Comments: snowy cornfield

I like this photo a lot. And I enjoy being in situations like the one you were in, its a good rush! And even better that you got some photos in the process.

Impressive! I´ve never seen a view like that.

Love the detail in the corn - unique shot

Posted by AndyM at December 6, 2005 04:55 AM

nice, i wish we had some snow down here in germany...

Posted by moritz at December 6, 2005 07:15 AM

Sam, this is stunning. The exposure and contrast are first rate and handheld at that speed it's sharp as a tack. Makes me want to hike out to the local single field that's still standing and try one myself.

Posted by Richard at December 6, 2005 07:20 AM

WOW I love this one! The colors and the subject are fascinating. Nice shoot!

Posted by Mathieu Douville at December 6, 2005 07:47 AM

Very effective and the exposed cobs add to the visula interest

Posted by john at December 6, 2005 07:55 AM

lol! there really is an intertesting story bethind this interesting pic! this is the best ive seen in days....

Posted by Hitesh at December 6, 2005 08:19 AM

Wierd.
What's with all the wasted corn?
There was a similar field up by Keele and Teston. The corn was left on there until just a few weeks ago (long dead).
Is there a market for dead corn or something?

I've come to the conclusion that when it comes to photoblogs, yours just can't be beat! Your photos are incredible (You've made me want to own a Canon digital rebel...too bad I can't afford one)

Posted by Jaxie at December 6, 2005 08:29 AM

What a memorable shot!

Just goes to show the great lengths you're willing to go to for your art Sam!

I hope the owner didn't catch you guys :(

Posted by Afreen at December 6, 2005 08:30 AM

FYI. Sweet corn is a healthy snack for raccoons. I hope they don't mind the frozen ones.

Posted by Boreo at December 6, 2005 08:56 AM

very nice and very cold!! I can't wait to hear more about your run from trouble. I can't believe you were able to get a clear shot while running from someone! :) LoL Here in the south, if you get caught on a farm, you run from the farmer with a shotgun!

Posted by stephanie at December 6, 2005 09:28 AM

I don't know weather it's the medicine I'm on, or if I am truly in awe. But this is my favorite photo you've ever taken!!

Coop.

P.s. Did you guys get raped? Sorry I couldn't resist.

Posted by keith at December 6, 2005 09:51 AM

Oh right on, I really like this shot. The tones are just great on the white snowy backdrop. Well done! I look forwad to more from this series.

Posted by Dan at December 6, 2005 10:14 AM

"and this is when we're trying to hide and escape from the owner!"

is this why the photo is late today?

Posted by sami jan at December 6, 2005 10:19 AM

you know you're a committed photographer when you're taking photos even when you're in danger of being caught!

great tones and textures.

Posted by payam at December 6, 2005 10:29 AM

The corn on the stalks is not being wasted, it's not meant for eating, this is feed corn that the farmer will sell as silage or as pig feed. It was never meant for human consumption....Nice shot by the way!

Posted by kat at December 6, 2005 10:37 AM

Great shot. It reminds me of the great sequence Hitchcock put together in NORTH BY NORTHWEST when Cary Grant's character tries to evade the crop duster out to kill him in the corn field. The photo captures that childlike sense of grand adventure of hiding out from someone.

Posted by Anne Gautreau at December 6, 2005 10:48 AM

I'm just surprized to see corn still standing anywhere. Nice shot though.

Posted by Nate at December 6, 2005 10:58 AM

Crazy story, I read it on chris' site. Funny, but probably not at the time!! Nice pic by the way.

Posted by Lyla at December 6, 2005 11:21 AM

Please show us some pics of the crazy tractor. We know you have some! ;)

Posted by j_ro at December 6, 2005 11:29 AM

Holy sh*t dude lol i read what happened through sigmas photo blog site of what went down, thats Freakin crazy haha. anyways sick pic.

Posted by Carlos at December 6, 2005 11:36 AM

Gorgeous shot, Sam! The tones, textures and composition are lovely. Beauty in decay.

