I believe the boats are punts. As for the bridge I can't help.Lovely shot though

Posted by henri at October 27, 2005 02:47 AM

I like the framing - very interesting!

Posted by Abe at October 27, 2005 03:03 AM

I believe they're punting boats....used for punting.

Posted by Ben at October 27, 2005 03:05 AM

Perfect. I really like your style :)

Posted by Dmitry at October 27, 2005 03:08 AM

The boats are called "punts" and one would go "punting". No idea which bridge though!

Posted by Dean at October 27, 2005 03:19 AM

Punts?

Cool pic :)

Posted by Ali at October 27, 2005 03:29 AM

Are they called narrowboats?
Nice shot, I love the framing and perspective.

Posted by Ed { tfk } at October 27, 2005 03:35 AM

They are punts, on either the Cherwell or Isis. Not having been in Oxford recently I'm not sure.

Posted by Aleppo at October 27, 2005 03:47 AM

its just mavellous..
So calm n quite
wish to visit this place, where is it exactly situated?

Posted by Hina at October 27, 2005 03:54 AM

Hi Sam,

Your photo is a view from Magdalen (pronounced Mawdelin) bridge which crosses the river Cherwell, a tributary of the river Thames. The boats are called Punts - and are a 'must do' next time you come to Oxford...

Mark

Posted by Mark K at October 27, 2005 03:56 AM

What nice shapes you have captured in the picture.

Posted by Kay at October 27, 2005 03:57 AM

Lovely picture!!

...and they're called "punts".

Em

Posted by Emily at October 27, 2005 04:01 AM

Sam,

The river is either called the Cherwell or the Thames (Isis in Oxford) depending on where you went punting. Not sure of the name of the bridge but I am sure somebody who knows that view will be able to give the the bridge and river. The boats are called punts - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punt_(boat) .

Great site,

George

Posted by George at October 27, 2005 04:07 AM

the boats are called punts. it looks like it was taken from the magdalen bridge over the river thames.

great shot, as ever!

Posted by mark at October 27, 2005 04:11 AM

These boats are punts, moved using a pole pushed on the river bed, and this photo was taken from Magdalen bridge. I think the river is the Cherwell, on it's way down to meet the Isis, which is what we call our section of the Thames.
Great photo!

Posted by Beth at October 27, 2005 04:13 AM

The bridge I can't help you with as i don't know Oxford all that well. I am however familiar with Cambridge which to all intents is Oxford's twin brother. They are called punts and are ideal for falling out of in a comedy fashion ;)

Posted by piersy at October 27, 2005 04:15 AM

The shot was taken from Magdalen bridge looking downstream. The boats are punts and they are moored along the bank of the botanical gardens. The river is the Cherwell. (I hope I'm right now, I'll have to check on the way home)

Great site, inspiring. I've particularly enjoyed the shots of Oxford, I was very excited to see how you would portray it after you said you were visiting and I definitely haven't been disappointed.

Posted by Tom at October 27, 2005 04:23 AM

hi!
i live in oxford. the bridge on the picture is MAGDALEN BRIDGE in Oxford. i think the boats are called PUNTS and you have to move them using a POLE, this is called PUNTING (one of the main attractions in Oxford).

Posted by neus grandia at October 27, 2005 04:40 AM

Im not from Oxford but visit quite a bit! The boats are called 'punts' .. pushed along by a pole and this looks like the Magdalen Bridge on the River Cherwell but I couldn't be sure

Posted by ruthe at October 27, 2005 04:42 AM

Punts on the River Isis (Oxford can't be common and call it the Thames like everyone else does), taken at Magdalene Bridge (pronounced as in "Maudlin")

Oh, and the bit behind the punts is part of Oxford Botanical Garden. Just in case you knew/cared/had forgotten.

Posted by Lyle at October 27, 2005 04:45 AM

The boats are known as punts. The river is probably the Cherwell.

Posted by Andrew at October 27, 2005 04:46 AM

I'd call them punts, But i'm from Bath not Oxford, so I could be wrong.

Posted by Adam at October 27, 2005 04:50 AM

I think the boats are just called boats, but the activity is called "punting" instead of rowing

Posted by regular viewer at October 27, 2005 04:54 AM

Oh, and the bridge is called Magdalen Bridge i think

Posted by regular viewer at October 27, 2005 04:55 AM

They're called punts - the British of gondollas...

Posted by Gromski at October 27, 2005 04:57 AM

It's a good photo, but I just want to make a point about the size of the image on your site. At 1304 pixles height, it's impossible to take in the entire picture at once. I have to scroll up and down to get a sense of the "totality", but it's just not the same thing - and rather annoying, frankly.

Yes, I could use the resize feature of my browser, but these resizers are crude at best - and ruins the picture at worst.

