I think this is a very good composition. The colors, depth, sky, and everything about this foto is pleasing and very fun. Great shot! I had a good time looking through about 100 of your fotos today at work. I am constantly amazed at how talented you are.
Posted by Abe at October 31, 2005 01:07 AMWow! The colours are stunning. Even in a moving vehicle, you take breathtaking photos, Sam!
I adored yesterday's picture as well, of the statue staring down the tourists. Is it by chance that you find these wonderful moments?
Posted by Soloman at October 31, 2005 01:07 AMUnbelievable. It's like something out of a Disney film. Wow. And very Halloween, of course.
Posted by Virginia at October 31, 2005 01:12 AMperfect light.. actually feels like there are huge spot light above!!! great comp either way!!
Posted by justin at October 31, 2005 01:13 AMOMG, It's really shot by camera?
Posted by Draeb at October 31, 2005 01:21 AMWell I'd say you did a pretty good job. The orange on green seems particularly striking in this photo for whatever reason. For a second I was confused by this picture given your affilation with Canada. Do they have pumpkins there or is that just an urban legend?
Posted by Jason at October 31, 2005 01:22 AMBEAUTIFUL! Sam, its like you got out of the car and came up with this amazing shot. Well done, perfect pic for the today. Happy Halloween
Posted by tee at October 31, 2005 01:23 AMAbsolutely gorgeous.
Posted by Peter at October 31, 2005 01:23 AMregardless of the circumstances, I still think it's a fantastic shot. The highlights on the pumpkins really caught my eye.
Posted by e l i s s a at October 31, 2005 01:27 AMWhat it lacks in composition (little or nothing in my opinion) it makes up for in color.
Posted by saulmacneil at October 31, 2005 01:27 AMIf you market this photograph correctly it will make you famous.
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful shot.

Posted by fanny at October 31, 2005 02:23 AMdo you shoot in raw? your colors are amazing. just curious...
Great lighting and a nicely balanced shot - especially for a 'drive by'!
Posted by PhilB at October 31, 2005 02:29 AMYou took that in a moving car? It is great, really captures fall on the East coast. The color is so rich. Props.
Posted by hillsonn at October 31, 2005 02:32 AMman the colors in this are amazing, makes me wish i was up north =D
Posted by david at October 31, 2005 02:38 AMHow wicked is that? Love the colors and the composition couldn't be better! Amazing shot, could be in any magazine around halloween.
Posted by Simon at October 31, 2005 02:42 AMWoW! Look at those colors. The composition couldn't be better. Such tonal richeness everywhere. Definitely one of my favorites from you, Sam. : )
Posted by nuno f at October 31, 2005 02:42 AMThe composition seems perfect as is. This pic put a smile on my face: the colors, the pumpkins, everything. Did you retouch it? It almost has a sweet celestial candy look to it. Love your blog, Sam. I have been visiting almost everyday for a long time. Thanks for inspiring me.
Posted by Katharine at October 31, 2005 02:45 AMBetter composition? You mean - it's bad? It's A W E S O M E! Like a painting or so. Great, great, great. It's all I can say.
Posted by Shyha at October 31, 2005 02:58 AMgreat shot!
Wow, it looks like a painting... the grass is green, the pumpkins are intense, the sky is serene. Really nice work!
Posted by Adam H at October 31, 2005 03:12 AMThis already is a great shot sam... and it is beautiful. You have done a great job to bring out the colours. I guess everyone will appreciate your elaboration on your PS post processing on this one.

wow sam, this is gorgeous man! looks like a dvd cap from a tim burton film. i've said it before and i'll say it again, i just started photography and you make me want to quit.
although if you want to laugh, you can take a look at my futile attempt at carving a dog into a pumpkin www.shanejmontgomery.com
happy halloween from san diego, ca
I love this pic, the colour of the pumpkins looks great against the green field, and then to add to it an interesting sky. Well captured from a car window. Sometimes the best shots are ones you haven't got chance to think about.
Posted by Dan at October 31, 2005 04:33 AMthe image looks like it was painted in oil ... imressive colors
Posted by Arabica at October 31, 2005 04:45 AMThis picture is so fantastic! It looks like in a film or a surrealist dream!!
The composition is very good! Well, i mean, i like it muchly!
Thanks for all of your wonderful pictures (they makes me dreaming).
You probably hear this a lot, but even your "didn't have time to get out of the car to come up with a better composition" shots kill. Just beautiful.
Posted by john at October 31, 2005 05:14 AMi like the composition actually. very nice.
Posted by Josh at October 31, 2005 05:26 AMWow. That totally looks unreal, like it's a painting or a 3-D render or something!
Posted by ToastyKen at October 31, 2005 05:39 AMOnce again you prove to be an amazing photographer!
Posted by Marcello, Italy at October 31, 2005 05:40 AMwow, i love this one. It's amazing.

And colors!!!! wow.
This picture is very beautiful. I am really amazed. I have been looking at you blog for a while, and this is one of the best in a long time.

