Comments: citytv, old man and the dog

Wow. With a shot like this it's really apparent how dirty and decrepit Toronto has become...

(sigh)

That being said, fantastic shot, Sam! Really brilliant.

Posted by James at February 17, 2006 02:33 AM

this is a rich, rich image. love it.

Posted by Jesse at February 17, 2006 02:36 AM

Interesting photo. I like how there seems to be a sense of peace despite the rough and gloomy environment.

Posted by Ahamed at February 17, 2006 02:51 AM

way to go on this one sam, i'm sure i'm not the first to comment, but everything about this shot is working.

Posted by shane j montgomery at February 17, 2006 02:56 AM

sigh.
pulled on alot of sad emotions with this one.
toronto has got to work on the poverty problem.

beautiful shot nonetheless.

Posted by Julia at February 17, 2006 03:13 AM

great!!

guy looks like some low-profile zen guru sitting on top of a mountain waiting for people to come up to him and ask abt the meaning of life

Posted by sami jan at February 17, 2006 03:21 AM

It is a pitty that some people must live this way. On the other side, this is a good shot that emphasizes this. Thanks!

Posted by Niek at February 17, 2006 04:31 AM

Had to look to realise while the title started "city tv". That is a hard life, makes you wonder why he has never made his way more south!

Posted by ROB at February 17, 2006 04:36 AM

One wonders how he got up there. Great shot - I like all that is going on in this foto. I haven't been able to browse the net much the last week - I'm in withdrawls from your site, Sam!

Posted by Abe at February 17, 2006 05:04 AM

I like this shot!especially the colors, and the way the dog looks!

Posted by Gelareh at February 17, 2006 05:09 AM

Very nice candid shot

Posted by Navin Harish at February 17, 2006 06:17 AM

There's a lot going on here but it works. His black coat really makes him stand out against the business. The composition is solid.

Posted by Chris at February 17, 2006 06:31 AM

Which one is queen? ;o)

Posted by EasyRew at February 17, 2006 07:24 AM

I hope you gave that guy some cash so he can get food for his dog!

Posted by serp at February 17, 2006 07:54 AM

Too many subjects at the same time. The title is already exhausting: “CityTV, old man and the dog”. I don’t really know where to look at. I find myself oscillating: I come to the man, but since confused with the complex background and no visual contact established, I jump to the red frames (including the windows’ pattern in the background). And since I don’t feel comfortable with this scattered subject, then back to the man. And so on. In this picture, composition, which is your strongest point, is not as good as it uses to be. However, atmosphere and light is very realistic; I really feel in.
Thank you for “daily dose”; go ahead.

Posted by diwis at February 17, 2006 08:37 AM

I usually ignore the bums in T.O. but this guy just looks so sad. And the dog too. :(

Posted by Dawn at February 17, 2006 08:50 AM

Interesting shot. Hehe! Love the dog.

Posted by Maran at February 17, 2006 08:55 AM

Powerful picture. If I were more cynical, I might suggest you give this one a title like "Modern Civilization"

Posted by John Wunderlich at February 17, 2006 08:58 AM

What was that old thing about people resembling their pets?

Posted by Sean Galbraith at February 17, 2006 09:23 AM

funny and sad. nice capture

Posted by Moussa at February 17, 2006 10:00 AM

how did that bum get such a fancy do?

Posted by teephotography at February 17, 2006 10:17 AM

Great shot. Very evocative. Poor old man. . .and what a darling dog.

Posted by A thinker at February 17, 2006 10:19 AM

Fantastic shot!

Supposedly this guy has been around for ages and durring the X-mas season, even wears a santa hat.

Posted by Barranger at February 17, 2006 11:21 AM

I must insist I don´t like the skew at the top, it makes the image look weird... because the buildings look straight and the newspaper booth look crooked... Aside from that it is gorgeous

Posted by Paolo at February 17, 2006 11:22 AM

Amazing capture. This one has real character and grit to it. Well done!

