The pseudo-letterbox is interesting, I love the colour of the cabs.

I didn't even notice the black letterbox effect until I read your comment and went back to look for them I was too busy focusing on the great image this has to be one of my favourites! great job Sam.

Nice photo! Not really eye-popping, but I like the shading.

Now it's like a paused DVD :)

The black letterbox it's a good idea. This shot reminds alot a street scene from some movies with the classic yellow cabs. Excellent composition!

Wow, you're probably the first to make NY look like Toronto!!

Cool picture, great place! Was there in the summer!

I don't understand this photo. Is this picture supposed to be a reflection of the two types of battling musslim's? I'm not sure which is which, or who's side you're on, but I like the way you're saying that they are both equal! Good for you Sam! And sorry about hi-jacking your website this weekend.

Must be my British-ness but I can't see the infamous letterbox bars.

I like the shadows on the building, they bring out all the detail around the windows and brickwork. The contrast with the colours of the Taxis works really well. Great street scene. - [Chuks]

i tought it was my limited undestanding of english, but I don't get the "black letterbox" thing either!

anyway. great photo, as usual, I love the yellow of the cabs!

The contrast of grays and yellow makes me feel better.
Thank you.

At first glance, I thought this picture was taken from inside of a car or bus because of the letterbox lines. They make the picture feel kind of confined, much like a big city. Not sure if that's what you were going for, but that's what I got from it.

Before i read the explanation I thought this was taken from under a bridge or EL. I enjoy the richness in the colour of the taxis - nice.

this is great, the colors are awesome.

The letterbox is an interesting effect. This shot reminds me of Holden Caulfield (Catcher in the Rye) comment "why do NY cabs always smell like someone has tossed their cookies" or something similar.

Classic NY shot.

very good colour, grays and yellow

wow, the use of the letterbox is genius. Im going to new york in may for a few casual days so I certainly like to hear more of your opinions etc.

About 25 years ago my husband and I visited New York in the company of an elderly East Indian holy man (visiting the U.S. for medical treatment) and our 19-month old daughter. We stayed for three days in a loft in the garment district. This photo reminds me of that trip! New York is my second favourite city in the world (London, Eng. is first, Toronto is #3, Vancouver #4). The letterbox effect really frames the picture nicely. Love the symmetry of the windows, and the shadows!

I like the color of the building.

Posted by Maran at October 24, 2005 10:39 PM

Wow! This is such amazing framing, I really like that one.

The yellow of the taxi is a bit distracting to the eye. But yes, its hard to get a shot in NYC w/o those darn ugly yellow/orange-ish taxis! The shadows add great detail and feel to the shot.

Canal Street is truly unique, but you almost failed to capture that here? I like your other work much more.

I'm not too sure what you mean by "the aspect ratio is not correct"?

If you mean the aspect ratio is not 3:2 as in a normal 35mm photograph then I understand.

But who's to say that 3:2 is "correct"! In fact, I'm guessing anyone who has done large format photography would argue that 3:2 is not correct.

I love the picture - as usual. On my first visit to NYC I was absolutely astounded by the sheer number of cabs on the streets. I think there's two for each citizen in the city.

Posted by brad at October 25, 2005 09:20 AM

Two things: 1) Ahhhh, New York. and 2) The letterbox is brilliant! I can't believe we haven't seen more of this in photography, but I'm not surprised I saw it from you first. And how interesting we are now so conditioned by letterboxing that we DO associate grand cinematograhy with it, making this look like an impressive clip from a movie simply because of the black lines. Importantly, now is the time to do this as letterboxing will no longer exist in 10 years and this association with have come and gone by then, replaced by everyone having 16:9 TVs. (Finally!)

Wow - great shot! The saturation of the taxis is bold and fun. Just very cool. I love your photography.
