tHey were young.

Interesting. It looks more like a stage than a train station. I like the overall tone of the image as well.

Posted by Ahamed at February 22, 2006 01:57 AM

Really nice one. Never mind about the name of the station - the photo is better this way.

Posted by Igor Gusarov at February 22, 2006 02:13 AM

Looks almost like a frame from a movie about the old couple. What is that red box? It looks out of place sitting there.

Posted by gck at February 22, 2006 02:24 AM

fatoh!

Posted by arash at February 22, 2006 02:27 AM

Cool photo, I love the way that everything seems so out of place.

Posted by woof82 at February 22, 2006 02:49 AM

It's actually called the "Underground", even though most of it is above ground in the suburbs ;)

Posted by YorkshireJumbo at February 22, 2006 03:21 AM

It's on the District and Circle line if that helps.

The snack machine and two persons are standing out against the dark wall in the background. Because there are no other persons on the platform, it produces some kind of feeling of loneliness. Nice shot.

excellent muted colours.

Great shot. So much for the eye here - the couple, the vending machine (?) and the graffiti. Nice.

Posted by seriocomic at February 22, 2006 04:26 AM

Composition is just superb.

Posted by Ashish Sidapara at February 22, 2006 06:28 AM

Nice composition Sam.....I'm sure some Londoner out there will be able to supply you with the name of the station.

Great urban and social image.

Posted by Angel at February 22, 2006 06:36 AM

I love this picture :) It looks almost comical to me - like a grand piano is about to fall down between the couple and the red box. Or that the train will go by so fast that his hat and her wig will go flying off :P

Now this is more like it! I love this picture... I love the stories it tells. The couple; the graffiti; the rail line (especially since you can't see the tracks but instantly recognize it is a rail line). And it's all enhanced by the fact you don't know which station it is, because now I can use my imagination to make up all the stories in this picture. I knew I was still hanging around your site for a reason...

Posted by Robert at February 22, 2006 06:53 AM

That poor lovely couple have no idea they're about to be eaten by a giant red box.
It's so sad...

Posted by Rin at February 22, 2006 08:07 AM

You totally captured the essence of an old London couple. Love it.

Posted by RyanT at February 22, 2006 11:08 AM

This is very cool looking. It looks like a street with a bench and a snack machine in the middle.

Posted by Nate at February 22, 2006 11:13 AM

Beautiful composition!

Posted by tetsu at February 22, 2006 11:49 AM

More decrepit ugliness for people to wait in.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at February 22, 2006 11:50 AM

This picture is so lovely and wistful, with the charming couple framed by the gritty edges of the subway platform and the urban graffiti, with the red vending machine adding just a hint of the surreal. It reminds me of the same juxtaposition of the serene, the harsh and the somewhat other-worldly in the scenes of the elderly gentleman sitting on a bench at the defunct bus stop in the movie "Ghost World."

A very nice crisp shot indeed.

From the map here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/colourmap.gif and the fact that I would guess you were enroute back to Heathrow from your Oxford stay, I'd guess it was somewhere like Stamford Brook, Turnham Green or Ravenscourt Park down in the SouthWest corner....

They look like such a nice couple. I was so focused on them that I did not notice the snack machine until I read a comment mentioning it. By the way, I especially enjoy your photos featuring snow. Thank you very much.

Posted by Paladin at February 22, 2006 02:02 PM

It's funny how the vending machine is in the middle of no where!

Posted by prasoon at February 22, 2006 05:19 PM

looks like the Picadilly Line

Posted by john wood at February 22, 2006 06:34 PM

Very cool space in this frame

Great shot, Sam. Those vertical metal devices ... are they security cameras? If they are, this shot is a commentary on the overkill security obsession of modern life. Here's this sweet older couple, apparently alone in the underground station, minding their own business and enjoying a little snuggle, while the cameras watch their every move. (But they seem to watching the watching cameras, too.) Then there's the imposing monolithic red vending machine, which certainly appears capable of mischief, also trained in their direction. I hope when they get home they'll enjoy a nice cuppa by the fire, with no devices intruding on a cozy end to their day.

Scene I:
Old Pops: Muffin...I think the Red Box wants your sandwich
Old Ma': Too slow, by the time it gets here i'll be done...Good thing i got new dentures...

Well done again...Great Shot/ Nice framing/ Nice tone/ Nice Colors
Cheers

The vertical thingies are stop lights ie it's a terminal station - maybe Richmond ??

Posted by Tim at February 23, 2006 04:51 AM

I really like how it accentuates the horizontal- its cool composition and emphasizes the emotion of the photo. very nice.

i love this picture. i've been checking ddi daily for at least 2 years now, i've seen every picture and looked through every archive. i absolutely adore your work and would love to take a roadtrip from philadelphia to toronto to see one of the exhibits you're in, In Transit seems absolutely amazing. i started my own photoblog about three days ago (i know, a little late--hehe) after finally figuring out a way to get hosting and such. you are such an inspiration and i truly appreciate you for being a dedicated photoblogger. keep up the fantastic work!!

Great red color, that box! It looks certainly menacing. Shot just seconds before the attack.

After much debate on the uk.tranport.london newsgroup we have come to the conclusion that this is the Wimbledon terminus of the District line, about 8 miles from central London - the famous lawn tennis grounds are further back up the line towards London - in a more salubrious part of Wimbledon!

A beautifully atmospheric photo - although in daily life, Wimbledon is usually a much more busy terminus than this!

Posted by Paul Terry at February 24, 2006 03:21 AM

Very nice shot. Ideal for a desktop to keep reminding you to slow down a little.

You have THE eye!

Posted by Ludovic at February 27, 2006 08:35 AM

This is definitely Wimbledon. I go through it every day.

I'm 99% sure this is in Richmond. I'll check it tonight when I go home, and if it is, I'll send you my own version as proof!

Posted by Dabro at June 2, 2006 11:20 AM

I take it all back. Upon further reflection I don't think it's Richmond after all. I'll keep an eye out regardless.
