Comments: streaking streetcar

Wonderful composition, lovely lighting, nice reflected light on the overhead wires and beauteous streak of a streetcar! I can hear it go by. Great photograph, Sam! Thanks so much for sharing it.

gorgeous

Posted by elina at January 20, 2006 01:24 AM

I like it! Very Back to the Future.

Posted by tj at January 20, 2006 01:27 AM

Can't help it.

The first thing that popped into my brain when I saw this was the Knight Bus in Harry Potter! The way it flies by and muggles aren't supposed to see it.

Forgive me I couldn't resist..

Otherwise I love it. Really nicely done.

Posted by Thea at January 20, 2006 01:35 AM

Excellent shot. And I think you mean King & Spadina. ;)

Posted by Fen at January 20, 2006 01:49 AM

Well done. Can't see a definite image of the rocket, but enough to know the rocket is there, and in motion! How many tries before you nailed the timing, and exposure setting?

Posted by gck at January 20, 2006 01:53 AM

I think we can agree that streaking photos are always welcome. Well done.

Posted by RyanK at January 20, 2006 01:58 AM

very beautiful night shot.
beautiful color of lights and great composition.

Posted by Pooriya at January 20, 2006 02:04 AM

Did you enhance the colour in those wires...wow! Awsome colours.

Posted by ROB at January 20, 2006 03:08 AM

Absolutely stunning Sam. I don't know how you pull off shots as good as these time and time again.

I particularly like how you can see the red and green traffic lights on at the same time because of the 3 second exposure.

I work at a camera store and often use your website to show customers just how good digital photography can be. Well done and keep up the great work!

Posted by Sina at January 20, 2006 03:14 AM

WOW! I absolutely love this 1! :)

Posted by Kiana at January 20, 2006 03:17 AM

there is an error in yer caption. there is no such thing as king and richmond. these two streets run parallel to one another! they never meet!

Posted by map man at January 20, 2006 03:59 AM

another great shot!

Posted by gabor at January 20, 2006 04:28 AM

Wonderful, just love the colours and the shades !

Posted by Kris at January 20, 2006 05:55 AM

Sam, I love this shot!
Thanks again. Are you hitting the newmindspace streetcar party on the weekend?

Posted by Chris Nolan.ca at January 20, 2006 06:17 AM

Boring... anybody could have shot this. Oh, and King and Richmond don't cross.

Posted by Jonesy at January 20, 2006 07:29 AM

Looks more like King and Spadina.

Posted by anonymous at January 20, 2006 07:53 AM

no wonder they call it the Red Rocket...

Posted by alice at January 20, 2006 08:18 AM

nicely executed.

i've always love night shots like this!

Posted by eclipse-space at January 20, 2006 08:20 AM

It is like a rainbow ghost on the go.

Posted by Kim at January 20, 2006 08:44 AM

Spectacular! One of the better night shots I've seen you post - wonderful colours and composition. The street car is in perfect blur - the effect being excellent. Wow on this one Sam!

King and Richmond? More like King and Spadina. Great shot.

Posted by Franca at January 20, 2006 09:05 AM

COOOOOOLLLLL. . .

Posted by A thinker at January 20, 2006 09:19 AM

A great shot! The blurred street car is stunning contrast to the crispness and colour of the still images. Love this one!

Posted by D MacIntyre at January 20, 2006 09:32 AM

Such a great tonal range. Beautifully executed and the composition is perfect. This is tomorrow's photo of the day in The Invisible Man! : )

Posted by nuno f at January 20, 2006 09:56 AM

fantastic motion shot

Posted by Gary at January 20, 2006 10:08 AM

Pretty neat pictures you've got here! I've always thought downtown Toronto was a bit dull, but sure have given life to it through these pics!

Posted by josh chan at January 20, 2006 10:37 AM

incredible Sam. Good luck in "In Transit" to you an d all the artitst ;)

Posted by davidff at January 20, 2006 10:46 AM

Posted by Scott Murdoch at January 20, 2006 10:50 AM

Was a pleasure to chat with you last night at the In Transit opening. This shot would have been a perfect addition to that show. Love the motion blur.

Posted by Jonah at January 20, 2006 11:03 AM

The word "streaking" has taken on new meaning in latter years. A Naked streetcar sounds intriguing, but one full of naked people even more so, if quite unlikely in Toronto the good.

There have been some startling photos of street scenes of thousands of people stark naked when Enron went for broke. Baffles me how they do it.

Not likely in Toronto.