Just a thought.

Posted by oid at October 27, 2005 05:04 AM

That looks like the Cherwell river from Magdalen bridge. The boats are called punts.

Posted by Dion at October 27, 2005 05:04 AM

Think they are called punts?

Posted by Alastair at October 27, 2005 05:04 AM

The boats are Punts, but i don't know Oxford well enough to know the name of the bridge i'm afraid :)

Posted by Chris at October 27, 2005 05:07 AM

Sorry, don't know the name of the Bridge, but I believe the boats are called Punts, and are propelled with a pole pushing along the riverbed.

Posted by David Patrick at October 27, 2005 05:42 AM

I'm guessing it's the River Thames, Kings Road Bridge. I'm pretty sure the boats are punts.

Posted by quis at October 27, 2005 06:23 AM

What an amazing shot! Oh my.

Posted by markmark at October 27, 2005 06:38 AM

No idea which bridge it is but the boats are punts, propelled by a pole wielded by someone standing on the platform at the end.

Posted by Andy at October 27, 2005 07:05 AM

This is a very nice shot. However, I wish the posts which are framing the scene were in focus. With your dslr, is it possible to get everything like this in focus? With my old Canon Powershot A75, I never had a problem with this. But then when I played around with dslrs in the store, I could never get foreground and background both in focus. Someone help me out here...

Posted by Jesse at October 27, 2005 07:13 AM

They're called punts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punt_%28boat%29).

Can't help with the name of the bridge, but the river is probably the Thames.

Posted by Martin Polley at October 27, 2005 07:17 AM

They're the river Cherwell, Magdalen Bridge (the road over it's called The Plain), and the boats are called punts.

Posted by James at October 27, 2005 07:26 AM

punts=boats
cherwell=river
bridge=?

Posted by dude at October 27, 2005 07:38 AM

Are you thinking of the name "Punt" for the boat?

Posted by Swimboy1 at October 27, 2005 07:41 AM

I seem to recall you go 'punting down the river'..punt boat?

Posted by gem at October 27, 2005 07:50 AM

i believe they are called "Punts" or at least that they are driven by "punters".

Posted by tony at October 27, 2005 07:53 AM

Hi Sam, the boats are called punts.

Excellent photoblog by the way - your photos of Toronto capture the city very well and I'm looking forward to some winter shots when the snow begins to set in.

Posted by Marcus at October 27, 2005 07:58 AM

The river running through Oxford is the Thames (yes, the same one as London) and the boats, to my knowledge, are called punts. I have no idea of the name of the bridge.

Posted by Ray Kinnane at October 27, 2005 08:01 AM

Or maybe the River Cherwell, and the bridge is the famous Magdalen Bridge. But the boats are definitely called punts.

Posted by Ray Kinnane at October 27, 2005 08:08 AM

punts, ahem

Posted by Danothy at October 27, 2005 08:13 AM

They are called punts and its the River Cherwell (though the Thames also flows through Oxford where its known as the River Isis)

Posted by tallus at October 27, 2005 08:18 AM

They look to me like punts on the Cherwell (pronounced Charwell) viewed from Magdalen Bridge.

Nice composition through the ballustrade.

Andrew

Posted by Andrew at October 27, 2005 08:37 AM

As a former Oxford resident, I am really enjoying your pictures. The boats are known as punts - though in fact this refers to the pole used to push you along.
I think the picture was taken from Magdalen Bridge.

Posted by Sarah at October 27, 2005 08:40 AM

The boats are called punts, and when you are out on them you are punting; you use a big stick kind of like the gondaliers in Venice do. From the way the boats are, I would guess it's probably Magdalen Bridge (pronounced Maudelin, not Mag-da-len)

Great picture - takes me back to my university days there!

Posted by Michelle at October 27, 2005 08:46 AM

These boats are 'punts', on which you can 'go punting' (preferably in summer).

Posted by ZF at October 27, 2005 08:54 AM

And I think the river is the Cherwell (pronounced Char-well)

Posted by Michelle at October 27, 2005 08:56 AM

I like the picture. I have been in one of those boats in oxford. But I can't remember what they calll them. It is fun going in one of those boats and use a poal to go forward.

Posted by Philip van Reijn at October 27, 2005 09:19 AM

Nice use of framing, but the colour doesn't seem right, looks bleak or washed out. maybe pure b&w would have worked better...

Posted by Sanjin at October 27, 2005 09:26 AM

They are called "punts." On warmer days, students would stop tourists to ask them if they are interested in "punting." It's rather fun!

I like the Oxford photos. Keep posting them (if you have more)!

Posted by Phil Herriton at October 27, 2005 09:41 AM

I am from England and rah rah I think they are called (cough! cough!) PUNTS
I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Posted by Stephen Wheldon at October 27, 2005 10:09 AM

The boats are called 'punts.' I think the river is called the Cam or something that rhymes with it, because I remember punting on the Cam when I visited Oxford.

