Beautiful pictures, thank you.

As amazing as the fireworks are, I'm far more intrigued by the cellphones. It's amazing, isn't it?

Happy New Years!

Posted by Ayesha at January 1, 2006 05:42 AM

Hey hope you keep up with the daily updates, your blog is trully the best. The number of camera phones in the photo is quite surprising, I bet if one looked at a photo of last years event, there would have been very few if any. Thanks for your hard work on this site, good luck, and Happy New Year!

Posted by Eugene at January 1, 2006 05:44 AM

What a way to start the new year, you may not have had long to prepare, but these are just fantastic, I love the cellphones!

Good luck for 2006, I'll be there everyday as in 2005.

Happy New Year!

As always, your photos take my breath away.

One thing, though - can anyone else see the Grim Reaper-shaped thing on the left in the second photo hovering just above what looks like a Christmas tree?

I wish you all luck in 2006, from Holland (Groningen). By the way I was shocked about the pictures from the girl :( so sad. Still the pictures are so nice.

Greetings,

Marc

Sam... Thank you for a great 2005 captured in fotos. I don't think I could adequately express my thanks and appreciation to you, as you have opened up a whole new world to me, and challenged me to be better.

These are wonderful pictures. It's great to be able to bump up to ISO 1600 when needed and find a manageable shutter speed with a DSLR! I don't see a hint of noise here, and the fotos are both very well captured.

All the best to you and yours in 2006!

Maybe working under the pressure of "late" made it better. Or saved you having to decide which was the one or two you'd display?

I'd say they display well what was going on.

Those camera screens are a weird new thing to night crowds.

Beautiful images, Sam; but the cellphones are really intiguing. Not of the cellphone generation, I know nothing about these things or the manner of their use, never stood close to one. Is it not likely that many cellphones were there, but blocked from the camera? I would guess that some might be blocked from view by some one's head; some, perhaps, held too low to be seen by the camera, etc. What percentage of the total cellphones present would you guess are actually shown in the pictures? If a survey could confirm a total, wouldn't that be a great subject for a guessing contest?

Posted by Ron at January 1, 2006 11:27 PM

Addenda: regarding the percentage of cellphones present but unseen by the camera.
In the second picture, isn't that very faint glimmer, not as bright as the other cellphones, on the extreme left side, the monitor of a Nikon Coolpix 5700?

Posted by Ron at January 1, 2006 11:55 PM

Thanks for all the inspiration - best wishes for 2006....
