Comments: flatiron building

Man, super nice color and feel. Seems almost like an artist's rendering.

Posted by Pete Baker at January 12, 2006 01:48 AM

is it just me or does that building look like it's on fire?

nice photo nonetheless.

Posted by mike at January 12, 2006 02:03 AM

This photo is very nice, im assuming it was a cloudy day, great composition and the strong cartoonish color gives it a sureal look, nice photo

Posted by brendan at January 12, 2006 02:10 AM

such steady hands for 1/20!! Very nice photo

Posted by Matt at January 12, 2006 02:43 AM

We have a building just like that here in Manchester UK - lovely crisp shot it seems to jump out at you

Posted by AndyM at January 12, 2006 03:15 AM

Sweet shot! Can you give an idea of what kind of sharpening you used on that?

Posted by James at January 12, 2006 03:27 AM

Wow! My favourite one for ages. Love the contrast between the ultra-modern in the distance and the comparatively old flatiron building in the foreground. Colours are great. Somehow looks wider angle than 17mm, too -- maybe it's because of the 'inbuilt' distortion in the building itself...

Keep it up!

Posted by Paul Russell at January 12, 2006 03:28 AM

Wow. The contrast between the new and old buildings really makes it look like a photomontage.
Nice composition...

Posted by Xr at January 12, 2006 03:46 AM

Wonderful light and colors. I really love your shots.

Posted by simone at January 12, 2006 03:46 AM

Stunning - this is a great shot! I love the perspective and colors. Excellent!

Posted by Abe at January 12, 2006 04:03 AM

I'd like to be the first to say:

Wow.

I especially love the contrast of the flatiron building's sharp colors against the backdrop of gray buildings.

Magnifique

You nailed it as always Sam. Amazing shot, really vivid and like a scene from a movie, kinda makes me think of Gotham or Metropolis! :)

Posted by Daragh Mc Grrath at January 12, 2006 06:04 AM

You captured really nice colors in this shot, Sam. Admire your work

Posted by Haakon at January 12, 2006 06:13 AM

It feels like a comic book movie, like Gotham city (but more cheerful). I think it's because it's the juxtaposition of old and new -- and the sharpness.

Posted by joanium at January 12, 2006 06:31 AM

very nice composition and nice angle.
perfect sharpness and contrast...

Posted by Pooriya at January 12, 2006 06:32 AM

Very nice shot. I like the muted colours, sort of dull gray with the red brick. Any chance of a wallpaper version?

Posted by Cameron at January 12, 2006 06:44 AM

Wow, I love this picture! It has a surreal look to it, especially with the smokey windows of the firestation. Almost looks like something out of Gotham city.

Excellent picture :)

Posted by Mike at January 12, 2006 06:47 AM

wow this looks futuristic, like they stuck that old building in the middle of all this new age city, very cool.

Posted by ben at January 12, 2006 06:51 AM

this is amazing sam... sometimes its hard to find new words for something thats amazing but this is truly special.
its like a painting, did you alter it in photoshop?
well done

Posted by mark at January 12, 2006 06:56 AM

wow.. this shot seems like one straight out from a movie.. the richness of the color and the overcast sky and the smoke from the top of the building creates a cinematic mood.. great work! ;p

Posted by jxiong at January 12, 2006 07:04 AM

Excellent shot Sam. The tiny Flatiron building amidst the huge concrete towers gives a look of history and heritage in an otherwise modern city. Keep it up!

Posted by Lucas A at January 12, 2006 07:07 AM

Yeah it was pretty grey yesterday. Kinda liked it that way. That building is very cool to take a photo of. It is very unique. You can see Old Toronto and new Toronto just by the different buildings.

Posted by NoLabels at January 12, 2006 07:54 AM

This is stunning Sam. This is my favourite photo since the pumpkin patch. It has a very dreamlike, almost background matte painting quality to it. I'd be very interested to see what kind of processing was applied to this image.

Posted by schmee at January 12, 2006 08:09 AM

What a fresh take on a much-photographed building! Marvellous!

Posted by Vicki at January 12, 2006 08:14 AM

The best photo of Toronto I've ever seen.

Posted by chogno at January 12, 2006 08:22 AM

oh my god... is that building on fire or is it a cloud? you are so lucky to live in toronto, i found it beautiful. i live in marcos juarez, cordoba, argentina and this is so diferent, a little town, lovely, but soooo diferent. great to see your pictures.

Posted by paula at January 12, 2006 08:23 AM

Really amazing! This shot have something of surreal. Looks like the buildings were put there as a Lego construction. Great work!

Posted by nuno f at January 12, 2006 08:25 AM

Wow! what a nice shot. Razor sharp clarity as if I am standing in the scene it self.

Posted by Mnmohan Bhatt at January 12, 2006 08:34 AM

I like the mixing of vintage and modern architecture! Great capture. Very crisp focus.

