Comments: the ceiling

nice photo, it looks like something that would be from my Art History textbook.

Gorgeous! I'm a huge Harry Potter fanatic XD But I guess I'm not obsessed enough to recognize the ceiling of one of the sets when I see it. Which is a good thing lol

Posted by Doreen at October 7, 2005 02:09 AM

What are the symbols on the ceiling?

Posted by Eric at October 7, 2005 02:13 AM

Wow, BEAUtiful cathedral ceiling. What wonderful texture.

Posted by Erik at October 7, 2005 02:44 AM

Wonderful lines fill this picture! Most amazing and impressive, and something that many of us have seen before.

Now that is what I call Architecture. Don't we Brits do it well! Excellent picture I need a bigger screen to fit that all in.

Fantastic shot!

I thought for a moment this must be a panorama, or a couple of pictures stitched together, but no. Nice work! The colour of the stone is almost unbelievable.

What a shot!!! The composition makes this shot for me. Congratulations on a truly amazing photo.

This is a great photo. Lots of details and striking colors. Too bad they don't make buildings like that anymore. I guess it's too expensive and the skills are perhaps no longer available.

I like the way you cropped the bottom of the image just as the eye began to leave the ceiling. It left me with a bit of restlessness wanting to keep looking at the sharp, beautiful, mysterious and complex details of the ceiling and not wanting to go "down" to grownd level. Divinity indeed.

Great detail well captured. I love how much depth there is to the shot

Posted by Rob at October 7, 2005 07:13 AM

Any idea what the words and symbols in the ceiling are?

Posted by Mark at October 7, 2005 09:04 AM

That's beautiful!! Imagine going to school in a place like that. Boy..

Posted by Giselle at October 7, 2005 09:13 AM

Gorgeous. I love the view extent in this shot.. such range.

Very nice photo, I like this one. I would be interested to know if this is a well lit cathedral or if you used a flash?

Posted by Patrick at October 7, 2005 10:42 AM

this is the best F*****G photo I have ever seen. And I've seen a photo of Jesus!!

Soooooo beautiful, and soooooooo sad that such amazing trade skills have been lost. Thanks for sharing this, Sam!

Stunning. I'm an art student; I thought the same thing as the first poster. I love beautiful architecture.

Posted by Gloria at October 7, 2005 01:46 PM

Truly spectacular! I love the symmetry.

Posted by Phil at October 7, 2005 04:50 PM

oh harry potter. this is gorgeous. your work is brilliant.

Posted by Hilary at October 7, 2005 05:08 PM

What a woodcarvers dream - or nightmare if it's forced labour at low wage - like it was likely close to. But gorgeous. I immediately wonder at the meaning of all the symbols in it.

Quality record shot of an impressive art object.

It also shows how well the Rebel's 17 mm wide setting works along with the light level in such a place. I'm watching all this while I contemplate my move to digital from a 14 year old Olympus IS1 film camera. Big jump. But with Kodak expecting to almost totally drop film in 2 years going digital is imperative.

Wow! This is a beautiful shot!!

Posted by Jodi at October 7, 2005 06:56 PM

it's like a big web of details. nice wide shot.

Just FYI - I've noticed that Fark.com uses your photos quite often for their photoshop contests.

Great shot here, as usual.

"Opposite to the main entrance to the quadrangle is the door leading into the Divinity School, perhaps the most beautiful medieval building in Oxford and the oldest surviving one built separately (1427-83) for a purely university purpose, to house the lectures and disputations of the theology faculty. It has a remarkably fine and elaborate fan-vaulted ceiling, and many of the numerous bosses are carved with the initials or arms of those who contributed to the cost of the building."

Your recent photos are making me nostalgic for my student days at Oxford. Imagine the great privilege of getting to walk through this amazing space every day on the way to use the library! Absolutely spectacular!

Posted by Rahul at October 11, 2005 03:52 AM

Beautiful! I recognized it as the hospital wing right away. Is that sad? ...Yes, yes it is.

Posted by Emmers at October 13, 2005 10:19 PM

Wow. It's amazing. This is why I keep coming back to your site.

Hi Sam,

I am headed for Oxford again in March and this was one of my favorite places. I found a site that allows you to tour it online for those of your fans who want to see more!

I love to see the snowy sites of Toronto...a city I've never been to but now want to visit.
