Comments: telephones

Nice, love the red/orange stand out from the wall. Great capture.

I think this photo is totally amazingly awesome, although I can't say for certain exactly why...

Posted by Joy at July 8, 2006 05:35 AM

This is how they push everybody to buy a cellphone. Public Telephones of the room , unite !
Very expressive. This picture tells us the story of downscalling the public phones in the city by communication giant corporations.

Thanks to Digg I stumbled across your site, and I love it.

About the photo: Great image, I can only wish we had a subway where I live. This photo captures my memories of riding the subways, in New York and London.

Thank-you for reminding of these great underground worlds.

Why would they use the Spanish for "telephone"?

Posted by ken at July 8, 2006 08:13 AM

telephone"S" but only one phone?

Posted by tee at July 8, 2006 09:13 AM

Simple but very unique. I like it! Nice work!

Posted by Thomas Solberg / Project neXus at July 8, 2006 09:40 AM

Nice use of lines. But it looks like the one on the ground is a little off.

Posted by Andrew at July 8, 2006 09:48 AM

hmmmm... maybe at one time there was more than one phone there?

Posted by Freddie at July 8, 2006 10:22 AM

The sign's wrong. There's only one phone!

Posted by George Dunbar at July 8, 2006 11:36 AM

so funny!

Posted by effat at July 8, 2006 11:36 AM

Oh look it's telephoneS but there's only one

Posted by DAVE at July 8, 2006 11:38 AM

Great colors and detail.

I take it this appeals to your graphic design sense. Not too exciting however. Considering your quality eye you must have been running desperate for an image of the day. Not surprising considering how you've been covering the streets and picking them clean.

But I do have a question about what looks like a ramp or foot rest at the floor level of the phone. It isn't exactly clear why it's there and I've never seen such anywhere else.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at July 8, 2006 12:06 PM

Boring tile culture again, maybe it's the best way to keep the public facility nice maintenance.

Posted by Harlequinpan at July 8, 2006 12:11 PM

Victim of the cell phone. Looks like there used to be two. Now there is only one.

Posted by Gord McG at July 8, 2006 01:09 PM

is that the subway station?
yesterday we were at finch station, and the lady told us that we weren't allowed to take photos in the subway. anyways, love the red tiles
great shot

I left Toronto back in 2001 to move to Vancouver. I love it here, but your photos always make me miss T.O. a little. Like this one. Actually, anything subway related, I miss. Transit here really blows. Thanks for posting your beautiful work.

Posted by Luc at July 8, 2006 01:41 PM

That looks alot like St.Clair West, surreal shot.

Posted by Julian at July 8, 2006 01:50 PM

love the colour and central composition. the non-smoking sign helps the composition.

Posted by photoDude at July 8, 2006 02:00 PM

Can't claim to know the station, but if you give the radius of all the station it has to closer than, it would make it an easier guess. But if it is on the bloor line, then it is one of:
Islington, Old Mill, High Park, Dundas West, Ossington, Bathurst, Bay, Upstair on Bloor side of Yonge/Bloor, Sherbourne, etc...

My guess is either Bay, Ossington, Bloor, or Islington in that order.

Posted by selam at July 8, 2006 02:05 PM

oh wait..i didnt see your comment,
but im guessing its finch because of the red tiles

Posted by christine at July 8, 2006 02:36 PM

not a great shot. rather ordinary actually. you have done better and this just reminds me of a shot some tourist would take while visiting toronto...."here's a picture a phone booth in their 'subway system'"...i know you can do better.

Posted by tb at July 8, 2006 04:39 PM

very simple, great lighting and composition ;)
love your usual wide angle stuff :P

Spadina

Posted by stefanie at July 8, 2006 06:16 PM

Wow...you can even make a pay phone look great. I am surprised there are still payphones around.

Posted by Laurie at July 8, 2006 08:42 PM

today i was asked to stop taking pictures in a ttc subway station lobby. it was nearly empty and i was careful to avoid taking pictures of patrons. i don't get it.

Posted by bz at July 8, 2006 08:43 PM

Looks like the green of St. George station

Posted by Peter Mielke at July 8, 2006 09:39 PM

Could it be Kennedy Station? I'm not too sure.

Posted by m.y. at July 8, 2006 09:41 PM

Henry will know..............

Posted by FRANK SHAFER at July 8, 2006 10:33 PM

judging by the marks on the floor there might have been three telephones there originally.. a classic Sam photograph to me ;)

Posted by Susie at July 9, 2006 03:11 AM

I reckon it's the Bay Station. Love the contrast though. On the topic of the downsizing of public telephones, it was pointed out to me the other day by a friend that refuses to own a cell phone. "We're being pushed to extinction," he said.

Posted by alistair at July 9, 2006 09:20 AM

Thanks for asking Sam --

There are a few possibilities becuz of the colour of the white tiles.
1. Bay
2. High Park
3. Coxwell
4. Broadview

And it is possible it is St Clair. To save money, the TTC has used mismatched tiles, which makes this exercise difficult.

Posted by Matt at July 9, 2006 05:46 PM

plural for just one? :) love how the contrast of colours makes it stand out even more.

Posted by suki at July 9, 2006 06:19 PM

Is that a metro from Toronto? 'cause looks very similar to one of our metro here in montreal, and since the day after you had a picture of the old montreal. It would also make sense for the spelling. And Ken (from July 8th), that is not spanish. It is french. In spanish it would have been "Teléfono".

Posted by Jozef at July 10, 2006 06:32 AM

Yeah, it looks like the Bloor/Danforth line, though I'm not sure where.

Nice, classic shot of the subway system...

Posted by Susanna at July 10, 2006 09:06 AM

Nice! as ever.
I don't know why it seems to be Photoshoped. I mean the "TELEPHONES" seems to be printed on the original. I know it is not but it just seems to be, maybe because it is too black with no reflections.
But it is nice anyway.

Posted by Ali at July 11, 2006 11:59 AM

Of course, the typically dismissive critics, one tiny evolutionary step removed from full-on trolls, are failing to note that this is an excellent shot of signage. The plural/singular isue makes it *even better*.

Posted by Joe Clark at July 22, 2006 11:16 AM

I think it's Victoria Park, i remember it's funny there used to be 2 phones in there and they sealed it up and changed it to a more modern pay phone. I like it!

Posted by Alana at August 11, 2006 10:12 PM

Everyone who is being bothered for taking pictures, refer them to TTC By-law #1 Section 16 part b.