The effect here is interesting - a step beyond car light streaks.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at January 20, 2006 11:24 AM

Are you sure thats King and Richmond? That looks to me like Calphalon on King at Spadina... Wonderful image though! I love your night stuff!

Posted by Stuart Murray at January 20, 2006 11:33 AM

I like the fact that the streaked colors aren't harsh, but softened. Great lighting on the building. And the wires (?) above that pull the street cars look great, too. Cool scene!

Posted by Abe at January 20, 2006 11:40 AM

This is one of my fav shots sam. way to fucking go!

Posted by tee at January 20, 2006 11:42 AM

You're awesome at what you do :)
Just got an email from Hart House Camera Club about your upcoming lecture. Looking foward to it!

Posted by Susana at January 20, 2006 12:17 PM

Contrast! Great effect! I miss Toronto!

Posted by elizabeth at January 20, 2006 12:27 PM

Hi Sam,

Wonderful shot. The streetcar never looked so cool! Love the motion of the ttc with the waiting cars - some inside humour for me with that.

this is King & Spadina no? the streetcar travelling on King through Spadina/King intersection.

cheers
anne

Posted by anne at January 20, 2006 01:33 PM

That's gorgeous. Well done.

Posted by madhava at January 20, 2006 01:48 PM

Nicely done. This reminds me of a CityTV ad.

Posted by Chris at January 20, 2006 01:57 PM

I love this shot, looks like a ghost car is passing through.

Posted by Leanda Ryan at January 20, 2006 02:00 PM

Where's the streetcar? :^D

Posted by Kevin at January 20, 2006 02:06 PM

Love it. I'm a sucker for light streaks though.

Posted by Jeff Ambrose at January 20, 2006 02:09 PM

Do Richmond and King meet? Otherwise nice shot?

Posted by Simon Cain at January 20, 2006 02:13 PM

very appropriate picture for the morning after the in transit show! :)

Posted by istoica at January 20, 2006 02:45 PM

Great shot man, X-Wing passing by, or a streetcar?

Posted by Shaahin at January 20, 2006 03:31 PM

i love motion shots. great work.

Posted by hilary at January 20, 2006 03:54 PM

i like how you use motion in a photo, it seems to give the photo life.

Posted by Matt at January 20, 2006 04:14 PM

yeah! just yeah!

Posted by axl at January 20, 2006 04:23 PM

Posted by Sudi at January 20, 2006 05:15 PM

woah...another wallpaper-prone pic!! :)
YEEHAW!

Posted by Peggy at January 20, 2006 05:29 PM

Nice streaking ephemeral ghost-car. Non-natives would never guess what heavy monsters they are: their concrete pads are constantly in need of repair as they are pounded to pieces by the vibration!
Is this King and Spadina? Looking SW? King and Richmond don't meet.

Posted by Michael Solomon at January 20, 2006 05:44 PM

I love the blur of the lights! It's very colourful!

But don't King and Richmond run parallel? :S

Posted by Lauren at January 20, 2006 06:08 PM

beautiful :) - simply perfect.. still with motion

Posted by eyedream at January 20, 2006 06:36 PM

Very, very cool...

Posted by Josh at January 20, 2006 06:49 PM

It's a bird, it's a plane...no, it's a Streetcar!
looks 'faster than a speeding bullet' :p

Posted by rosh at January 20, 2006 07:03 PM

Beautful photo, perhaps in should be "in transit"...

Posted by A.R. at January 20, 2006 07:53 PM

*blink*

Wow.

Posted by mel at January 20, 2006 07:53 PM

king and richmond are parallel streets.
but other than that, an excellent photograph. it looks as though the streetcar streaks are coming out of the windows of that commercial building.

Posted by Joni at January 20, 2006 08:18 PM

Wow, I really love this picture. I like the light reflecting off the cables overhead and the still cars to the far right. Great work!

Posted by Mark at January 20, 2006 08:36 PM

wow!
i've already seen a lot of shots with a mark of a runnning train, tram or other vechicles, but this is *definitely* the best of this kind i've ever seen
i love the colors and... oh, it is wonderful :)

Posted by Lama at January 20, 2006 08:55 PM

cool shot - but king and richmond run parallel (?)

Posted by e at January 20, 2006 09:08 PM

It almost seems like Flash (the superhero) ran by. :)

Posted by mari at January 20, 2006 09:45 PM

Those cables are an eyesore!

Posted by Hitesh Sawlani (hitkaiser) at January 20, 2006 09:57 PM

Excellent shot Sam, is there a possibility you could release a desktop version of this?

Also is this one 3s exposure or multiple shots together?

Cheers, John.

Posted by Liyster at January 21, 2006 06:18 AM
