Comments: soldiers silhouette

With the contrast that high, they almost look real ... like as if you're in prison, behind the walls.

Wow, that's stunning -- it looks more like a CGI drawing.

Keep up the amazing work! I've been following this site for a few days, and I've been blown away by the calibre of photography here. As a fellow Torontonian, I salute you!

nice contrast :)

I like your photograph! I get much power from your photograph.
Thank you.

Ahhhhh... I love the blue.

Simple yet striking...

i thought the one on the left might be a photographer!

Posted by Joe[y] at August 26, 2005 05:34 AM

hah, the guy on the left looks like he's taking a photo!

Posted by payam at August 26, 2005 06:39 AM

Nice shot! The colors really catch the eye, especially with the sun behind one of hte soliders.

Very unique,
I like the silhoutte effect here.

That picture is pretty cool. Nice to see you taking pictures of my City. For those who are wondering, I'm pretty sure those statues are between major's hill park and the National art gallery. Could be wrong though.

One gripe though. It only bugs me a lot. Stop compressing the jpgs so much. that's where those wonderful circles in the sky come from. It really bothers me. Not sure how everyone else feels about it.

Posted by PhotoPhile at August 26, 2005 08:35 AM

wow, it looks like a computer-drawing. cool and sharp.

loads of batteries for thy cam of brilliance.

Ottawa's a great city for public monuments and open space. You've captured an eerie angle here, like the viewer is hidden in an undiscovered trench. I like it, but better hold that sneeze...

Posted by Mary at August 26, 2005 08:47 AM

The leftmost soldier is excellent. I assume you used some sort of polariser...

Posted by Ioannis at August 26, 2005 09:10 AM

Nice composition and colour. Great sun location.

Posted by Sean Galbraith at August 26, 2005 09:23 AM

I thought the first was a photographer standing among the statues holding a camera. The sunlight behind him sees like a flash.

Posted by Kevin at August 26, 2005 09:30 AM

wow, great shot. i love the shillouette against the bright blue of the sky. they look so life-like. i especially like the hint of sunlight behind the figure on the left. good work.

I think your viewers may be interested to know that this is the monument dedicated to the "Peace Keepers". It is believed to be the first, and possibly the only one in the world dedicated to "Peace", rather than a specific war. Canadian -- eh!

Posted by Henry at August 26, 2005 10:06 AM

Just to be clear - they're not "soldiers" they're "peacekeepers". It's the national "peacekeeping" monument.

Posted by brad at August 26, 2005 11:41 AM

Your simplest and best for several days!

Posted by Ry at August 26, 2005 11:52 AM

Ah, yes! The peace memorial at Sussex and St. Patrick next to the art Gallery.

Effective shot!

And I say they are soldiers who work as peacekeepers. Dang, things get complicated.

PhotoPhile thinks you compress images too much. He may have hi speed - I don't in rural Canada. They are still damn slow to load.

Rather touristy don't ya think?

Posted by Skauce at August 26, 2005 03:21 PM

this blue color!

Posted by venetia at August 26, 2005 03:49 PM

incredible shot. It almost looks fabricated and completely set up.

Posted by lisa at August 26, 2005 05:50 PM

Lovely contrast, the sky looks oh so manipulated with curves :)

For the person who mentioned rings in the sky and compressing JPG, its due to your screen, change it from 16bit to 32bit in screen properties, this is especially noticable on macs.

Special note to Sam: Why dont you upload your photos on flickr? Your audience will be much greater than it already is, and Im sure as hell they will be featured almost daily in the new interesigness section which automatically picks up the photos that are creating most interest!!

You can contiune this blog and link the image to the flickr page.. just a thought.

PhotoPhile -- I don't see circles in the sky. Perhaps your system's color settings are too low, maybe only 256 colors? (Unless an updated pic has been posted since your comment.)

Posted by Karl at August 26, 2005 07:22 PM

I think it's a clever effect with the sun being photographed behind the peacekeeper holding a machine gun at his hip. It makes it look like the flash from a fired gun..obviously the intended effect.

Nice pic !. I took this one back in April when I visited Ottawa on a Canada tour.. Scarily similar.... http://www.philson.com/images/ocuk/canada/soldier-sml.jpg

This is an awesome photo of the peacekeeping memorial! ironically, it's also across the street from where I work :) Love the site, keep it up.

Great contrast shot! The deep blue sky and the statues opposite the sun are very imposing. The light colored wall at varying angles adds a good dimesnion and symmetry to the whole foto.
