Beautiful!
Posted by Archagon at November 16, 2005 02:28 AMwow, awesome color. a bit reminiscent of sin city, except in color. this photo definitely speaks a thousand words, and then some.
Posted by rich at November 16, 2005 02:28 AM...nice shot! It's snow for us in the central B.C. interior. I hope to be able to get out on the weekend for some nice landscapes.
Posted by Insta Marv at November 16, 2005 02:35 AMI love the way the headlight patterns fan out through the night air and the hard, familiar reflections in the pavement are just too sexy.
Posted by RYanK at November 16, 2005 02:44 AMReminds me of Hopper paintings. :)
Posted by owen-b at November 16, 2005 02:46 AMRainy here in Michigan, too...but rain is always more dramatic in Toronto. Great shot.
Posted by William McCain at November 16, 2005 02:51 AMFantastic, again! I love the mood of this picture, and despite what is a regular urban scene, your eyes are inevitably drawn to the pedestrian with the umbrella, especially with the car's headlights directed at him.
Posted by Soloman at November 16, 2005 02:54 AMHello Sam,
I love this one. I love the rain in the night.
Thanks.
Posted by Jean at November 16, 2005 03:16 AMLove it, one of the better ones you've put up recently. I love the blown out highlights, great..."sin city" feel.
it's as if max payne has come to life. except max payne would never own an umbrella...
great shot!
Posted by Asby at November 16, 2005 03:34 AMgreat picture. I love nights like that when you can just go for a walk in the rain for no reason at all.
Posted by Vanella Mead at November 16, 2005 03:53 AMWeather is very pictographic. Great shot.
Posted by Nate at November 16, 2005 04:04 AMGreat photo!! I love the rain in the picture. I hate rain in person. Makes me want to go take advantage of the rain my town is having right now!
Posted by stephanie at November 16, 2005 04:42 AMGreat shot! I like the reflections of the street lights. It reminds me of 'Blade Runner'. I don't know why...
Posted by Mathias Karstädt at November 16, 2005 04:45 AMoutstanding!
Posted by Mary at November 16, 2005 04:51 AMOh sam, this is the best picture you have taken its just so beautiful!
Posted by Keels at November 16, 2005 04:59 AMcan't believe this is handheld. if i held my camera at 1/20s, it'll be a mess... anyway, nice picture :)
Posted by moritz at November 16, 2005 05:53 AMyour pictures are simply good. I have vote by photoblog.
Posted by Rolf at November 16, 2005 06:32 AMThis is awesome.
Posted by Ana at November 16, 2005 06:42 AMVery cool! I wanted to take one similar pic, but was too scared to take camera out during rains :) Now it has stopped raining here.
Keep clicking!
Posted by Varun at November 16, 2005 06:52 AMUnique photo. You do a good job of hand holding slow shutter speeds.
Posted by dan at November 16, 2005 07:15 AMYou don't get to see too many shots in the rain (expensive cameras and water don't mix well). This is quite refreshing. It has a movie set feel to it, the lights and all the reflections look really good. One can just imagine being there. Nice work! Hope your gear stayed dry ;-) - [Chuks]
Posted by EOS Chaos at November 16, 2005 07:15 AMA really great shot, Sam.
I hope you have something less transient than a photoblog in mind for pictures like this one; perhaps a book. Does the city of Toronto have archives in which work of this genre and quality will find a permanent place? If not, it should.
Im sorry to criticize this photo, but I dont think it lives up to your other work. I see some potential in the subject matter, and I like the headlights and the guy crossing the street somewhat, but it just doesn't have that wow factor that your photos usually have. Its rather plain.
Posted by Jesse at November 16, 2005 07:56 AMYesterday, it rained so much in Bergen, Norway, than the police recommended people to stay inside. people died.
Posted by haakon at November 16, 2005 08:08 AMThis is a great scene. Love the colours and how the light is reflected off the street. Nice one!
Posted by Dan at November 16, 2005 08:09 AMYou have captured several moods here in an excellent fashion. The image has elements of an Edward Hopper painting (Nighthawks?) but your ability to allow the viewer's eye to be directed laterally from light into darkness and vertically from the sheen of reflected light into the matte nothingness of the sky adds dimensions of emotion beyond the painted canvas of the artist. Excellent interpretation of a photo subject that is often a cliche.
Posted by Bill at November 16, 2005 08:41 AMNice capture. Where you indoors or outdoors when you took this picture? Its a bit blurry but nice.
Posted by Sharif at November 16, 2005 08:51 AMI'm an amateur photographer who's learning a great deal through absolutely fantastic photos like this. It's like the setting for a horror movie. Great composition.
Love ur work Sam.

