Comments: shadows on the wall

That's a long pair of legs! :) But I won't thank you for reminding me about that old Mike Oldfield's song.. 'shadow on the wall'.. now this tune and lyrics are going to haunt me throughout the day!

Don't you wish digital cameras had larger dynamic ranges

Climbing a garbage bin. Now that is commitment to your art.

The light in this is quite erie, cold white at bottom. Strange.

Getting on a garbage can for elevation? Reminds me of Malak Karsh, our famous Canadian scenic and industrial photographer who I was lucky enough to be a bag boy for when I was still 16 in 1948. He carried a ladder everywhere. Many of his famous tulip photos of Ottawa were taken from a ladder. It's especially usefull if you have a long lens (tele) shot to keep a more natural perspective - or what seems more natural.

OK! So a tripod is hard enough to carry on a bike where the hey do we stash the ladder?

scaling garbage cans, eh? Maybe time to break out that tilt/shift lens instead :)

nice shot.

Thank you for this site, Toronto is my home city and I just came back after being overseas. I was feeling a bit lonely and disconnected and your blog is reminding me how cool Toronto really is.

Very nice shot...I passed along this very stretch of road not lon ago.

Posted by D MacIntyre at March 19, 2006 06:24 PM

You didn't even have to mention the location of the shadow to figure out who it belongs to. I'd recognize those legs anywhere.

Nice creativity, Sam.

not a bad idea. however i don't really like the lack of saturation in this image. maybe it's just me that i like either saturated or desaturated.

cool, I really like the shadows and the feel on this pic.

Posted by A thinker at March 20, 2006 09:05 AM

Good pic but I can't help but wonder if this would have been more effective in B&W

Posted by Graham at March 20, 2006 12:06 PM

hahaha garbage bin...

but why did u shoot this pic ? is this a resident building of OCAD students?

Posted by jeez at March 20, 2006 01:11 PM

Awesome shot Sam. Your work is always so interesting and perfectly processed. You give it such a "real life" look. This isn't the first time I've read where you had to climb something just for a better shot. But a trash bin!?! Devotion. I like that. It was worth it for you I'm sure. It was for us.

This would be my girlfriend's complex. Her place is accessed by the gate on the right (not seen in this photo). =)
