Haha, that's great.
Posted by Lau at October 30, 2005 02:51 AMreally kewl shot!
Posted by Alexander at October 30, 2005 02:55 AMVery funny picture. So good it looks staged. The big round eye of the statue saying "boo", and the tourists "jumping away" reaction.
Posted by gck at October 30, 2005 02:56 AMThe funny thing about this shot is that all the three people on the top deck of the bus are looking right at the face of the staring statue, and the statue guy looks kind of startled and a bit offended at seeing them so close up and staring at him. He is actually looking as if he is telling them off for such not quite elegant behaviour.
Posted by Susie at October 30, 2005 03:39 AMYou also have the eyes for a good photo !!!
I have seen a lot of photos of the Sheldonian but none as good as this
very powerful, a great moment of contact of the unliving with the living.
Posted by Mani Mobini at October 30, 2005 03:51 AMThat expression is classic! Brilliant framing with the passengers.
Posted by Ed { tfk } at October 30, 2005 04:02 AMthats what u call awesome post with the best suitable title :)

That guys hair standing up says it all. its like the statue monster has scared the little puny old humans...

Posted by Hugho at October 30, 2005 07:30 AMI love this Sam. definitely one of my top 10 favourite pictures in daily dose. I wish everyone living in Oxford could see this.
Posted by Kamyar at October 30, 2005 08:01 AMHow do you do it Sam? Just so MANY great images, day after day. Do you employ photo elves?
Posted by Scott Murdoch at October 30, 2005 08:23 AMThis is an amazing photogrphy. Looks like the statue is alive and talking to people as if it was a tourist guide.
What is he looking at? Never saw turists before?
Posted by nuno f at October 30, 2005 08:24 AMThat's quite a humorous shot. The tourists stare and the statue stares back. He almost looks like he's alive.
Posted by Justus at October 30, 2005 08:47 AMThat is amazing.
Posted by Moussa at October 30, 2005 08:49 AMWell. That's not creepy at all. [cough]
He's about to eat those people right up!!!!
Very cool shot. lol.
Posted by diana at October 30, 2005 09:02 AMI love that shot! Its like the statue is mocking the tourists on the bus. I'm sure it didn't originally have those black pupils of course...
Posted by Ryan at October 30, 2005 09:45 AMA glorious scene. Just glorious. The ironic humor is well-appreciated, and the DOF is just perfect. I might suggest a square crop on this one, cutting out the man on the right and the empty space in front of him. This leaves just the statue and the two women, which would really bring their reaction to the foreground.
One of your best "scenes" in a long time, if not your best shot, technically speaking.
Posted by Andy Cogbill at October 30, 2005 09:50 AMThe expression on the statue makes him look as though he is surprised to see the tourists. Excellent shot, caught at just the right moment. - [Chuks]
Posted by EOS Chaos at October 30, 2005 09:52 AMLOL thats awesome.
Posted by sigma at October 30, 2005 10:45 AMlol. Well seen.
Posted by Obelix at October 30, 2005 10:47 AMRyan... of course he had those pupils. It's common for a sculptor to carve out the pupil area to give the eyes dimension in large pieces. Take a look at photos of Mount Rushmore. From afar they look normal but close up the pupils are carved out and a large square area remains in the center to give the Presidents eyes a three dimensional quality. Not everything is Photoshop-ed!
Posted by ECHE at October 30, 2005 01:09 PMHa, that's hilarious. I talk to that guy all the time. He says he freaks out a couple people a day with his stone stare.
Posted by Jason at October 30, 2005 01:26 PMGreat shot. Really makes the head seem alive. Keep the great photos coming. Especially the Oxford ones.

Posted by Phil at October 31, 2005 06:15 AMThat just looks freaky. I love the depth of field here. Just enough to make his face stand out really well. That 70-200 must be a great lens.
