This is going to be in a book someday.
Posted by Chris at September 8, 2005 12:31 AMooh, I like this one.
Posted by Christine at September 8, 2005 12:45 AMAgain another image that seems two-in-one.. just when I thought the window is beautiful.. the thoughful woman added another dimension to the image. Wonderful Sam! My current post is inspired by one of your images.
Posted by Rahul at September 8, 2005 12:47 AMClassic. Absolutely beautiful. Do they still use cycles that old?
Posted by Zishaan at September 8, 2005 12:47 AMI've noticed this with a lot of your pictures but I don't understand how you can shoot at 17mm and not have any perspective curving (as would be normal with a wide angle shot). Is the image cropped?
Posted by Aaron Schmidt at September 8, 2005 01:27 AMthat is such a sad & meloramatic pic... sam, i hope, u did not push her off the bike.....
Posted by sami jan at September 8, 2005 01:37 AMwe could think beeing in a lovely modern romantic british movie... lovely...
Posted by frédéric at September 8, 2005 01:54 AMNicely framed shot; was she even aware of you?
Posted by Alastair at September 8, 2005 02:14 AMAwesome photo! You caught her just about to crunch down on that apple (or some other fruit...) too! Nice timing :)
Posted by Julie at September 8, 2005 03:21 AMThat one might look good in b/w, to accompany with the mood.
Posted by oliver at September 8, 2005 03:48 AMWhat's with the strike through 'bike'? It is a bike.
Posted by MacDara at September 8, 2005 04:23 AMnice composition !
but i want an apple too !
nice picture.
Did you choose this window on purpose, or did the girl just happen to be sitting by it? The reaosn for asking, is that I think this is the subject for the first photograph.
I can't remember the gentlemans name or even the year, but I am fairly certain that this window, or at the very least, this building was the subject.
I am sure others will be along shortly to confirm/deny/correct my thoughts.
Posted by David Patrick at September 8, 2005 05:34 AMI love pics of these type. Nothing extraordinary in terms of a subject but the whole picture somehow manages to stand out extremely well. Nicely taken.
Posted by funky at September 8, 2005 05:51 AMAhh Sam, this pic sums up oxford and england perfectly! so pleased to see shots i can relate to I love your shots of toronto but there is nothing like seeing a familar face.
Posted by keels at September 8, 2005 06:01 AMAha! I knew this was Oxford as soon as i saw it. If you're still around, drop me an email. Have you been to the Natural History/Pitt Rivers museums?
Posted by Adam Hopkinson at September 8, 2005 06:24 AMBeautiful !
I mean the girl :)
Looks great Sam, I never thought you could make it. I remember you trying to take this shot without looking through the view finder or LCD so the girl wouldn’t notice.
Posted by Kamyar at September 8, 2005 07:31 AMthis is a yummy picture. I really like the tonal feel here, and the slight reflection on the upper part of the window. I like the cycle as well, esp. the spring loaded Hannibal Lector seat.
Posted by JasOn at September 8, 2005 08:23 AMwhat a pretty photo! the girl and the bike MAKE the shot.

Like an ascent castle with a long-waiting Princess, not an apple but a Prince.
So romantic...
Great picture. Love the composition.
Posted by ashleaf at September 8, 2005 09:00 AMThis is the coolest shot I have seen in awhile. Everything works together very nicely.
Posted by Jeff A at September 8, 2005 09:03 AMReally cool shot. Is she posing? If not... it's even better!
Posted by Brandon at September 8, 2005 09:18 AMMakes me hungry
Posted by sergent popup at September 8, 2005 09:19 AMGreat textures and colours. Love the composition.
Posted by Sean Galbraith at September 8, 2005 09:20 AMI love the colors in this! Such rich yellows in the stone offset by the white in the windoes. Everything looks wonderful.
Posted by radman at September 8, 2005 09:46 AM"Sad & melo(d)ramatic"?
If anything, she looks very carefree. Excellent colour.. I love the yellow around the windows.
Posted by Karl at September 8, 2005 10:48 AMPerfect.
Beautiful as it came up on my screen and even better as I scrolled down.
Posted by bnovak at September 8, 2005 11:00 AMI can't help but worry that she's going to walk around the rest of the day with dirt smudges on the back of her nice white skirt......