Posted by DeWaun at January 12, 2006 08:39 AM

Beautiful sheen to this one! Actually saw you with your tripod on the northeast corner of this block last night. I was driving by and unfortunately traffic did not allow me the chance to stop and say hi.

Posted by Jonah at January 12, 2006 08:58 AM

I want this on my desktop!! Excellent photo.

Posted by Zack at January 12, 2006 09:00 AM

Nice shot ! I like it.

The left building in the back seems to go from out of Metropolis.

I insist, but it will be really really great when it will be possible for each shot to see the "before" and the "after" your digital darkroom spells :-p

Kind regards,
Y.

desktop sized image avalable?

Posted by noah at January 12, 2006 09:16 AM

hey, that's one of the coolest pictures i've seen of the flatiron building (probably one of the most-photographed Toronto icons). Nice.

Posted by A thinker at January 12, 2006 09:19 AM

Great shot!

Posted by *jeanne* at January 12, 2006 09:28 AM

I think the photo is fantastic. The saturated colours and well defined lines brings my attention the the subject straight away. *applause*

Another great shot Sam.

Posted by Mali at January 12, 2006 10:40 AM

Great art has something that speaks to different things to many people. By reading the comments up to this point, this picture definately qualifies. I'm just so happy that a photographer of your calibre happens to live and shoot in my home city. Might I be the fourth or the fifth person by now to humbly request this in wallpaper size?

Posted by Graham at January 12, 2006 11:09 AM

Magnificent!

Posted by Kathleen at January 12, 2006 11:20 AM

Wow that looks like something out of Project Gotham Racing 3, if they were ever to put in Toronto as a city. Sort of surreal. Good job.

Posted by Raffi at January 12, 2006 11:20 AM

As i've said before, your tones are always intriguing. Well... not always always but this picture is an excellent example. Keep up the wonder!

Posted by PlasticTV at January 12, 2006 12:14 PM

hmmm, not meaning to take anything away from this great picture, but i WAS wondering if YOU would ever do this most-cliché toronto motif! heh!(for all non-torontonians, it's in almost every tourist guide of toronto ever published). in vindication of this picture, i admire your choice NOT to do persepective correction on this shot (which, in the end, makes it not-cliché!)

Posted by teod at January 12, 2006 12:45 PM

The best of the year, so far!

Posted by Mark Ellis at January 12, 2006 01:04 PM

wait! now i know! there's a movement in photography right now which puts vernacular photography on a big pedestal. fotos that LOOK like they were taken straight out of a family album of banal snapshots... but with SUBTLE differences, even if the difference is, say, just an extremely high technical quality unlikely of a snapshop. not saying you're toady to anything as low as a "movement", but the analysis sortof fit in with the picture of nathan phillips from the day before...

Posted by teod at January 12, 2006 01:14 PM

GOTHAM CITY!!!

Nice contrast between desaturation and color...

Posted by VelviaPix - feeling of color at January 12, 2006 01:36 PM

Beautiful colors and scene! Also very smooth.

Posted by Foto Vejnar at January 12, 2006 01:58 PM

Wow! Another story-teller picture of you! Purely beautiful.
I have to confirm AndyM's comments about the same building in Manchester UK. There are lots and lots of such buildings here in Manchester however, none of them with such a back ground though.
Try our city once, you will love it when you see it.

Posted by Payam at January 12, 2006 02:00 PM

I've been an addict of your site for a few weeks now, but this is one of my faves. In addition to being an amazing shot - the colour and structure of the building just pop! - it also reminds me of a happy time when my kids were small and I would walk with them through that area to meet their dad for lunch at the fountain (just west of the building). Thanks, and keep them coming!

Posted by Carolyn at January 12, 2006 02:04 PM

How cool is this. The strange building makes me remember a dream I had. The whole picture is kind of dreamlike.

Posted by Verena at January 12, 2006 02:12 PM

wow...toronto is such a beautiful city. your pictures are great...thank you for the daily eye candy.

Posted by linda at January 12, 2006 02:24 PM

Great shot. Classic.

The building that looks like it's on fire is the TD tower at BCE place, the base of which you might remember from this picture: (http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/archives/photos_architecture/060104_1419.shtml).

I think the "smoke" is steam and heat from the building's heating system reacting with the cold air (not 100% sure though). I can assume everyone that it is NOT on fire and is like this all through the winter.

Posted by Dan at January 12, 2006 02:41 PM

This has to be one of Toronto's more interesting heritage buildings. Quite like the one in New York city on Times square, though that one went through a very clever rebuild to use the original frame and space. With luck Toronto will get to keep the flat iron. The area is sure spiffed up since I last went bye it.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at January 12, 2006 02:49 PM

really a lovely shot.. mesmerizing colrs of thata building n ya, the structure rocks !!

Posted by prasoon at January 12, 2006 03:26 PM

Sam, that's just stunning. There's no other word for it. We're waiting for our new home to be built in that neighbourhood; this picture makes me feel homesick for a place we've not even lived in yet!

