Comments: bike lock and flowers

That wouldn't work here either. If you were lucky they might leave the wheel!

Posted by Jeff A at November 4, 2005 01:57 AM

From what I remember it's always around the first wheel and through the body. Even worse if it's a quick release front wheel.

Nice framing, the pink flowers are very nice.

It's perfectly normal in Finland to lock your bike just to itself - not to anything else. The most common little lock is a bar that goes in the back wheel, so you just can't ride off with it. It's pretty small, so a lot of visitors think the bikes aren't locked up at all.

Having said that, I had 2 bikes stolen in Toronto in 6 years, and 3 in Helsinki in 3 years. Mind you, the Helsinki bikes were a lot more expensive (and were locked to posts, thank you very much).

maybe they want the bike to be nicked, it doesn't look to great. Nicely balanced shot. I like the contrast between the flowers and bike, man made, and nature.

Nice..

My first thought was that the only thing that person who locked the bike could have been more or less sure of finding when they came back was the bike's back wheel.
I like the consistent toned down colour scheme you apply to your England photos. It makes the Old World look even older as compared to your other photographs.

thats a great perspective. you captured both the things beautifully - the cycle and the breathtaking flowers which have a rich color.. awesome one !!

I’m really sorry to do this again but I just can’t help it. Have you seen this?

I wouldn't also let my bike that way in Portugal. I would use here at least 3 heavy chains.

Great composition!

I've seen old houses here in T.O. with these bike-lock rings at the sides of each house, beyond the gate.

Posted by Dixon at November 4, 2005 08:23 AM

Nope, not safer at all - just cheaper due to the students! My bike got nicked the first day of my first term there!

Lovely picture - I particularly like the pink petals on the floor that are there unobtrusively

These pictures are making me miss Oxford soooo much!

Great.. I like the brown colours... Really interesting :-)
Thank you for your work, I enjoy them !

Actually bike theft is rampant in Oxford. The local criminals steal bikes that are improperly locked, load them up in trucks, and sell them to students in Cambridge. And the Cambridge thieves ship the bikes they steal for sale in Oxford!

Check out the bike, I'm surprised she locked it in the first place!!!

Posted by qoJ at November 4, 2005 09:45 AM

actually that looks like its for locking horses.

love the concrete Sam, nice shot as always.

Posted by Shane at November 4, 2005 10:22 AM

Sam, you prick!!!

I knew it was you!!! I parked my bike here for ten minutes, and you put this f'ing lock on it just to get an "artistic" shot! Up yours Sam, up wherever your people cram things!!

WIRE CUTTERS WOULD TAKE CARE OF THAT IN A HEARTBEAT. I LOVE THE COLOR COMBO WITH THE PINK AND THE GREY. GREAT OPPOSITION BETWEEN OBJECTS. I WONDER IF THE OWNER EXPECTS THE BIKE TO BE THERE WHEN THEY COME BACK? SILLY GIRL.

I'm surprized no one has yet to comment on how it looks like you've changed the proportion of this photo. Not sure if you really did...so did you? I know the bike is on a slight angle but it still looks a little weird to me.

"I like the consistent toned down colour scheme you apply to your England photos.", to quote Suzie, who doesn't seem to recognize that the color is natural - old world tired.

And in my 17 years riding bike in Ottawa - winter and summer, till I moved to the country, it was remove the quick release front wheel and lock it to the rear wheel & frame and a SOLID post - like a parking meter. Publicly provided bike racks were usually junk designed by idiots who know nothing of bike problems - like the ones that warp wheels. And if you had a quick release seat you carried it with you. I could only laugh at the naïve folk who even left their helmets on the bike. Yoikes!

Nice flowers. Good errors of human nature shot.

sam, when i finally took my first bicycle shot last week, it reminded me of you and all your great bike shots! love the petals in this shot (the flower ones!)

I never locked my bike in Lebanon. I was shocked to know that I have to when I first moved to Canada. I had a lock similar to the one in this photo (about $25) when I lived in Halifax, NS, but I had to upgrade to a New York lock ($120) when I moved to Toronto. I still don't know how it is here in Montreal.

Posted by Moussa at November 4, 2005 01:26 PM

Nice. If it had been me, I might have cropped it somewhat from the bottom.

Parallel lines! Elliptical wheel...

Wonderful how someone like this is such a worldwide problem. That everywhere people steal bikes from posts/bike stands etc. Sad really.

I like the pink in this shot - nice contrast.

Posted by Phil at November 4, 2005 03:40 PM

Nope, definately not safe. Most people here (Oxford) throw a lock through the back wheel and the frame, so the wheel won't move. I've not had my bike stolen but it has been 'vandalised' - brake lever snapped, lights stolen etc. Any idea which street you took this on?

Posted by James at November 4, 2005 08:42 PM

Wonderful photo! Congrutalations!

Posted by Bion at November 4, 2005 10:16 PM

The pink pedals on the ground as a nice soft touch and color to the shot. Cool composition.
