Wow, this is GREAT! Perfect exposure (of course, this might also be a combination of two images?). An aside, I always find that city hall building so facinating. Can't really understand what message the architect was going for... Perhaps "here we only look at our selves and never outwards."?

I've made this site my homepage and have had the pleasure of viewing these pics everyday for about 5 months now. I've always been inspired and impressed, but after having seen today's pic I felt obliged to make my first comment. I'm absolutely stunned! Having lived in Toronto for 20 years and having witnessed its beauty and majesty in person, I must say that I've never seen the city captured in a more beautiful fashion. I still visit T.O. frequently, and your site is an amazing reminder why others should do the same. Artists serve the world as their country's best goodwill ambassadors. Keep up the incredible work!

Whenever I have one of your photos as a wallpaper I always get compliments, and people are always asking where the photo is from.

This shot really is amazing. I have a similar view from my window, but it somehow it looks a lot better in this photograph. Toronto really has a distinctive and beautiful skyline.

Iain

Posted by Iain at June 16, 2006 03:41 AM

The flash presentation is cool! It would be really neat if we could use the same flash object and just specify the before and after images in the params. Would be a useful tool for many photoblogs. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Posted by J at June 16, 2006 03:51 AM

Hey Sam,
First let me say, nice flash presentation... i know it's more work, but it's really appreciated. (hint, hint -- more would be cool :)

But i remember those very same clouds, it was late evening and I was biking to work thinking a few things. First was wow... those are amazing clouds, and they reminded me of the kind of clouds that you look for. And then i though, "gee i wonder if Sam is going to take the picture of those", they were truely majastic. I would suggest a good location is on Queen's park/Avenue Road just south of bloor, facing north as a good vantage point for the next shot. :) keep it up!

Great shot. The difference between the original and the Post Proccessed one. Would you be able to list the steps you took to achieve this? Also can you recommend a good Photoshop book for a complete beginner?

Lucas

Posted by Lucas A at June 16, 2006 07:12 AM

Hi Sam,

I love the additions you made to this post, especially the flash before and after shot.

I would also love it if for an image like this you could find a place to post the photoshop file containing all the adjustments you made so that I could see how you get the colours that you do from your images.

Thanks.

That flash of the pre/post processing image is sweet. Was that something "off the shelf" or did you write it custom in flash? I'd love to incorporate something like that in my site. Thanks!

Posted by Chris at June 16, 2006 10:24 AM

Stunning and dynamic - could be a still from a Michael Mann film.

This sort of this thing makes you want to go out and an take pictures- inspirational. Love it.
Thanks.

sam, i think you're amazing. i adore the flash and wish i could do post processing like that. please continue to make my life wonderful, thanks.

Posted by josie at June 16, 2006 11:12 AM

Good photoshop job, no offence, but this just proved my assertion that you should get more credit for your Pshop skills than your photography skills.i would like to see some photos with no post processing to really gauge yor photography skills (although i love your lomo stuff).
The final verdict: you can turn any mediocre photo into a great well-ballanced tonal one.

Posted by andy at June 16, 2006 11:21 AM

man i know quite some flash but this i haven't seen before!! if it doesn't take too long, you should do it for ALL your pictures, it is soooo sweet!!

Posted by web design uk at June 17, 2006 07:32 AM

i really want to come to photography's defense. post processing photographs does NOT reduce the photographer's ability. while its nice to put the achievement of all good photographs on the post processing, in reality, no matter how good your post processing is, if the original was not great, it will not become great.

Posted by olya at June 17, 2006 08:19 AM

Your shot of Toronto is amazing in its detail and exposure. I am a photoshop guy and can't believe how little you did after capturing the raw image to come up with what you have now.

Also, the time lapse shot you did of the reflective building with the Rebel XT is amazing as well.

Very inspirational, I'm going out to shoot tonight.

Posted by jiktelwas at April 23, 2007 01:50 PM

This whole picture is false. It must be a model or something. The CN Tower is west of city hall. City Hall isn't facing south it's facing (what looks like) East. The Scotiabank Tower and BMO Tower are not that far east of City Hall, or the CN Tower for that matter. Also, the Sears, which I'm presuming is the Eaton Centre, runs North-South and is adjacent to City Hall, not north of it. Fake! Any true Torontonian would know.