Posted by jandoes at October 27, 2005 10:19 AM

Hi there, been coming to DDOI daily for a while now but never commented, really like your work. The boats are called punts

I'm not from Oxford, but I believe it's called "punting": http://www.dailyinfo.co.uk/guide/cartoonist/punting.html

mmm... I likey.

Those would be Gondolas, I believe, but not quite what the Italian ones look like...

maybe a Skiff then?

Posted by BHSG at October 27, 2005 10:55 AM

I believe the boats are called "punts."

Love your work. Every day! Thank you for sharing your gift and your view of the world.

Posted by Sherry at October 27, 2005 11:08 AM

Now this one I really love, because it reminds me of one of my favorite movies, "the Graduate" except that this time, the naughty teacher is made of stone and she looks to be inviting a whole school of boats into her um.... Harbour.
And she'd be all like "hey bouys, (pun) you want to dock in some of this?"
And they'd be all like, "Mrs. Stone thighs, are you trying to seduce me or something?"
And then she's be all, "Yeah, come on and give me a cootchie splinter."

I don't know, I'm just saying, in the age of re-made movies, I'd like to pitch this one. We can get J-Lo to play the teacher, because she's old and made of stone.

Coop.

Posted by keith at October 27, 2005 11:11 AM

They're punts! Lovely picture as always, Sam. Sorry I can't name the bridge...

Posted by Hil at October 27, 2005 11:25 AM

Well, the Boats are Punts, the river is most likely the River Cherwell, based solely on the fact that it looks like the green known as mesopatamia near Magdalen College and Bridge, but its hard to say for certain because there is not enough other information for me. I know its not the Cherwell Boathouse because i have punted there, and its not that open a stretch of river. The motorized Punts in the background also suggest Magdalen. The other place i know you can Rent Punts is at Foley Bridge near the Head of the River Pub on the River Isis (The Thames), but this really doesn't look like that location.

Posted by Stephen G at October 27, 2005 11:37 AM

indeed, they're called punts. That looks like a shot taken from Magdalen (pronounced "Maudlin") bridge over the river Cherwell.

Nice picture btw.

Posted by Mr_joel at October 27, 2005 11:47 AM

That's Magdelene bridge and the boats are punts. On May Day stdents are known to jump off this bridge at sunrise as a choir sings from the tower at Magdelene college across the road..

See http://www.oxford.gov.uk/tourism/historic-sites.cfm/text/1 for view from the punts

Great photos!

Posted by Gareth at October 27, 2005 11:51 AM

great shot, love the earthy tones, i'm slightly bothered by the the blurryness of the columns in the foreground at the top- i love your panoramas but i think this photo would be stronger with some cropping at the top and bottom (my 2cents)

Posted by shaun at October 27, 2005 12:00 PM

Nice picture. Maybe it's just my dirty mind, but doesn't it seem like you're looking at the punts through a.....uh, you know. Especially with the sinuous curves at the bottom.

Posted by Soloman at October 27, 2005 12:05 PM

Nice! I saw this and immediately smiled. I've been in this same spot and took a similar photo (not framed as nicely as yours) about 5 years ago. I'm loving your Oxford photos!

Posted by jonathan Percy at October 27, 2005 01:29 PM

There's something oddly, *ahem*, feminine about this photo.

Posted by Jake at October 27, 2005 02:09 PM

Excellent shot and an unusual view of Oxford. I won't bother repeating what the 60 odd people before me have said about the boats as you've probably worked out what they're called by now! ;-)

Posted by Ghazal at October 28, 2005 01:14 AM

Jandoes, if you punted on the Cam, you were in Cambridge...

(the reason Cambridge is so called is because it used to be a bridge over the Cam. Clever, innit? *grin* )

Posted by Lyle at October 28, 2005 04:34 AM

Sam, this is one of your prettiest images.

Posted by Burlap at October 28, 2005 10:04 AM

Lyle, next you'll be telling me people used to just cross the river at Oxford. *sigh* What's an American girl to believe these days?

Posted by jandoes at October 28, 2005 10:32 AM

This is brilliant. I usually don’t like it when I have to scroll down to see the rest of the picture, but it works so well with this one.

Posted by shirin at October 28, 2005 12:36 PM

Well I'm struggling here bcause of screen size but I think you could have cropped some of the sky out.

Posted by nogger at October 28, 2005 07:15 PM

Is that a couple necking in the center of the image (above the "punts")?

Posted by Kevin at October 28, 2005 11:45 PM

Wow, did you go punting too?

I was there only a few weeks ago. Absolutely incredible. In fact I've got almost the same shot.