Happy Halloween.
Posted by Phil at October 31, 2005 06:08 AMNo motion blurs, out of a moving car? Impressive! Heck, the whole photo is sheer impressive with its pinsharp clarity, composition and bright colors.
I see there is lots of pumpkins, people preparing for the Halloween nights? ;)
Posted by GreenChicken at October 31, 2005 06:23 AMNot bad at all for a shot taken from a moving car. The pumpkins just look so inviting. Very appropriate for the day.
Posted by Michael at October 31, 2005 06:37 AMSam, wow, no filter or post processing? This is amazing. I'm blown away by everything about it: from car, light, edge of tree against sky, contrast. All amazing and otherworldly.
Posted by Richard at October 31, 2005 06:38 AMYou didn't yave enough time for a better composition?
And what is that? It looks like a studio shot!
Great shot!
Posted by Ramiro Sabatini at October 31, 2005 07:04 AMLovely
Posted by Susie at October 31, 2005 07:15 AMI like this picture alot. The tones in the sky are very sweet. Then the contrast between the orange of the pumpkins and the green of the grass blend make the sky more subtle. Then the house and the trees along the skyline push the sky into the background. With the trailers too, this creates different areas, which has a nice effect on the eye. I also like the natural zoom effect that occurs as you look further back things get smaller, obviously this occurs with all landscape photographs, but somehow this effect seems to be emphasised in this picture. Perhaps it's the trailers with the pumpkins on. Great Photo!
Posted by TheWakeUpCall at October 31, 2005 07:16 AMThis is a great picture - I'd very be happy to have shot this!. The small flock of birds above the top row of golden clouds adds more detail and interest to what I can almost say is a lucious image.
I normally don't like too much colour saturation, but this looks just as it should.
A+ from me.
I think this a most original halloween shot and i wouldn't change the composition if i could its jus fine as it is.
Posted by keels at October 31, 2005 07:27 AMLove the saturation and colors..

Posted by moritz at October 31, 2005 07:51 AMStill a very nice shot.
Posted by serp at October 31, 2005 07:53 AMJust goes to show you how much I know about composition, but I actually like this shot. I like how the pumpkins go from few to many as the depth of the picture increases.
Did you use some photoshop technique on the finish? It looks very "painting" like. (Good technical term!)
Posted by Andy at October 31, 2005 08:16 AMwow.
Posted by dominika at October 31, 2005 08:23 AMIt's fantastic for a drive-by! The light makes the pumpkins glow.
Posted by linz at October 31, 2005 08:24 AMSam, You're so modest in your description! This is a truly amazing shot, and I just love the composition, and colours. This looks like a painting, and it is very magical and whimsical!
Excellent work!
I N V U
Unbelievable.
Such a utopian scene, like something out of "The Wizard of Oz" or "Fantasia". All that's missing is unicorns flying around above the pumpkins and a big glistening rainbow. Gorgeous.
Can you please turn this into a wallpaper?
Beautiful stuff.
Posted by Molly at October 31, 2005 08:30 AMIf Maxfield Parrish painted pumpkins, it might look like this. Apologies accepted for the greatest pumpkin picture ever.
Posted by lyn at October 31, 2005 08:45 AMThis looks entirely surreal. Your post-processing is perfect in that it doesn't look like you did any! (Except that it looks entirely surreal, like I said!)
Posted by Scott Murdoch at October 31, 2005 08:48 AMno correction needed, the shot looks GREAT!!
Posted by Woofa at October 31, 2005 09:05 AMwhat are you talking about? I think the composition is great. I would personally say this is one of the better photos you've put up in a long time. Not sure if you PS'ed the saturation or but either way it's awesome! ****1/2

Posted by Indrek at October 31, 2005 09:14 AMWow. Just, ...amazing.
Posted by Dennis at October 31, 2005 09:22 AMWow. This is nice. I don't always get super excited about landscapes, but I love this time of year in the North/Northeast and the colors are intoxicating.
A very impressive shot from the car!
Posted by Roxana at October 31, 2005 09:30 AMThis almost looks illustrated... like it's phoney. If that's really for real, unbelieveable. How did you get such crisp colors at sunrise?
Posted by Radman at October 31, 2005 09:31 AMJust like a painting, even if it was just "good timing" the composition is wonderful.
Those pumpkins in the foreground appear to be oozing off the trailier, they are so unctuous.
Posted by Gerald at October 31, 2005 09:33 AMStunning colors. Very nice.
Posted by Kathryn at October 31, 2005 09:42 AMholy shit.
my eyes are happy.
composition is just fine. imbalanced is good too.
Posted by aaron the bold at October 31, 2005 09:43 AMI think the composition is just lovely, even if it was from a moving car. The angle of the cart path draws the eye into the picture and you didn't miss a thing in framing the background (e.g., the house is not cut off by the tree). I also like how the morning light gives it a surreal quality.
Posted by Scott at October 31, 2005 09:44 AMwow, talk about a being in the right place at the right time. your colors here are splendid. i know that morning light produces beautiful shots but this.. this is very nice. did you use a filter as well?

