Posted by London at June 22, 2006 01:43 AMHey,
I like the circularity in the picture, the way it completes itself. It seems somewhat musical in its waves and reflections. Just a quick question: do you post the technical info. for the pictures you take? Keep up the good work!

Posted by Agent Provocateur at June 22, 2006 10:17 AMFantastic! I've been loving these Toronto night shots. Your post work is really fabulous as well. Right on inspiring.
Posted by Daniel Seguin at June 22, 2006 10:19 AMOk this one REALLY rocks! Awesome composition. I like what you did with the color, making it almost black and white.
Posted by Nate at June 22, 2006 10:28 AMI found your website a few months ago while killing time. It is now one of my favorite sites that I frequent.
I took a quick trip to Torronto in October of 2003, and fell in LOVE! the city. What a great place to live in.
You shots are wonderful. You have a great tallent and look forward to a new image eachday.
Keep up the good work!
One of the things I love about your photos is the intense 'Toronto-ness' of them. I live in downtown Toronto but I am regularly given a fresh view of the city by your pics. It's delightful to see something I have seen a million times but to look at it in a new way. So thanks for that.
This shot of city hall is very glamourous. I find the actual space grim - except for the people skating in winter or strolling in summer, maybe gathering for a demonstration or looking at a (usually) bad painting in one of those giant art shows. The building was designed and built as a statement about how wonderful and lively our cities could be. But, somehow, the 'futuristic' shape now looks a bit sad, like a promise we haven't quite lived up to.
Your pic is a reminder of the building's genuine dramatic beauty. It is a glamourous promotional shot that captures that feeling. But what I like about the photo is the slightly 'ghostly' feel of the building - like the lighting of the spaceship in The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Like Professor Barnhardt says in that movie: "It isn't faith that makes good science Mr. Klaatu, it's curiosity." True for photography as well, I think.
Posted by Steve Bingham at June 22, 2006 10:33 AMTo my way of thinking,"City Hall Reflected" is a superb example of a most important aspect of photography. All of us who visit "the blogs" regularly must have seen dozens, if not hundreds, of images featuring Toronto City Hall. Many, no doubt, have seen the actual structure.
This is the first time I have really had any reason to think about it; or to have really seen it. The "normal" approach presents this unusual building simply as a venue; a setting for whatever is seen to be happening around it.
Your choice of black and white, isolating the subject from its surroundings, of the angle, of the well planned abstract basis of the image makes a picture of a well known building a different and more important visual experience.
I expect Toronto City Hall has not been seen this way before, except in the mind of the architect before putting it on the drawing board.
I wonder what the architect might have to tell us regarding this particular image of his work. I would really like to know.
I think, personally, that this image is one of those that introduces a whole new way of seeing and of thinking; which may be the ultimate of what "art" can do for us.
Bravo, Sam, well seen and well done; and thanks for sharing.
Having just offered a really long-winded comment on Toronto City Hall, I feel compelled to apologize for the excess.
Perhaps: "Wow, man!" or "that's totally awesome!" should have sufficed :)
Really nice!MashaAllah.
Posted by uzki at June 22, 2006 10:51 AMA very inspired shot!! Love it!
goddamm that is one mega wide angle!!! great reflections :D
Posted by JD at June 22, 2006 11:42 AMThe reflections of the lights in the water are great. Like the squiggly lines they draw in the water.

Posted by A thinker at June 22, 2006 12:15 PMoh my gosh. I just have to comment again. *Everything* is just right about this photo, the placement of City Hall, the arches over the fountain, the reflections, the amount of water in the foreground, just everything. A new personal fave.
Posted by A thinker at June 22, 2006 12:16 PMI love how the lights are turned into swirling lines in the water. If only Nathan Phillips Square looked this good in reality!
Posted by rek at June 22, 2006 12:34 PMHOLY sh!t....I dont comment often, but that is exactly what I said when I saw this pic today...the reflections are amazing.

Posted by shane j montgomery at June 22, 2006 05:52 PMWow... Nice work. Finally an inspired photograph again. The abstract nature of the reflected light on the pool in Nathan Phillip's sq. is an interesting contrast to the "concrete" (figuratively and literaly) city hall buildings in the background.
