Comments: moon

Wow, this is awesome ! Looks like you're seeing it through a telescope.

How do you get a shot of the moon like this. You must have a monster lens to get this clarity = lovely.

Posted by slashermct at January 15, 2006 07:51 AM

Excellent shot. So sharp and detailed.

That's a great shot of the moon, Sam, particularly the exposure! I assume you didn't take this from Toronto - wouldn't the city lights affect the sky?

Posted by Claude B at January 15, 2006 09:52 AM

The say before yesterday was really nice, hitting 7 degrees and all of a sudden yesterday was freezing. You must of a really cool camera to get that up close. Interesting shot.

i'm glad you put that up, i've been meaning to ask you...how easy is it to take a shot like this and get the defenition of the moon's surface?

Posted by rich at January 15, 2006 11:11 AM

thats great. i was just trying to get some moon shots last night, nothing came out as good as this!

Posted by Jesse at January 15, 2006 11:20 AM

It's beautiful. Desktop sizes, maybe?

Posted by Mady at January 15, 2006 11:37 AM

Wish my 10x optical zoom would get me this close to the moon! Fabulous. Very clean and no moon glow/flare. :-)

Posted by DeWaun at January 15, 2006 11:41 AM

The moon was actually full last night

Wow! I have not seen such an image of moon before. Which camera did you use to get this? Excellent result my friend.

Very well done, Sam; but do you realize the extent to which you have surpassed yourself this time?
Some while ago you posted an image of a pumpkin wagon and field; also, one of a cemetery; both of which astounded some of your viewers (including me) because they were taken from a moving car. Now, please consider; the car may have been travelling at, say, 60 Kms/hr.
This time you were standing on a planet
orbiting at about 29.8 Kms/sec while rotating at .47 Kms/sec.
The mathematics involved is beyond me, but that's going by pretty darned quickly! Using a tripod would not have been cheating, but was that a really fast bit of panning?

The clarity of this shot is amazing. I have tried to capture shots like this but the clarity just isn't there. Then again I'm not using an L series lens. Any special post processing done with this one?

Addenda:
In comparing the obvious difficulties of taking a subject at the speed of a car as opposed to the speed of the planet, we may be overlooking a major factor.

Making the shots from the car; you were sitting, very likely, quite comfortably on the inside and working through the window.

When shooting from the planet; you were, apparently, standing boldly on the outside surface.

I would suggest that very few of us could achieve such a good clear shot while standing on the hood of a car moving at, say, a mere 600 miles per hour.

I'm sort of glad there is probably a law against trying it :-)

Funny, my 200mm L lense gave me about half the size of this shot. Is this blown up or were you 50% closer to the moon than I am.... (?)

Posted by James at January 16, 2006 04:34 PM

i tried out the ol' 210 lens trying to get a shot of the moon not too long ago, and got the same result as james here. ive been trying to photograph the moon like this for weeks now, but i have no idea what im doing wrong!

Posted by kans at January 17, 2006 12:45 AM

how in the world did you take this picture?! i've never had a successful moon shot... ofcourse my camera has a bit to do with it. but this is amazing.

Posted by nazzie at January 17, 2006 06:43 PM

Wow! This is beautiful. The contrast and hidden half of the moon are fantastic! Great color and composition too.

Posted by Abe at January 18, 2006 04:39 AM

Hey Sam, brilliant photo, as always! :) And this one jumped out at me, cos I did a similar one (though nowhere as good as yours).
