Comments: clouds over cemetery

Looks like something out of a video game.

Posted by Fen in Toronto at November 28, 2005 01:38 AM

...wow!

Love the clouds and the different shades of blue in the sky.

Posted by Geremy F at November 28, 2005 02:07 AM

nice shot. maybe a typo of north-east

Posted by willie at November 28, 2005 02:11 AM

amazing cloud formations. They almost look motion blurred, but that can't be given how crisp the headstones are. This is a stunning shot. The graveyard almost looks a like a city in the distance.

Posted by pfong at November 28, 2005 03:11 AM

i think it was north-east of toronto. funny connection anyway: in germany morth sounds like "mord" which means "murder".

Posted by largo at November 28, 2005 03:16 AM

Fantastic! If I had a request for a desktop, this would be it. I have been enjoying your site for over a year now. Keep up the great work!

Posted by Ryan Swift at November 28, 2005 03:24 AM

Funny how easily you can take pictures from moving cars... I wish I was that good! Kudos kudos kudos

PS: Wallpaper please!!!

Posted by Marcello (Italy) at November 28, 2005 04:02 AM

those clouds are amazing! the markers look like a little town! that's a great picture! a little depressing -- but great! the color and composition are very "tim-burton-esque" and I love that!

Posted by stephanie at November 28, 2005 05:03 AM

it's very nice shot. beautiful sky and nice view of the city.
regards

Posted by Pooriya at November 28, 2005 05:33 AM

You have a talent for getting good moving car shots.

Posted by dan at November 28, 2005 05:35 AM

Is that the same driver as from the 'pumpkin field' photo ? If so, you need definitely a new one. :D:D Very nice clouds up there

Posted by Forxxx at November 28, 2005 05:44 AM

Surreal atmosphere to this one. Good use of thirds

Posted by Andy M at November 28, 2005 05:49 AM

Nice, really nice

Posted by axier at November 28, 2005 06:30 AM

gorgeous. i always have that "moving car wanna stop" but usually whoevers driving doesn't care.

morth-east? ;)

Posted by jackie at November 28, 2005 06:45 AM

Dear Sam – over the years I have been very skeptical about your high quality yet (mostly) postcard-boring photos. This one is really beautiful, well done.

Posted by david at November 28, 2005 07:01 AM

it looks like small town, far far away...

In some way the shot of all the tomb stones being so small compared to the sky makes it look like a city, so at first glance I thought they were buildings scattered across a field. The clouds look so daunting and close to the ground.

What an amazing shot (as always)!

Posted by Khadeeja at November 28, 2005 08:23 AM

Great! Looks like a still form a film, nice black letterbox!!!

Posted by XiaoFeng at November 28, 2005 08:43 AM

really nice shot

Posted by Flo at November 28, 2005 09:09 AM

This looks incredible, but perhaps you went overboard on post-processing.

Posted by Jesse at November 28, 2005 09:27 AM

Wow. From a moving car, eh? Did I mention "wow" yet? Great photo, amazing sky!! (I'd love to hear about the post-processing on this one.)

Posted by Dan at November 28, 2005 09:28 AM

The dark foresky looks fake - too dark - like it's been Photoshoped.

I'm not sure getting closer would have made it any more interesting. At this distance it looks as much like city buildings as it does a cemetary.

Not one of your great ones, Sam.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at November 28, 2005 09:39 AM

Mmm... Morth-East. ;)

Very nicely done, Sam.

Posted by Chris at November 28, 2005 09:59 AM

I like this, very cinematic, almost surreal. I almost wish that I didn't know that it was a graveyard, i like the idea that I would have to guess what the things in the distance would be, slightly spoilt the mystery. Fantastic sky though!

Posted by rhys at November 28, 2005 10:29 AM

Wow. Never posted before on ddoi, but i've been a longtime lurker. There's just something so ethereal about this picture that I can't describe in words...

This is the kind of place I would love to be buried in.

Posted by Graham at November 28, 2005 10:45 AM

I like the aspect ratio, this really looks like an establishing shot from a creepy movie. Especially if those clouds were sped up to buils and then fly across the screen...you get what I mean?

Posted by Sam at November 28, 2005 10:53 AM

nice shot, the spirits are the clouds

Posted by arikan at November 28, 2005 10:55 AM

in 16:9 letter box. how cinematic! Can i get a pan and scan version?

Posted by tee at November 28, 2005 11:40 AM

wow, really looks like a little town. Very alive for a cemetery.
cool mate-painting.

Posted by nicolas at November 28, 2005 12:28 PM

Makes the transitory-ness of life vivid!
A closer shot, by you, would obviously be good but...

Don't ever crop that black bottom.

Others mentioned post-processing. Sure looks vibrantly realistic to me!

Definitely looks like a scene from a movie. Very strong image. Are those really markers and not houses? This would definitely be better if the pp transition between the sky and ground is worked more carefully.