Please, please, *please* make a desktop version out of this one. It might actually be my favourite ddoi picture ever.

Incredible!

Posted by Lt. Dan at January 12, 2006 03:49 PM

That's true, it's looks like a 3D rendering using radiosity...it's very strange...this architecture is very interesting.

Posted by mistralcolors at January 12, 2006 03:50 PM

Also one of my favourites. But you seldom disappoint.

Posted by Jan at January 12, 2006 04:00 PM

Amazing, superbly shot Sam.

Posted by mohsen rasoulov at January 12, 2006 04:23 PM

This is great. This is way I voted for you!

Posted by Stefan Verhaar at January 12, 2006 04:33 PM

Incredible, one can find thousands of photos of the flatiron but this one has such an original perspective, I love it.

Posted by A.R. at January 12, 2006 04:35 PM

I love this shot, it's so clean and crisp.

Posted by noushin at January 12, 2006 05:07 PM

Wonderful picture. I request for a wallpaper please.

Posted by Ayan at January 12, 2006 05:12 PM

Great shot, looks like a painting. :)

Posted by Miguel at January 12, 2006 05:33 PM

No offense, it's a pretty standard shot to me and I'm curious as to why so many people find it so incredible.

Posted by B.Caraway at January 12, 2006 05:55 PM

Great cartoonish quality... the background and left side look like they are in black-and-white. Great composition and sense of geometry.

Posted by Joyce at January 12, 2006 06:05 PM

Here is the other end of this building too:

http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/archives/photos_architecture/040914_806.shtml

I like Sam's shots of this building as others have said too, because they are from different angles than usually done. Typically they are shot from straight on the thin edge. That is pretty easy to get too as the street physically splits there to go on either side of the building, providing a nice median to stand on to get that angle and not get hit by a car.

Posted by Pete at January 12, 2006 06:10 PM

Awesome capture of the building. Is the background masked?

Posted by m.aubie at January 12, 2006 06:41 PM

history. great.

Posted by effat at January 12, 2006 06:44 PM

Ive always liked photography, but I never really thought of it as something to do with my life. But after looking at those amazing city shots you got in downtown Toranto, you inspired me to start a career in it. I hope some day I can be up to your standards.

Posted by An Inspiring Photographer at January 12, 2006 07:00 PM

wow. absolutely perfect composition and saturation... wow.

Posted by jon at January 12, 2006 07:18 PM

What wonderful light!!! The glassiness of the windows and the saturation of the red brick is all truly great. Nice photograph.

Posted by dave foster at January 12, 2006 07:23 PM

Nice - how come there is no traffic? When ever I try this shot the junction is so busy!

Posted by resolution at January 12, 2006 07:43 PM

We have a flatiron here in Belfast (Northern Ireland). There is a very small bar inside, and coinsidently enough I went in it today with a friend for the first time! Great shot!

Posted by Phil at January 12, 2006 07:44 PM

A lot of pictures have been taken of the flatiron --definitely takes some balls to try and take your own! Amazing amazing shot, Sam. You really did capture it differently than I've ever seen it. Wallpaper?

Posted by Robyn at January 12, 2006 07:55 PM

Woah -- I pass by this building and area all the time, but this is a surreal photo of it all. It looks like it's CGI. Amazing!

Posted by Soloman at January 12, 2006 08:21 PM

Wow, amazing. Would love to set this as my desktop. Any chance of a larger one.

Posted by Ian at January 12, 2006 08:46 PM

Very Professional, the impression on the building brings it to life

Posted by Steve at January 12, 2006 08:57 PM

This is surreal 'cuz it's been photoshopped. but it is more interesting than the Nathan Philip Square one.

Posted by Boreo at January 12, 2006 11:20 PM

holy cow sam, thats what i'm talking about! way to go man. there's so much to be said about this picture, and most of it has been said above. you know this is one of your best!

Posted by shane j montgomery at January 12, 2006 11:27 PM

Woah, what a architecture mix, that`s great!

Posted by Eva at January 13, 2006 03:18 AM

In this day and age of what I perceive as unimaginative architecture, it's great to see well-kept buildings of old that actually *look* like they've been built by people.

Posted by patrick at January 13, 2006 09:55 AM

I look at your blog every single day and this is my favorite shot ever. I love the way the CN Tower is kind of snuck in the back corner. I am getting a D-rebel soon and I can't wait. Too bad we don't have more interesting things to take pics of here in Oklahoma! I'll be moving to Toronto in late summer with my boyrfriend and I can't wait to be able to take some pics of something interesting. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Posted by Krista at January 13, 2006 12:43 PM

some of the buildings look 2 dimentional and the others look 3-d. looks like you superimposed two pictures. very cool.

Posted by rosh at January 13, 2006 01:59 PM

Wow! There's something surreal about this shot. Amazing!