Lovely, lovely shot, Sam! Makes me want to go there!
Posted by Kathy at September 8, 2005 11:03 AMLovely composition. I especially liked how the page opened just to the window and I had to scroll down to see the woman and her bike. The shot went from being a very nice window scene to being a wonderful shot of life at oxford. I agree with the first commenter that it should be included in a book!
Posted by Ariela at September 8, 2005 11:21 AMThey just don't make women this cool in North America.
And if you ARE a woman as cool as this one, come to http://www.skatersinc.com/message_board.htm and look for hugh newman. But you'd have to prove it before i'd believe you.
This pic rocks! GO SAM!!! And I agree with the first post. You should publish a coffee table book. That would be awesome!
Posted by Leslie at September 8, 2005 12:15 PMNice Composition....Love photos that involve people.
Posted by Ghazal at September 8, 2005 12:24 PMWonderful composition. This is one of those photographs I'd like to have hanging on the wall to look at every day - it does not stop communicating things to me, plenty of ideas begging to be elaborated upon.
Posted by Susie at September 8, 2005 12:32 PM0n a scale of 1 to 5 (with 1 tops), a 1A.
I like this a lot.
I often work in this library. It's a great place to study. ...and to answer one of the above comment, we ride every kind of bicycle* we can find in Oxford, from the very old to the very new: they're all here!
*we mostly call them bikes or bicycles here--seldom cycles.
Posted by Aeron at September 8, 2005 03:55 PMIt gives me faith in the continuance of the really important things in life that you would entitle this one, "The Apple". Great shot, Sam!
Fantastic shot, really great. She looks so deep in thought.
Posted by Brian at September 8, 2005 04:52 PMwow, I really really like this photo. I like how she's wearing a white dress that stands out against the wall and how you've got so much height covered in this.
Posted by lisa at September 8, 2005 07:01 PMThis girl could've been me twenty years ago. Other times, other places....
Lovely picture.
Kat
Wow, simple but very nice!
Posted by SpydeRR at September 8, 2005 07:38 PMTerific shot, sums up the pace, style, and atmosphere of Oxford wonderfully.
and Zishaan; this is a pretty modern bike by our standards!
To me, the beauty of this shot is the composition. Simple and complex at the same time....
Posted by regularjoe at September 8, 2005 09:29 PMThe only thing that puts me off the shot and its hardly a critisism is the bike does not look like hers.
I mean its an old junker and she is sitting there is a nice white dress.
Posted by rw at September 8, 2005 10:06 PMWow. This photo makes me want to paint again... it's been a while and I probably won't have time to paint anytime soon... but may I?
Posted by fragileheart at September 8, 2005 10:14 PMbicyle? do you mean bicycle? haha gotcha!!
Beautiful shot - very classic. The gold and the girl - lovely.
Posted by Abe at September 9, 2005 03:12 PMWhat an awesome image. Bequtiful windows. There seems to be a deep story in this. Raggedy bike (men's model I might add). She's very polished and wearing a skirt. Don't think she went to the library on it but they fit together perfectly somehow. ;) nice!
Posted by mari at September 9, 2005 10:26 PMwow, this is gorgeous.
Posted by Dragan at September 10, 2005 11:58 AMSorry, I did not read the 50 comments prior, but WHY did you not crop this at the stones above the bike? Just my opinion, but the dramatic focus is lost at the bottom of allllllllll the building space IMHO.
call me curious.....
Posted by Erik at September 12, 2005 02:02 AMSuch a perfect capture of life in Oxford. This how I'll always remember it - bikes, students & fantastic old buildings everywhere. When I was there I got a great pic bike propped up against a fence right next to a sign saying "please do not leave your bikes against these railings".
Posted by Kate at September 13, 2005 04:08 AMThis is one of your best, I think! Really beautiful!
Posted by Vlad at September 13, 2005 08:18 AMi was just browsing google image search for "apple" pictures, and this is beautiful. im excited at the building, the tones, colour, i love this photograph.
Posted by J.S. at January 23, 2006 01:35 PMYour best shot in a while, I think. Fantastic textures and colours! Great capture.
