Comments: afternoon shadows

such a familiar sight.. i practically live on the spadina streetcar. it WAS pretty nippy earlier today, wasn't it?

Posted by allison at January 26, 2006 01:30 AM

So many good things here... motion, a bit of chaos, wonderful sky, the strong tower in the background, the shadows, contrast, and rich, vibrant colors. This is fantastic!

Woah, check out that light! Very nice.

Now thats colours I dont get with my Sony Cybershot! Toronto looks nice, maybe I should go there sometime...

Some might think the polarizer effect is a little overdone but i like the way it increases contrast and add a graphic touch to the picture. Unless i'm wrong and that darkness is the result of burning. :)

Posted by PlasticTV at January 26, 2006 05:26 AM

great light!... seems cold!

Posted by fred at January 26, 2006 06:56 AM

maybe im just confused... but how is there sop much light on the side of that bus and the car behind it if all the other shadows are pointing the other way? are the shadows close to the camera just due to a reflection on that building?

Posted by grant at January 26, 2006 07:10 AM

I know this spot well. A nicely balanced crisp, clean picture and a good example of the bustling activity around this area. Nice shot!

Posted by D MacIntyre at January 26, 2006 07:46 AM

Love the light dappling on the roadway. What's the story with the car in the nearest lane trying to cut over in front of the other though.

Toronto drivers... bah!

Posted by dan culberson at January 26, 2006 08:29 AM

great street shot.
nice sharpness. I like the color of sky and composition.

Ahhhh...two of my favourite parts of Toronto..streetcars..and the CN Tower. *puts it as my wallpaper* great shot. :D

Posted by LaurenM at January 26, 2006 08:48 AM

I like all the shadowing in this picture. Looks nice ;)

Posted by Rob at January 26, 2006 09:01 AM

very scrumptious warmth!!!

Posted by Hamed at January 26, 2006 09:03 AM

Wow, the shadows really had me confused for a minute. It took me a minute to realize the person running with the bag and the black car have shadows because of the glass building in the rear. Eerie!

Posted by eliot at January 26, 2006 09:51 AM

Nice shot.

Post processing on this one would be excellent to see. :)

Posted by Chris at January 26, 2006 10:00 AM

you always bring a new and refreshing angle to familiar sights!

Posted by grace at January 26, 2006 10:22 AM

The lighting in this photo is fantastic. You can tell the sun is on the right of the shot. But, the glass building on the left is bouncing light back to the right into a shadow of another building. It's slightly confusing to the eye and makes one study the photo.

It's also a great shot of city life.

Posted by Isaac at January 26, 2006 10:37 AM

Very sharp shot!

looks like there's so much more snow up here in Ottawa

Posted by Ruhh at January 26, 2006 10:38 AM

Don't you just love that low winter sun? Great photo lots to occupy the eye.
Cheers

wat an amazing shot here.. wonderful lightin and shadows adds depth to the shot, and wat amazing sharpness... ;p

Posted by jxiong at January 26, 2006 10:59 AM

Note the reverse shadow, with the light reflecting off the building,
creating a "early morning" shadow on the Honda
in the middle of the street.

Posted by R Sutherland at January 26, 2006 11:47 AM

Funny how all the cars visible in the pics are Hondas.

Posted by Ollie at January 26, 2006 12:11 PM

Love the shadows. The lady crossing the street on the left with the shadow on the road just sells teh whole picture for me. Very nice.

Posted by Greg at January 26, 2006 12:33 PM

its a crime that you did not make the list for best photoblog in the contest. this is a good shot.

Posted by jesse at January 26, 2006 01:30 PM

As others note, the reflected sun makes for a spooky shot.

I'm puzzled by the two red posts with the ref frilly stuff hung around. It's not clear enough for me to figure out. The posts look like they're traffic lights with something hung around them????

Good shot! I haven't been there in 21 years.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at January 26, 2006 02:44 PM

whew some awesome reds

Posted by Gary at January 26, 2006 04:06 PM

A great picture. The red streetcar, the red sculpture and the red taillights. The lighting is very nice, especially the long shadows. The very dark sky. This is one of the best ones you made lately.

Posted by Henk Bakker at January 26, 2006 07:28 PM

i love the movement and action in tis shot. well done!

Posted by Matt Greco at January 26, 2006 08:13 PM

Perfect exposure - love the long shadows going in both directions with the reflected sun.

Posted by James Koole at January 26, 2006 08:49 PM

Just coincidental, but EVERY SINGLE vehicle, including one in the background, at left, is a Honda. The shadows are insane, too. I didn't think it was a very interesting photo at first, but after a good look, there are many intersting little things about it.

Posted by Ben Kennedy at January 26, 2006 10:17 PM

Excellent tonal range.

Re: "...the two red posts with the ref frilly stuff hung around..."

Keep in mind this is the heart of Toronto's Chinatown. The 'posts' are a up-dated version of the traditional Chinese city gate, with huge _red dragons_ writhing downwards from each top!

Wonderful shot, Sam! The lighting is crisp and quite surreal -- truly arresting to the eye!!

Posted by BethInCanada at January 26, 2006 10:34 PM

so vivid it makes it surreal.

Posted by rosh at January 27, 2006 12:43 AM

I am utterly amazed at the way you have handled the extreme range of contrast in this picture. The light is fantastic.

Posted by peter at January 27, 2006 04:21 AM

Great scene! Love the PP you've done to get all those great colours popping the way they do. I'd love to read a "winter scene" tutorial of yours some day...

Posted by Dan :: genestho.ca at January 27, 2006 09:50 AM

Chinatown looks so much nicer here.

Posted by Gloria at January 27, 2006 06:15 PM
