Comments: phone sleeper

Excellent contrast between the two walls, maybe this guy didn´t ever call but it sures look very dramatic near the phone booths. Definitely I like the mood.

what a sad moody pic!
looks like he got nobody to call at all...

Posted by birgit at June 23, 2006 03:04 AM

my fave of yours of late. well composed, great contrast between the bricks and the blue wall.

Posted by chris at June 23, 2006 03:30 AM

Wonder what his story is...... I like that in photos, they make me curious.

Have a good and sunny weekend!

Posted by Chantal at June 23, 2006 06:40 AM

Brilliant Sam...you really captured a moment here. The not-so-wonderful side of Toronto life.

Posted by Dave Mac at June 23, 2006 07:42 AM

I've always thought this was the crummiest corner that shouldn't be the crummiest corner in our city. Disregarded and forlorn. It makes me sad. And yes, that is probably pee in the corner by the phone. I think the city should pay more attention to Bath and Queen so the people that hang out there can do so in a cleaner space.

A beautiful picture that says "please take care of me". It's funny how the building is called "the meeting place". Really!

The Assassin buys a box of tasty, wholesome, cheesy Cheez-Its from the local drugstore. While he's waiting at the phones for his next assassination assignment he decides to snack on his Cheez-Its. The Cheez-Its are hidden in his pack - he doesn't want to attract attention to himself with brightly colored boxes announcing that they contain Cheez-Its. While he's eating, crumbs fall onto his belly. He deftly bends his neck to gather all lost crumbs with his tongue. The Assassin leaves no evidence behind.

That's a bad way to sleep ... when he wakes up he'll have a neck-ache ... another interesting photo ...

i absolutely adore the colors.
the situation and composition are brilliant as well.
:)

would have named it "sleeper cell" *wink*

The Bells Ring For No One!!!

Posted by Ehsan Amertousi at June 23, 2006 09:54 AM

Ha! That's awesome! I forgot you took this picture of me, Sam!
For those who don't know, this is the aftermath of Sam and I out on a really crazy night! It started out with dinner and some light drinking, but eventually lead to a round of "Now, I'll hold the hobo, and you light him on fire!" I know, you don't think Sam is that kind of guy, but if you think about it, it's all art right? who are we to judge. These pictures are nice, but you should ask him to post some from his "burning Hobo" collection.
All in all this was a good night, but regardless of what we do, it always ends with Sam crying and wanting waffles. So happy waffle day you cry baby!

P.s. Futurama is coming back! not related, but important none the less.

A little bit dirty but vivid.

Posted by Harlequinpan at June 23, 2006 12:15 PM

That's one sad dude

Posted by Rob at June 23, 2006 12:25 PM

Great shot! I love the 'love' above the door and wonder what that's about. This is a great presentation of Toronto yuck, disintigration. How mess is controlling the world. The dude resting should find a more spiritually lifting location.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at June 23, 2006 12:36 PM

This one is just too sad!! he looks like a street person.I have seen some in Toronto and in Ottawa but no where near philly or NY, I love Canada!!!

Posted by dan jacobs at June 23, 2006 01:05 PM

Sam thank you for sharing the way you see the world around you.

Your eye and your images have influenced the way I see life in Toronto's streets.

Anyone can take a photo but it takes a special person to capture a moment...

Your images tell stories... thanks again for sharing.

Posted by Amy at June 23, 2006 02:24 PM

Wow, that guy looks pretty lonely!

BTW - Formula 1's coming to Canada... You going???

Posted by Ali at June 23, 2006 04:18 PM

Is anyone out there old enough to remember Murray Maclachlan's old song "Honkey Red"? This scene could well have been the inspiration for that great song. An even older inspiration could have been from Clarence "Frogman"Henry's "I Ain't Got No Home" This shot induces a feeling of sadness and isolation -woe for the human condition. Very emotional. Nice work.

My house sale didnt complete today - so i know how this guys feels..... i feel his pain !

Posted by Dan at June 23, 2006 05:30 PM

Thank you for this picture. I feel it captures reality as cold as it is. And in a sense it gives a real contrast to your other images. Eerie that no one has commented on this today.

Posted by Chris at June 23, 2006 06:59 PM

Wow... Incredible picture.

kinda ironic that "love" is written above the door.
I'm a photo student in high school and your work inspires me every day.

=)

Posted by Sylvia at June 24, 2006 12:09 AM

Did someone spraypaint "black currant" on the wall? Those things are...pretty tasty, I guess.

Posted by Victor Freeh at June 24, 2006 03:16 AM

tired? i love it.. sucker for graffiti though..

good catch.

Posted by tad at June 24, 2006 03:46 AM

touche! yes the coin has another side. Is this the ugliness, confusion and perhaps despair? Quite different from your elegance of yesterday.

Posted by Anne at June 25, 2006 07:44 AM

I love the contrast in colur betweeen the blue painted bricks and the untreated red brinks.

Posted by photoDude at June 25, 2006 06:28 PM

Sam: I find it very upsetting how so many of your viewers can look at this pathetic human image and comment only on the brick wall, the blue wall, the graffiti etc. How can anyone fail to notice the central figure-a downtrodden fellow human being. Perhaps the image is so discomforting that many people cannot focus on this sad fellow. Disturbing.

Posted by martin at June 27, 2006 03:16 PM

Wow, I never thought of that person as a person. I guess I looked at this picture as more of a real life cartoon. (drawn by Mignolia) Martin opened my eyes a little. I guess I'm so focussed on work and trying to provide for my family that I forgot to help out this man who has decided not to work. Or just to drink, or whatever the case may be for this man. I'm sorry, I will try to be a better person. Thank you for looking down on everyone from your high horse to let us know how we should feel.

Posted by keith at June 28, 2006 09:33 AM

Really nice. Great atmosphere, good capture. Like it a lot.

Posted by A thinker at June 28, 2006 11:31 AM

Sorry to take away from your work Sam but I think it had to be said... and Keith it was not an attack just an avenue for enlightenmant...
Now for the photo I LOVE how you have captured the less glamorous side of Toronto in this shot ...you seem to have an eye that catches anything and everything "we" the common folk take for granted. From the cracks and crevasses of a dried pomegranate to the beauty of your city hall, to the homeless man that some may pass everyday on their way to starbucks, yet never even notice. I LOVE THAT ABOUT YOU!! GO SAM!!!

Posted by Chrissy :) at June 28, 2006 02:21 PM

Excellent streetshot. Love the contrast between the walls. Maybe you should have come closer to the guy?

Posted by Cees at June 28, 2006 05:26 PM

NICE. love the blue wall contrasted with the red brick, and the man in blue against the brick wall. love the graffiti.

Posted by Serena at June 30, 2006 01:13 AM

It seems the Assassin must find a more secluded place to receive new assignments. Too much attention has been attracted. The Assassin does not like all of this unwanted attention. Why did this photographer post the Assassin's photo? Is the photographer a counter-Assassin? Is this "Sam", if that is his real name, working for the Russians? Maybe the next assignment will be to "take care of" this Sam. There can only be one Assassin in the city of Toronto, and his name is NOT Sam!
