selective perception is a funny thing... that little Pepsi sign is actually the first thing i focused on :)

love your pics!

Great capture of lighting... i thought it was a screen shot from PGR3...

Posted by Drew at March 1, 2006 04:35 AM

That's my fave time of the day, with the sun going down. Great soft and toned down colours to this scene creating the atmosphere of calm and peace.. tho obviously it couldn't have been too quiet in such a busy street at the time!

Posted by Susie at March 1, 2006 04:37 AM

Wow! I love the lighting..stunning! The whole image looks luminous..you have captured one of those moments between daylight and street light.

Posted by John Bloor at March 1, 2006 05:29 AM

nice street capture.

Posted by Pooriya at March 1, 2006 06:13 AM

the screen feel common but humanity.
downtown before night.

hi sam,
great shot once again. terrific colors.
one little thing to mention about your page itself: at the bottom it still says "all images copyright ©2005 sam javanrouh", maybe you want to update it to "2006". just to let you know.
i still enjoy your shots every day, it's just great. i am trying to do something similar of stockholm (sweden) where i am now, but it's not really the form of a blog. maybe i'll one day try and make the step!
byebye and good luck in the future!

What strange lighting conditions. Seems like everything has been bathed in brown light!

Posted by Jonathan Goodwin at March 1, 2006 07:33 AM

Great capture of life in our great city!

Posted by D MacIntyre at March 1, 2006 07:58 AM

Amazing! My favorite picture here in a long time.

Posted by Jesse at March 1, 2006 08:18 AM

I'm struck by how we are constantly bomboarded with signage as we walk around in our cities. Really blows my mind. makes me think of what litteracy means today... Great shot Sam, love the brownish tones throughout the day. Hey, let me know if ever you're holding a photoshop seminar!

Posted by Daniel Seguin at March 1, 2006 08:24 AM

awesome shot, among my favorites of yours actually

Posted by Ben at March 1, 2006 08:33 AM

...or... Hard Rock and Sears, Toronto. Perhaps. :-D

Posted by DeWaun at March 1, 2006 08:40 AM

I don't know much about photography but I know how much I miss Toronto. Thanks for the images of my old haunts. What a great raw street level shot.

Posted by Tiina at March 1, 2006 08:47 AM

I really like the Escher-esque effect with the Yonge sign. Bravo!

Posted by todd at March 1, 2006 09:06 AM

Because I'm in the US, this picture looks almost eery because the yellow light is on top. I would love to visit there.

Posted by Scarlet at March 1, 2006 09:07 AM

Ive waiting for a picture like this one, very nice.

Posted by Steve at March 1, 2006 10:11 AM

NICE! I really like the feel and mood of this shot. Just before sunset, I assume. . .this is one of my favourite photos ever posted on this site.

Posted by A thinker at March 1, 2006 10:15 AM

you make me want to visit toronto

Posted by Natalie at March 1, 2006 10:38 AM

Beautiful shot...and brought back some fond memories...thanks

Posted by lisi at March 1, 2006 10:49 AM

I like how you correct the vertical perspective! and this is a very beautiful Photo in both colours and composition manner, this could be a painting piece instead. all thumbs up!

Posted by ila at March 1, 2006 11:02 AM

It's funny how white salt deposits along the side of the road and bits of drab snow hiding in the shadows of lightposts bring back life in T.O. Thanks.

Posted by AllanM at March 1, 2006 11:21 AM

Please don't ever stop your blog. I love city pictures. The best part of the day is checking your new picture. Please never ever ever ever ever stop!

Posted by TheWakeUpCall at March 1, 2006 11:25 AM

Really great shot. I've been there dozens of time but never seen the beauty of the corner before.

Posted by John Packman at March 1, 2006 11:29 AM

It's true that the lighting here makes the photo - but beyond it I can't see that this shot has a lot of merit. From the static-looking cars in focus to the one coming in at the lower-right-hand corner, to the relatively empty upper-left-hand corner, I just don't see the appeal. The lighting is nice, as I said, but I'm sure there was a much more interesting subject nearby that was illuminated in the very same light.

Posted by Andy Cogbill at March 1, 2006 12:21 PM

great perspective, nice timing

Posted by Matthew Greco at March 1, 2006 12:23 PM

You caught this at just the right time of the day. The lighting is perfect and colors are brilliant.

Where is importance ? Lost .. Sth Lost in crowded streets of my City ! ( just my words that come after seeing ur pic ;-) Nice one ! )

Posted by Hoda at March 1, 2006 01:43 PM

My view of the downtown core of the city from my 23rd floor apt. allows me to see right across the lake to the buildings in Niagara Falls!!
Sam definitely caught the light last evening. It is always dramatic, but different, depending on whats in the atmosphere just before the sun disappears.
A bit of Toronto trivia -- ours was the first Hard Rock Cafe in North America!!

Posted by Henry at March 1, 2006 01:51 PM

awesome photo sam. really sharp.

Posted by Victor at March 1, 2006 02:52 PM

the sky's lovely, but if you look at the road and the sidewalk, you have to realize that it's still winter, no matter what the date is

Posted by kikko77 at March 1, 2006 03:25 PM

Great one Sam...what photgraphy should be plain and simple good obsevation coupled with nice composition well exposed...this does it all for me.

Beautiful photo. The color of the cab matches the sundown's! Even all the buildings seem to be new, Young Street gives the same feeling as it did 45 years ago when I shot the photos for my book "The New City". Bravo.

Yonge and dundas is my afvourite interesection in Toronto, it's so live.

Posted by Ayan at March 1, 2006 04:15 PM

i was last year in toronto, i left on may 31. in the afternoon. this was the last place i went before i took the subway to the airport which took me back to switzerland after 8 month in toronto. this picture is really amazing, i like most of the pictures on this site. i like the sky which is coloured, and the light from the sun which is reflecting from some windows. the whole situation that the picture shows is very good. it really shows the life in torontos downtown. when i look at it, i get kind of sad, because i'm here and not there. very good, i like your work.

Posted by Tobias at March 1, 2006 05:53 PM

Was directed here from Toronto Metblogs. This is a great shot as the sunset-light softens what is admittedly a harsh, ugly-looking street (love Toronto, but know it isn't overly pretty). I love the Downtown Yonge signposts - so fun!

Posted by wyn at March 1, 2006 06:01 PM

Yippie. The great city photos are back. There is so much to look at in this photo...very nice

Posted by NoLabels at March 1, 2006 06:06 PM

There's such warm lighting here, though i cant imagine it is at all warm.
The blur on the car going by at the bottom right and the red light really add a lot to it.

As for the pink panther poster, im just not so sure that looks like a great movie.

Posted by Phil at March 1, 2006 06:14 PM

your shots of toronto make me miss home that much more! our city is beautiful and you capture it perfectly. keep the pictures coming!

Posted by CET at March 1, 2006 06:39 PM

thats what i'm talking about, way to go sam. the clarity and lighting on this is perfect. i can't find anything i do not like. the odd colored taxi makes the shot THAT much more interesting, wow wow and wow!

Posted by shane j montgomery at March 2, 2006 01:35 AM

great picture

unfortunately my nemesis, the no left/right turn sign features prominently

oh how i hate the rules that plague that intersection

Posted by A at March 2, 2006 08:04 PM

Seeing this shot makes me want to take a week off work and read my photoshop book until I can do this. The colors are absolutely amazing, not to mention the composition, motion, etc. Excellent shot!

Posted by Abe at March 3, 2006 04:01 AM

i don't know what to say.... it's perfect!!!
