Where in Toronto is this? Would anyone be kind enough to stick a Google Maps link up somewhere?

Posted by PercentVol at December 1, 2005 05:40 AM

Nice picture but what a waste of public money. They should have thought what tey needed before jumping to construction.

That's awesome! Where exactly is it?

If I recall correctly these pillars are what remains of the eastern exit of the Gardiner, when it was dismantled past the Don Valley turnoff.

Some pics I took during the dismantling:

Nice shot, as usual, but an inaccurate comment. The eastern end of the Gardnier was indeed built - my dad used it every time we went downtown - but the deck was torn down a few years ago. Not sure why the pillars were lefdt intact as one of the reasons it was decommissioned was the fact that certain pillars kept shedding concrete and needed constant repairs (mutiple contractors worked on the project and the different levels of quality control are still makiing themselves apparent).

Have a great day.

This makes me love Toronto even more. The fact that they would do something like that. In my town they would just leave it for scum to smash up.

At least something was made of them. Nice shot. I like the cracks in the pillar and the sun glow on the right side.

i never even knew these existed. great pic!

Interesting use of those.

Great composition, and I really like the light. That's a great use of what otherwise would have been wasted space and resources.

I didn't know this existed! Despite living not so far from Toronto.

Sam, you should send in this picture to be a part of the project!

Wow!! Thanks for this one, Sam. I hadn't heard of this deal and it looks like a fabulous idea. That they had such an imaginative way of not wasting money pulling the pillars down is encouraging progressive thought.

You sure cover a lot of ground on your bike. A car can often be a hazard and anchor that's in the way when you're looking for the off beat and trying to get near it.

Sam, this good shot and nice perspective.

wow, I live in Toronto, work at the distillery, and I have never before seen these! Definately on my list of things to see around town.
The colours and shadows in this shot are quite interesting.

wowwwwwwwwww! this is like so cool i cant belive it

Posted by kristy at December 1, 2005 01:44 PM

I live right near these. I like them as well.

The pillers did used to rain chunks of concrete, but this was because of the use of de-icing salt on the roaddeck which caused the rebar to swell up. Take away the roaddeck and problem solved!

Also, wasn't there a picutre of this very same thing on DDOI a long while back?

Great shot. Those photos on the art pillars look pretty good too.

Yeah, im almost sure this is a dupe. Still nicely done.

I personally love the 'bones' of the Gardiner, and I love this shot. Saw this picture in my 'Spacing Magazine'; aswell as your amazing picture inside the Don Valley Brickworks.

Yes, I remember the similar photos on DDOI some months back. That picture became very famous on the Internet. It was featured on another website where people created their variations of Sam's original photo. I forget the name of the website. Interesting cityscape nonetheless.

so thats why the pillars are there, i thought it was actually for some art. why did they stp building it?

Posted by Ayan at December 1, 2005 11:07 PM

That off-ramp used to take me to my "Cool Aunt's" place in the Beaches.

I can still see that gritty, industrial off-ramp to Lake Shore East when I look at the pillars.

I can also hear the rhythm of the cars tumbling off of it.

Missing you Toronto...

I love the fact that they did that, and that they didnt completely go to waste. So unusual; they look great.

Posted by Phil at December 2, 2005 07:48 PM

these are located at leslie st. and lakestore blvd. they are all thats remaining of the off ramp from the garder "stump" as it was called. these were the pillars that held up the leslie st offramp of the eastern stump of the gardner expressway and it was used daily by zillions of commuters including me untill a few years ago when they dismantled it due to high maintenance costs. these pillars were ugly and looked poorly maintained before they dismantled the roadbed above. then they renovated these pillars to be left in the lakeshore linear park as a historical/art piece. its possible to climb the shorter pillars and sometimes you can see people sitting on them reading or relaxing.