Posted by D MacIntyre at February 17, 2006 12:31 PM

I thought certainly someone would comment on the text appearing on the pole: "24 Hr" - the amount of time this man probably spends on the street; "POP" - he may be someone's father or at least he may have been called Pop once upon a time. I also like the movement away from the pole by the trolley and the absolutely locked-in-place (space) appearance of the man. All of his movement may be engendered by the need of the dog to get in out of the snow or to find a space to relieve itself. Powerful, telling composition; a story one could read in every city in the world.

Queen & John downtown Toronto.......Old man/dog
Love it! The shot makes my imagination go wild, thinking what will the old man do for the rest of the day......lucky he has a friend the dog......I love all the background and interesting things contained in the photo. A free and interesting trip to Toronto. Great shot!!!

Posted by Barbara at February 17, 2006 01:12 PM

Diwis said: "Too many subjects at the same time." But, in fact, there is one big clear subject. But when one doesn't want to see the real thing...
Great shot, indeed.

Posted by Jonas Detarsis at February 17, 2006 01:22 PM

beautiful really..... i love the grunge and then peace... it reminds me of home

Posted by jeny at February 17, 2006 01:43 PM

I like how the old man is a monochromatic point of stillness amidst all the colour and movement around him. Also interesting is the obscured headline in the Toronto Star box, which looks like "Love Stories" to me. Your insightful eye never fails to amaze, Sam.

Posted by Vicki at February 17, 2006 02:06 PM

Everyone look carefully at the sidewalk. There should be (and I think there are) pink hearts painted randomly on the cement. People from the website, www.newmindspace.com gathered early Valentines day to paint pink hearts all over Queen street. Maybe Sam can get more shots of this 2.1 km sidewalk mural before it gets washed away.

Posted by Robert at February 17, 2006 02:28 PM

beautiful. i love how you captured the scene--the man with his eyes averted, but the dog looking the camera; the rough texture created by the ripped paper

Posted by Serena at February 17, 2006 02:58 PM

Wonderful piece of street photography!

Posted by Micki in Virginia at February 17, 2006 03:28 PM

Yes, I saw homeless in Toronto last July.

Posted by elizabeth at February 17, 2006 03:35 PM

I really like how among all that color, the subject still pops out. nice job.

Posted by Tuffer at February 17, 2006 04:11 PM

he looks very zen.

Posted by Victor at February 17, 2006 04:30 PM

Killer image, Sam. It is busy, but: You've got the elegance of an old building, the elegance of an old homeless man & his dog, and a smattering of the decrepitness that postering & news boxes has given us.

I'm dead curious as to what that cube falling from the man's glove into his sack could be. He looks at it like a treasure.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at February 17, 2006 05:02 PM

My first thought was: "How did that guy get up there?" Then I look more carefully; those boots look brand new! The tread isn't worn at all... better than mine. And his jeans, newer than mine too, no worn spots on the knees from kneeling down. His gloves look pretty good too, and that coat look pretty clean for a 'homeless' guy. And TWO hats? Now the dog is another story! Throw him a bone!
But Sam, it sure is a good photo!

Posted by Jim at February 17, 2006 05:06 PM

You should set up a torrent file for the movie download...

Hi, I'd like to comment on a few of the previous comments. That man is not a "bum"; I've met him, he is always very nice and polite. I don't know what the dog went though before he got it, but I'm sure that he is not suffering at all now. In the two years that I have seen this man at Queen and John, I have observed that he really cares about his dog.

Posted by Eral at February 18, 2006 10:24 AM

Interesting composition. I like it!

Posted by Raffi at February 18, 2006 11:31 AM

Can someone please seed the torrent? The tracker seems to be down. There are at least 4 peers on the Azureus network that have nothing from the file. Either a new seed or a direct upload to a site like YouSendIt would be nice. Thanks!

Posted by Raffi at February 18, 2006 11:40 AM

Hi Sam. I would like to see the clip from yesterday's Call for Help but torrent doesn't seem to do the job (stuck @ 0.0%). Any URL where we could get the file? Thank you, and great shot again, keep it up! ;)

There are so many details in this photo, giving the photo a very rich quality. The effect is striking, especially the main subject. Excellent work.