Posted by gck at November 28, 2005 12:49 PM

wall paper please?

Posted by noah at November 28, 2005 12:51 PM

Wow, what a dramatic picture! I love the contrast between the tiny, rectangular graves and the huge majesty of the wistful clouds. Also an poignant statement, perhaps, about death and the world beyond.

Posted by Soloman at November 28, 2005 12:57 PM

that sky is pants-pooping good.

Posted by bord at November 28, 2005 02:45 PM

i can't figure out how you do those amazing sky scenes. the clouds are just so different. like the ottawa shot you had a while back. must be different layers of processing. i'd love to see a tutorial on this one. the other 2 tutorials were great.

AWEsome!

Posted by flying cow at November 28, 2005 03:56 PM

Hmmm very interesting, only a few questions come to mind when looking at this image.
1. Why the huge contrast in the clouds, at first I thought of a warming filter, but then again some of 'em are too dark...
2. The clouds seem to have a different angle than the horizon and in the right part of the image the clouds seem to fall into the earth.. weird.
3. You cropped the top and the bottom but in the top the image is soo dark it fades in..
Very interesting image..

Posted by Paolo at November 28, 2005 04:01 PM

perfect shot !

Posted by Martin at November 28, 2005 04:32 PM

thats from a moving car?! that looks amazing. so surreal with the colours and the clouds.

Posted by vanessa at November 28, 2005 04:45 PM

Wow! You should just take pictures from moving cars from now on. First the pumpkin one and now this.

Posted by Adam H at November 28, 2005 04:49 PM

The movement of the car seems to have softened up the clouds even more. The range of colors in the sky are wonderful. Moving car or not, a very nice shot.

Posted by Mark D at November 28, 2005 05:45 PM

As Khadeeja said, "In some way the shot of all the tomb stones being so small compared to the sky makes it look like a city, so at first glance I thought they were buildings scattered across a field."
On my monitor, it looks wonderful. Perhaps stopping would have been successful, but I think this captures the scene...and the mood... very well.
Make this a wallpaper and I'll replace your downtown Toronto image!

Posted by ciao!ciuck at November 28, 2005 05:45 PM

You seem to take a lot of great photos from moving cars!

Posted by Hugh at November 28, 2005 06:10 PM

I can hardly believe the feeling of depth from a 2D photo. Very nice capture, Sam. And from a moving car? That's just showing off! :-)

Posted by Rod Thomas at November 28, 2005 06:15 PM

i bet you took a better picture that day

Posted by darren at November 28, 2005 06:44 PM

i think you should go back and shoot this cemetery again. i doubht you'll be able to get the same type of cloud formations but its worth a SHOT.

Posted by kevin at November 28, 2005 08:17 PM

no disrespect, but you haven't had something really spectacular to me on here for a while, but this one is completely solid; it's bright, interesting and different. great shot all around.

Posted by demetrice at November 28, 2005 08:17 PM

I like this picture.
Great sky and holizon!

Posted by goatherd at November 28, 2005 10:18 PM

This is the best photo I've seen on a blog in ages, congrats.
Also, this is my first time commenting on here, I've been following your work for a while, and it is definately getting better.

what a stunning photo. great capture!

Posted by mari at November 28, 2005 11:28 PM

Great shot! it's even more amazing to know it was made from a moving car... for real?? Congratulations

Posted by elpeaton at November 29, 2005 02:11 PM

very ansel adam-ish.

Posted by jenny at November 29, 2005 04:29 PM

Great shot! Maybe a bit too dark, though. And the black bars aren't helping much. Otherwise, wow!

Posted by telly at November 29, 2005 05:11 PM

SAM, U R A MASTER

Posted by davidff at November 29, 2005 05:30 PM

The beautiful clouds show that you were in a moving car. The movie like frame adds a nice touch I think.

Posted by Raffi at November 29, 2005 06:55 PM

wheres the opening credits? this looks as if it was lifted from dvd - great shot sam

Posted by shane j montgomery at November 30, 2005 11:10 AM

Awesome, the letterbox makes it. No, there are so many things that make it. I thought it was buildings a mile away, was surprised and amazed to read cemetary.

Posted by Pete B at December 1, 2005 09:22 PM

wow...that's really all I can say. I love it.

Posted by rosh at December 2, 2005 12:20 PM

Can a get a desktop (1680x1050) size verson of this?

Posted by Tim Meehan at December 6, 2005 01:22 PM

The clouds are striking and I think the picture would have been even more so if you had been able to get closer, as you mentioned. Ah well, another time, another graveyard.

Posted by Joe Wessels at December 8, 2005 05:37 PM

Wow - so interesting! This shot really draws into the imagination.

Posted by Abe at December 9, 2005 04:12 PM

Too much photoshop?

Posted by Strahan at December 14, 2005 02:33 AM

This is an amazing photo.

From the menacing clouds to the metaphor of the graves.
