An extremely cold image... brrr. Let the spring come very soon.
Posted by Susie at February 20, 2006 05:02 AMfantastic. i especially like the contrast between the surrounding grey and the colour core if you like.
Posted by arash at February 20, 2006 05:10 AMThis one is just superb.
Posted by Ashish Sidapara at February 20, 2006 05:14 AMMagnifique, j'adore...
Posted by Jim at February 20, 2006 07:05 AMCool - no pun intended.
And good to see the old 300d and kit lens still get a work out from time to time.
BTW, those clouds are an excellent match for the ice. Come to think of it they are a perfect match for the winter olympics on my TV right now too.
Posted by ROB at February 20, 2006 07:07 AMOh my god, this is amazing! What a scene. You dod a great job with the mood and colors! The sky is just perfect.
Posted by Kenny at February 20, 2006 07:08 AMsam, this capture looks surreal -- as if the world as about to freeze over and toronto was about to slide into an icy slumber. whether it's an old shot or not, it is still quite fascinating.
Posted by vasta at February 20, 2006 07:32 AMIt's a great shot, at an enviable wide angle as always, but it's also an interesting case study for jpeg compression artifacts. The windows in a lot of the skyline buildings look blocky in a way that, having seen your previous work, I am certain is not reflected in the original shot. I don't know if I have a point, just an interesting photo from a technical perspective, especially given how clear and un-blocky the rest of the shot is.
Posted by Johnath at February 20, 2006 08:40 AMBeautiful colours. A very serene and 'frozen' scene, almost ghosttown-like. Only the steam billowing out toward the center says "people live here."
Posted by emma at February 20, 2006 10:09 AMThe only thing different in this picture from how this shot would actually look now is the number of condos (great pylons of the sky) that are blocking the view!! Brilliant shot. Let's see how it looks a year from now.
Posted by mark at February 20, 2006 10:22 AMYes, this is a very nicely balanced shot, and well composed.
I too like the contrast and the sharpness.
For what I can tell, Toronto is a very photogenic city. I live in Arizona (USA), so I have a completely different environment to shoot at, but nevertheless I can sometimes see the way we (photobloggers) look at things can many times be very similar.
Cool shot... chilling ;o)
This is an amazing shot. I love those puff of white clouds on top of the building on right.
Posted by noushin at February 20, 2006 11:16 AMReally nice Sam
i love how colour the image looks
a lone explorer comes across a city grown out of the tundra.. well defined at the edges on a perfectly flat sheet of ice.
what the hell is it doing there?! ;)
just wonderful. any chance of getting this photo as a wallpaper?
Posted by peter at February 20, 2006 12:44 PMThe city almost doesn't look real. Looks like a minature model or that it was super-imposed into the picture. I love the Toronto skyline even in the dead of winter.
Posted by Duarte at February 20, 2006 12:44 PMI like this shot, if only because it's different than your (general your) average skyline. I like having skyline series. Mine of Nashville doesn't have an icy lake, but I've got Sunny Skyline, Stormy Skyline, Winter Skyline, etc...This is a good addition to your collection :)
Posted by Mandie at February 20, 2006 01:18 PMGreat shot. I like the dark clouds above the city. Makes it ominous...
Posted by Niek at February 20, 2006 01:20 PMAn amazing photo. The sky looks like it's painted on.
Posted by Chris at February 20, 2006 02:16 PMvery cold indeed. I second the motion that spring can make it's way here anytime!
Posted by shadowfind at February 20, 2006 02:37 PMBeautiful colours!
Posted by Wolfgang at February 20, 2006 02:41 PMPerfect!! this is the kind of pictures i love, i think Toronto is a great city, so pictures like this one magnifyes that... take more pics like this Sam!! score!!
Posted by eli itzhak at February 20, 2006 03:20 PMStunning shot...one of the best Toronto cityscape I've seen!!!
Posted by D MacIntyre at February 20, 2006 03:49 PMgreat skyline. love the colors.
Posted by Victor at February 20, 2006 04:23 PMthis is a very good shot. I like pinkish and greenish tones in the picture.
Posted by cozello at February 20, 2006 04:53 PMVery beautiful. Amazing how you can get everything in one shot.. the frozen lake, the skyline, the clouds, even the smoke coming out of the buildings. Your photograhpy is extraordinary.
Posted by Peter (AsianWildRose) at February 20, 2006 05:01 PMThis is a very cool photo, it actually reminds me of that Hollywood film "Day After Tomorrow".
Posted by Paul Woolrich at February 20, 2006 05:50 PMmagical
i really like this one
sharp and highly saturated city looks good here
Are those your footprints on the ice?
You couldn't do that this year.
Awesome image.. this is the first time that I'm seeing Toronto like THIS.. WOW
Posted by Rahul Kumar at February 20, 2006 09:24 PMvery nice perspective and frame.
Posted by Matthew Greco at February 20, 2006 09:25 PMAwesome skyline, looks like an advertise!
Posted by Ayan at February 20, 2006 10:14 PMThis makes centre island look so far away! Nevertheless, an amasing cityscape. Toronto is pretty damn picturesque.
Posted by darren at February 20, 2006 10:57 PMWow, I just stumbled onto this site about a month ago after an article was posted in my school's paper about photo blog sites.....I have to say a lot of the pictures here are amazing, but this one is especially phenomenal.
Posted by watson and holmes at February 21, 2006 12:04 AMfeel silence.

Posted by dollar[CHN] at February 21, 2006 12:54 AMSuperb! Like the scene in "The day after tomorrow"!
Posted by ih at February 21, 2006 02:54 AMWow! How i wish waters in Singapore would freeze up some time of the year too.
Posted by PlasticTV at February 21, 2006 04:50 AMAnother great picture. This is one of those pics that captures the mood of the season nicely. I don't suppose there would be any chance of a wallpaper of this?
Posted by Graham at February 21, 2006 11:17 AMThis looks like the poster for Mad Max IV: Frozen Toronto. I like that it feels expansive.
Posted by Tuffer at February 21, 2006 12:41 PMThis ice scene was part of my life when I worked in the Parks Department at the Island. We kept the Ongiara running as long as it would keep pushing through the ice, either to Ward's Island or if we couldn't get in there, we'd go to Hanlan's Point. If there are too many days in a row of very cold weather, the Ongiara cannot get through the ice anymore so we run the buses across the airport runways and take the ferry at the foot of Bathurst St. What a way to make a living - but I certainly remember it fondly. Sometimes I brought my skates to work, got off the ferry and skated into the office. Cool, thanks for posting images from my favourite place on earth.
Posted by Natasha at February 21, 2006 10:14 PMI think you posted a similar picture a long time ago. You posted a frozen lake before though. I know that much. This is really nice right here though. All the colors came out real nice in the middle of the sky and the frozen lake. I hear that is a nice island too.
Posted by Nate at February 22, 2006 11:20 AMWhat a view. What a city. In a way its also quite a sad image. All the grey, from the (frozen?) river, dark clouds, and smoke just off-centre, make it look quite sad. This is what we (man) have created... Yet I love cities so I love the photograph!
Posted by Phil at February 22, 2006 02:47 PMSimply amazing