Posted by Ryan at November 16, 2005 09:01 AMIncredible Sam

Posted by Paul H. Tieck at November 16, 2005 09:09 AMAmazing colorful reflection!
I don't know how you did it, but I never take pictures in such rainy condition~
Tell me about it ... I'm starved for color with the sun not making an appearance and all the color falling from the trees!
Posted by Tom at November 16, 2005 10:19 AMshimmery. :)
Posted by Krista at November 16, 2005 10:39 AMNice capture considering the conditions.
I think black and white would have been my choice here.
Another winner, Sam. Well done. I feel wet just looking at it.
Posted by Russ at November 16, 2005 10:56 AMI'm just waiting for his umbrella to blow inside-out......
Lovely photograph, Sam - I can hear and feel the rain! I love the colours, too.
But this makes me want to curl up in front of a fire with a cup of tea and a good book!
Posted by Kathy at November 16, 2005 11:16 AMgreat cap sam!
Posted by shane montgomery at November 16, 2005 11:29 AMGreat strong shot with some fab colours from the traffic lights.
Posted by David H-W at November 16, 2005 11:35 AMVery moody picture. I like it. I do think pictures taken in bad weather always carry with them a mood that sunny day pictures don't. But perhaps it is only because we see / take so few photos in bad weather. Anyway, good work.
Posted by gck at November 16, 2005 11:44 AMis there any permalink for today's photo ?! i just could find and links in the first page... :-? how can i link to today's pic (i want to link the page, not the photo directly) ?!
Posted by Mehdi HE at November 16, 2005 11:48 AMhow often have i been caught in a deluge and wished i could capture the magic? like you have?
Posted by lynn at November 16, 2005 12:36 PMNice night shot. I like the reflection of the lights on the wet all over street.
Regards.
wow, i love this.
Posted by degan at November 16, 2005 01:26 PMI love this photo.
Posted by jillian at November 16, 2005 02:26 PMI love night stuff and the rain just adds a whole new angle. Very well done.
Posted by Jamey at November 16, 2005 03:46 PMLove the effect of the headlights. Great shot and great website.
Posted by Paul at November 16, 2005 03:58 PMI like the headlights hitting the person, but the image is a bit too grainy, probably due to the iso 800.
Posted by John at November 16, 2005 04:19 PMLove it!!!
Posted by mari at November 16, 2005 04:25 PMOf of my favorite photos in a while!
Posted by A.R. at November 16, 2005 04:27 PMwow..gorgeous! even though toronto is already one of the most beautiful cities in the world, you make it seem like the most beautiful on the planet.
this picture is great. the man with the umbrella adds a sort of dark and mysterious feel to the otherwise typical photo.
Posted by stephanie at November 16, 2005 04:59 PMhaha thats awesome dude.

Posted by Pavel at November 16, 2005 05:41 PMMy first comment on your work, I've been viewing for a while. This, for me, is spectacular! Very reminiscent of Ernst Haas' early colour work.
Just fantastic.
Nice pictures!
If you'll have a minute you should look on my blog: http://trilobit.blogspot.com/
Really nice photo Sam. I love rain shots...even better when they're at night. It has a nice dark 'sin city' feel to it and the headlights reflecting off the pavement is really nice!
Posted by Kyra at November 16, 2005 06:44 PMi like this documentry stuff much more. i like these little slices of everyday life in toronto.
Posted by edwin at November 16, 2005 06:50 PMGreat pic Sam! I just came across your bio on optix.ca. Ohhhh, 'The Last Ninja' on C-64, I loved that game! Also was big into Amigas back in the day :). Keep up the stellar work!
Cheers!
Posted by Jason M. at November 16, 2005 06:51 PMjust when you thought rainy days weren't photo days. My kind of shot...nice job.
Posted by roadwarrior58 at November 16, 2005 07:18 PMoooo, very nice! how did you keep your camera dry?!? ;)
Posted by Big A at November 16, 2005 07:22 PMHi Sam! Wow -- the atmosphere of this photograph is amazing. Will the jeep hit the pedestrian? Will lightning hit the post? I can hear the thunder in the background as well. Excellent work Sam, as always! :-)
Posted by José at November 16, 2005 09:26 PMAbsolutely fabulous! Looks like a movie scene! : )
Posted by nuno f at November 16, 2005 09:26 PMAbsolutely astounding. I don't suppose that it'd be possible to hook up a larger version (preferabbly in a widescreen wallpaper... >_>... <_<.... ^_^!)
Love the work and your local Toronto shots make me love this city more and more every day!
Posted by Aidan at November 16, 2005 10:13 PMit's true, there has been a lot of rain here. but you have to admit, the fog makes for some amazing photos :) i love this shot. especially the capture of the shine on the pavement. the umbrella person is quite the right touch.
Posted by nazzie at November 16, 2005 11:02 PMomg, amazing.
Posted by jackie at November 16, 2005 11:39 PMLove the way the lights are playing off the water in the street. The guy with the umbrella just seems to tie all the other elements together. Nice Capture, Sam.
Posted by Rod Thomas at November 17, 2005 12:30 AMThank yoy a lot ! :)
Posted by Mehdi HE at November 17, 2005 12:45 AMI hope you didn't get too wet taking this one!
Posted by Ben at November 17, 2005 02:19 AMI love it!
Very different from your other works....It's as if there's a story behind it...
you're brilliant. Can you please have a book published so I can buy it?
Posted by fragileheart at November 17, 2005 11:26 PMthis is beautiful! how'd u keep your lens dry? oh and can we request for a b/w version?
Posted by neowenyang at November 18, 2005 10:22 AMExtemely cool shot! I really like the action and drama.
Posted by Abe at November 18, 2005 09:23 PMwow, before i read the comments i said to myself, its a mix of sin city(wow what a movie btw!) and max payne, but without the umbrella! does that make me smart? lol, anyway sam awsome shot! i love the rain and the reflections! the 2 lights above (one above the guy and the one above the car) really add some kinda sweet detail! if i didn't know u were so good at this i'd say u stole a frame from max payne and posted it.:-) nevertheless, remains an AWSOME shot!
Posted by Andy at November 18, 2005 11:21 PMI'm crying.
It's just fantastic
This is absolutely stunning, reminds me of Jeff Wall. I've taken the liberty to post a thumnail on my blog (URL below as Typepad doesn't take html) and link back to yours with full references.
Thanks for the inspiration!