I feel sad about the old farmer, though. Who wouldn't be half-crazed, living like that, and likely alone. I wonder if he is desperately trying to hold on to his way of life while ugly housing developments and malls creep ever-closer.......

There's a big challenge for you - find beauty and character in a new subdivision!

Posted by Kathy at December 6, 2005 11:58 AM

Well, more it looks like a cemetery... Specially these dead brown and yellow colors in corn leaves and stems remember me deads' bones and hairs...

Posted by Salman at December 6, 2005 12:22 PM

Very original and memorable. It is really great seeing these really original shots come up. And reading the background story just make me appreciate this picture more.

Posted by gck at December 6, 2005 01:07 PM

looks like a crazy day....
anyway, great picture you have here. As always, colors are amazing.
Thanks

Posted by nicolas at December 6, 2005 01:30 PM

mmm
corn!

Posted by flying cow at December 6, 2005 01:35 PM

I wish we got snow like that here in N. Texas. Did you manage to escape the farmer? Nice composition.

Posted by clarence at December 6, 2005 01:53 PM

Don't trespass in rural Ontario.

We don't pitch a tent on your lawn or pee in your condo lobby.

Hugh

PS I really like this photo. I see lots of corn fileds but this captures it all.

Posted by sara at December 6, 2005 03:55 PM

Definitely a farmer with a shutgun... and also very much "shining".
Your picture with Chris's story match perfect.

Posted by Ninjaess at December 6, 2005 04:51 PM

I have been enjoying your photos for over a month, now. I am very impressed with all of them. Good work!

P.S. I voted for you. :)

Posted by Karen at December 6, 2005 05:01 PM

This is a marvelous photo (and I never use the word marvelous)

Posted by Dominic at December 6, 2005 05:26 PM

Great shot! Good that the farmer didn't have a shot gun ... you wouldn't have had an ear to stand on '-)

Posted by Ian at December 6, 2005 06:31 PM

Wonderful image of the corn, and also find images on Chris’ site!

But I can’t condone trespassing, especially around farm animals. Putting this in perspective, could I walk around your home without permission, taking pictures? Even more to the point, could I walk around your place of business, in the middle of your equipment, without your permission?

Wonderful corn image — I’ll most certainly keep watching your images. But more respect for property rights would be appreciated, please.

Posted by Mark at December 6, 2005 07:16 PM

Good one.. really love the corn detail peeping out.. amazing way you've used DOF

Posted by Rahul at December 6, 2005 09:38 PM

Sam should have snuck a couple shots of the guys face after Chris asked him what happedend to his tires :P That would have been a funny shot

Posted by Cody at December 6, 2005 11:47 PM

Kinda looks like Creepy Camouflaged Horses with rotting teeth, at first.

wow. it does.

Posted by Stefanie at December 6, 2005 11:57 PM

really neat shot, I like the colours.

Posted by lisa at December 7, 2005 02:45 AM

Wonderful shot. Unfortunate incident, though it will certainly teach you.

Posted by Phil at December 7, 2005 06:30 PM

I like the feeling here... does seem like you're hiding. You have my vote, Sam!

Posted by Abe at December 9, 2005 04:01 PM

Great shot! Colors and focusing detail are great. I had a very similiar experience with some unfriendly land owners. Too much to type, but glad you all are okay!

Posted by Chris at December 12, 2005 05:34 AM

You're getting some great traffic, and no wonder with photos like this. Like the 43 before me, I have to say this is a wonderful shot, one of my favorites. I do, however, find it a bit corny (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Posted by Zee at December 16, 2005 12:50 PM

Oh wow! Great shot! I enjoy the exposed piece of corn in the forground.

Posted by Christopher Webb at December 24, 2005 01:16 PM

it is very nice .colors and ... .
I don't say any things .

Posted by Mahdi at June 9, 2006 05:10 PM

Fantastic, grim photo. I had exactly the same impression as Stefanie. I was amazed no-one else did.

Wonderful photoblog.

Posted by Ray at October 6, 2006 10:59 AM

Amazing how the corn resembles a horse. Beautiful shot.