Posted by Curtis at October 31, 2005 09:55 AMAre you kidding? This is a gorgeous shot; looks very surreal. Did you tweak it in Photoshop or something?
Posted by Janet at October 31, 2005 09:57 AMStunning... I love the composition.

Posted by H at October 31, 2005 01:29 PM"...with a better composition" : what a modesty ! I would say that the composition is great.
I know you use a reflex digital camera. Do you think we could get the same contrast with a 'classic' digital camera ? I have a Canon PowerShot A95 and I often have contrast issues with contrasts with sky.

PLEEAAAAAAASSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEE!
(can you tell that I/we like it???)
Posted by Aidy at October 31, 2005 04:08 PM1/100th from a moving car. Better composition? You should get your driver to STOP. What's his problem?
But this image is unbelievable. Moving car. Gimme a break. (Left arm please)
And the sky. You must be cheating, right? (Now how would that work? I've been taking pics 60 years and I don't know.) Funny how one fellow mentions the green and red and overlooks that they are called complimentary colors for a reason. You sure prove it here.
Don't you ever let your fairy Godmother sleep?
Posted by Hugh Petrie at October 31, 2005 04:11 PMwow, incredible. the composition is perfect!
Posted by andrew at October 31, 2005 04:17 PMi don't think the composition is bad either. it is simply amazing! look at the colour of the sky and pumpkins, and the fields.. it's simply amazing! it's shots like this that i want to put up on my wall!
Posted by eclipse-space at October 31, 2005 04:32 PMand it got me thinking.
it's times like this- when you feel the urge to get a great shot but because someone is with you, you can't. don't you find that down the road, your mind will be rushing with ideas of composition and you picture what it'd be like? and that feeling stays with you forever, as you'd always think you had the chance but could not get it as you'd make your friend bored to death.
i very often, while am with non-photolovers face this kind of dilemma.
Posted by eclipse-space at October 31, 2005 04:36 PMi love this picture so much. wow sam, wow.

Your photo's grab details that sometimes most wouldn't even see, until you enjoy the photo. I really enjoyed this photo as did many other who saw it while at our Halloween party. By the way, did everyone see the birds in the sky?
Great shot!
Marc
When I looked at this picture I was wondering whether to find this totally great or due to the exaggererated saturation just (sorry) bullsh*t ... I decided for the bullsh*t-version, because it looks so very unnatural, but since this is a pure photoblog and no photomontage composition I hope you understand, why ... I would never thought that you receive such a high resonance on this.
Anyway - greetings from Bonn, Germany,
Tobias

Wonderful once again.
It looks like a fairytale.
Thought I'd make it 150. To get such great light in the foreground, did you have to do some curves work on the sky, or did it all just work out for you? Great job punching up those pumpkins against the green, it really does it for me. The DoF between the second card of pumpkins and the remaining pumpkin patch is stellar--really sets the focus of the picture (no pun intended). I think the word stellar pretty much sums up this image. Thanks for the wallpaper, too!

Posted by Veronica at November 2, 2005 01:30 PMImpressive. All the more so from a moving vehicle ... well done.
Posted by Aaron Schmidt at November 2, 2005 03:04 PMHell, let's make it an even 174!
I don't know if I can say anything that hasn't already been said. The whole scene looks like something out of a Hollywood Technicolor fantasy. There's whimsy to this shot- rows of pumpkins, the little white house in the back, and a sunset to top it all off. Fall at it's best.
Posted by Maria at November 2, 2005 06:09 PMLively & Nice!
Posted by Roozbeh at November 4, 2005 03:14 AMNot bad for a "drive-by shooting". Congrats.

I love this shot.. it is so vibrant.. It brings back memories of fall, and the chilliness in the air. I have a funny story about it too.
I was walking by my co-workers desk and she had it on her desktop! We both realised that we are big fans of your wonderful site. Small world.. but we both know great photography when we see it! Keep up the great work!

This photo is really amazing. It seems so real it's almost surreal if that makes any sense.
When I see a scene like this in real life I always think to myself that it seems like a matte painting that's been crafted for a movie.
Great work!

astounding shot (:
Beautiful shot! I thought it wasn't a real photograph at first. I thought it was a still shot done up with special effects for a movie or something. Nice. I browsed briefly though your other photos, and they are great. I love "The Stare"...too funny. You have an interesting take on viewing the world that draws me into wanting to look at your photos. Thanks for sharing.

Posted by katty at February 28, 2007 07:12 PMI think this is a great picture. And considering you took it from a car on the fly, it is a GRAND picture. I love the colors, vibrant (orange IS my favorite color so I suppose I am bias). It had just enough brightness from the sky.

Posted by Kerri at October 17, 2010 09:48 AMIs there something up with the site. It's loading up pretty slowly for me. Someone else experiencing this?
Posted by è›™é¡ at November 3, 2010 01:58 AMI can guess a big reason for the popularity of the image as a wallpaper: it's because it looks eerily similar to Dwight Little's creepy, imaginative and scary opening to "Halloween IV".
Here, have a lookie:
