in a day.
Posted by Ed at July 27, 2006 09:50 AMAs his sign says "I don't rob people" I can't help but notice, I believe, that is an postal delivery box his glass is perched on?? hmmm!!!
Posted by val at July 27, 2006 11:28 AMI am sorry but your pictures are getting boring by the day. I don't know if its me keeping a track of every single photo or with time one gets out of new ideas. They're either clouds, building shot from the ground, view of the building from a top of another building... where did the creative Sam I used to know go???
Hope to see some great works from you. Cheers
Posted by xyz at July 28, 2006 03:51 PMyes, looks able to work.. YET what is the first question you answer AFTER "NAME" on an application to work... oh yeah"ADDRESS" .. so without and address there is no job and without the job there is no address..................
I find this shot eye opening... this man may sit here all day but how many actually stop to help...
We had a help the homeless "job fair" recently in Norfolk VA .. but it seemed to be a wasted effort... because again without an address there is no job and without the job there is no address......
and with a different perspective.. this could be a man who DOES work but his $5.15/hr salary is not enough to even feed his family.. ever thought of that? be kind
Regarding your question, my comment means "Black: Like the deepest parts of my soul"...it's a piece of a poem.
Posted by Ghazal at July 31, 2006 01:54 PMIt's funny how some of your shots generate so much debate. I think it is a sad photo but I would rather the fellow was out finding other ways of earning a living.
