Comments: the bridge

so beautiful... love the soft yellows/oranges light from the sunset.
It's cool that's you're posting a series of photos from the don valley track. sort of tells a story about the excursion...

that is an awesome shot like the dark hues with the light sunlit bridge.

Nice subdued colours. The yellows are very nice.

Lovely warm light on this, presumably taken later afternoon? That big sky backdrop the bridge well. It's great to see some other parts of the world - even if it's just their road bridges :o)

Toronto's Bloor Viaduct shot from Don River Recreational Trail, shurely?!

Great shot Sam, the bridge is beautiful. I like the contrast between the classic style columns and the metal bits (Specially the ones sticking out on the top).

Hi Sam great shot. From visiting your website over the last few months, you have made we desperately want to visit Toronto. I Live in Oxford and am looking forward to seeing your take on the place - how long will it be until we get to see some?

First off, good photo. Second, since I routinely bike across that bridge, I cannot believe how any connection to the city gone. The bridge could be anywhere in the countryside. It freaked me out a bit, but in a good way.

Looking forward to your uk photos!

Ah, the Bloor Viaduct... That's the best angle I've ever seen of the suicide barrier!

FYI: this used to be the 2nd most popular suicide 'jump-off' bridge in North America (Golden Gate is #1).

Why? It was there? Not too interesting.

No doubt you'll soon return to a more artistic state, but thanks for the memory as follows.

I knew a young woman in 1968 who, under the influence of LSD, thought she could fly off this bridge - long before they put that anti suicide rail along it. She survived the fall and they took her to what is now called 1001 Queen street - then 999 Queen and an impressive 100 year old stone building with chains on the walls for the people when they had no drugs to help them calm down.

I've always believed that if you think you can fly - with or without a device - it's a good idea to try and fly up before jumping off something. Birds of course have been born to fly and don't need this intelectual thought to save themselves. Still, I have seen birds crash on their first trys.

Why? It was there? Not too interesting.

Maybe not to you, Hugh, but some people like viaducts. Like me, for instance.

Nice shot. I pass by this trail a whole bunch of times. I usually start from Victoria Park (Taylor Creek Park) and go down by Woodbine beach.

Posted by Ayan at September 4, 2005 10:09 PM

not too interesting? HUGELY interesting, especially the perspective of a bridge many of us use routinely.

fantastic how the image can remind someone of a bridge out in the countryside, but in reality, two huge parts of the big city on either side of this bridge. well shot and great perspective. cheers.

Interesting...all those crosses in a row on the popular suicide bridge.

Spectacular! I love the colors and everything. I'm sure a tutorial on this shot's post processing would make you world famous. (At least for a portion of the world.)

beautiful colors highlighted by the sun in places and shadows in others

I love this bridge - it is graceful and lyrical, and you have taken it at an angle which I've never seen before. Thanks for a lovely photo, Sam!

Posted by Kathy at September 5, 2005 12:46 AM

Stunning contrast ... and you always have such dramatic skies.

Posted by Aaron Schmidt at September 5, 2005 01:15 AM

This is great - the light is beautiful.

i love the warm tones of this shot. wonderful!

Posted by potty at September 5, 2005 05:18 PM

This is a great picture. I also often ride under the bridge, but as usual with your pictures, I've never seen it quite like this. No one has mentioned 'In the Skin of the Lion', yet, a Michael Ondaatje novel about building the bridge. There are also a few historic pictures of the constrution, here: http://ve.torontopubliclibrary.ca/TPM/bloor_viaduct_july_18_1917.html And as if THAT wasn't enough, here's my photoblog entry of a subway crossing the bridge: http://www.seemsartless.com/index.php?pic=303

It's funny, Sam, I've read so many complaints about how ugly the protective barrier is from the bridge, but your view here makes it beautiful.

Posted by The Sheepcat at September 5, 2005 11:46 PM

Lovely shot! I love the contrast and the quality of the light.

Posted by John Bloor at September 12, 2005 02:30 AM

Great perception... for me its the angle that really makes the shot. Wonderful colors =)

Posted by SmileTO at September 13, 2005 01:28 PM

Lovely, rich amber highlights and just the right lighting make this a very pleasant foto. The contrast from the structure to the sky really enhances the whole foto as well.

Just as an insught into how many took their lives by jumping from this bridge, a friend of mine was travelling across in his car with a recently made friend, and commented that it was the number one suicide spot in Canada, to which the other person replied, "my Dad did it here."

Great picture Sam, gotta love golden hour...
