Comments: man, birds and plane

I really like this photo. I like how the jet in the sky ties in a flying theme with the birds in the statue.

Always fresh. Congratulations on a well-deserved award. I think that decades from now we will tell our grandchildren about the days of ddoi. Any word on your parody site, top right pixel/daily dose of generic photos? That was funny while it lasted.

Hello, I'm a long-time looker, first-time commentor. I really like what you do here. This site really has inspired me to start getting some of my photography into the attention of the masses, as well as given me an outlet for a growing passion in Multimedia publication. So, thank you for the inspiration and "bravo," on an extremely entertaining broadcast.

...oh, and great inage... like most other days.

Higher and higher. Nice shot!

I've found it difficult to do shots of sculpture because it's alway derivative of someone else's art.

What you've done here set this apart as art in its own right. Bravo!

Congratulations for the bloggies mister Wvs. And I hope your TV interview went well too. By the way in my other comment I meant to say ‘I wish I could see it’ and not I ‘wish I could it’ ‘,:-\ I think I got a bit too excited about your news.

Very strong composition! The sidelight on the building makes it look majestic. And of course, the aircraft elevated the picture to an even higher plane, no pun intended.

Posted by PlasticTV at January 24, 2006 06:51 AM

good job

Posted by pooyan at January 24, 2006 07:32 AM

Interesting photo Sam! I originally thought that plane was a bird in the sky!

Posted by Chris [57 Degrees] at January 24, 2006 08:08 AM

This would be a fabulous shot even without the tiny jet flying through. But, your genius and magic is the jet showing up just when you are about to shoot. Beauty!

Posted by AllanO' at January 24, 2006 08:45 AM

Fabulous composition. Sam, you seem to always be and the right place at the right time! ;) Oh, and you've got my vote this year too!

I am constantly surprised and impressed by your skills as an artist! How can I purchase one of your prints? You deserve multiple awards not only for your talent but also for your generosity in sharing this beauty with the world. Thank you!

congratulations on you nomination! you deserved it!

anyway, i like the composition of this one. i wonder when would i have the same eye as you!

Posted by eclipse-space at January 24, 2006 09:13 AM

Exquisite... that's all I can say about this one.

I love the sheer blackness of the statute against the clouds and lone plane above, and the contrast between the monument's flowing lines and the crispness of the skyscraper. Brilliant stuff Sam, you've really outdone yourself this time.

Posted by Sina at January 24, 2006 09:28 AM

I voted :). I really wanted ddoi to get a nomination for Best photography weblog, but it's ok.

A beautiful allegory!

Posted by Jonas Detarsis at January 24, 2006 11:03 AM

the colour and angles of the building are very interesting to look at. looks like an abstract shape from an autechre video or something instead of an actual structure.

this is my favourite one in a while. great work sam!

As ever, that eye of yours is on top of natures giving you a special moment.

So I wonder how long you had between hearing/seeing the jet and framing the photo. It couldn't be better arranged.

Grrr! My Jealousy level is up again.

It's a man. It's some birds. It's a plane. It's ... Sam the Man.
It's been well over a year of visits and I never have been disappointed. Such generosity with talent is appreciated. Please keep it up. It makes my day much better to come here.

Posted by Ed Maisch at January 24, 2006 12:28 PM

I just love this one. Notice how the statue and the building are both angled towards the plane. And the contrast of light and dark, curved and angular, natural and man-made...truly inspired!

Beautiful...

Posted by jsolk at January 24, 2006 03:11 PM

Hi there – this is a stunning image. You timed the shot to perfection if the plane had been anywhere else it would have had me reaching for the clone tool – all the best jon

Posted by Jon at January 24, 2006 03:40 PM

Fantastic. It's amazing how the subjects are linked thematically: man's need to climb the skies and fly, etc.

Posted by Soloman at January 24, 2006 03:54 PM

Jaw dropping!

Noticed you haven't updated your flickr in a while..!

Posted by Hitesh Sawlani (hitkaiser) at January 24, 2006 05:34 PM

You cloned in that plane, right?

Come on, admit it! It's too perfect.

[Just joshing. Great shot.]

Beautiful and interesting! Glad I stopped by! :-)

Posted by *jeanne* at January 24, 2006 06:01 PM

Wow. This is wonderful. The building almost looks like an ink drawing.

Congratulations on the nomination too. Well deserved.

Posted by Jamie at January 24, 2006 06:38 PM

Wow, that airplane looks like a fly compare to the building.

Posted by noushin at January 24, 2006 07:11 PM

Simply love the perspective of this photo. I would think a philosopher took such a picture, the way everything looked so still in it.

Posted by Peggy at January 24, 2006 07:59 PM

good shot, sir.

Posted by bryce at January 24, 2006 08:47 PM

awesome picture sam.

you should check out some of the pictures i've taken, they're mostly all ottawa based.

we should collaborate on throwing enough images together for a toronto/ottawa book!

get back to me if this peaks any interest.

The colors, the contrasts, the composition. This is one of those photos that belongs in a category all its own. The building looks like it's covered in a mighty Scottish tartan. What a delight Sam. Long may you be inspired. We benefit from your view of the world.

Posted by Francine at January 25, 2006 12:25 PM

This is a wonderful perspective. Great contrast and colors - excellent! Congratulations on being nominated the best - you certainly deserve it, Sam.

Posted by Abe at January 26, 2006 02:39 AM

Cadrage parfait, l'avion semble projeté par l'immeuble et la statue prend vie... Very good picture, I love the composition.
