That's the little hole at the side of the World's Biggest Bookstore building isn't it?! Haha, great picture :)

Posted by rz at August 3, 2005 01:37 AM

Great shot! I think someone was simply teleporting using the light above and didn't put in enough power.

Posted by Ed at August 3, 2005 01:40 AM

you should have seen what the note entailed!

very nice, this one is a treasure.

Posted by Faramarz at August 3, 2005 01:59 AM

someone just bought a new pair of shoes, and left a note offering his old ones to anyone who may come across them.

Posted by Jesse at August 3, 2005 02:05 AM

"Ok, so I walked a mile in your shoes, I still don't get it."

Posted by Travis at August 3, 2005 02:10 AM

Excellent heading - very fitting, pardon the pun.

Posted by Rob at August 3, 2005 02:23 AM

write your own story?

The note in the shoes says:

"Dear John,

all you do all day is look at that damn photoblog and Fark. I painted the entire house BRIGHT RED and you didn't notice! I shaved my head! I removed all the door handles outside!

What more can I do? The kids hate the rain here in Toronto. Your mother-in-law is a mouth-breather at best. Your shoes are almost always outside anyways due to the stench. Your father is in bar fights all the time, and your youngest son thinks the Kilted Yaksmen's song is ACTUALLY the Canadian National Anthem. Your eldest just said his first complete sentence, "Goonie goo goo."

Add to this the fact that you only know ONE joke, and, yes, it's STUPID. I don't give a damn if there may still be one or two people who don't know that fish say "Dam!" when they hit a concrete wall... that joke was your one redeeming quality, and it got old somewhere in the first 10 years of our marriage.

We're moving to Tampa with my mother, and I'm taking the dog, too. You can keep the wonderful 13" television set we bought in 1983.

your one-legged wife,

Eileen."

... or at least that's what I can read at full zoom. Am I wrong?

Posted by Joshua P!! at August 3, 2005 02:37 AM

You've shot this before. October 21, 2003, "Dark Corner". It looks like it anways. Great pic. i wonder who left their shoes there.

Posted by Drew at August 3, 2005 02:57 AM

Very interesting find.. and whatever it is those shoes are sitting in, sure looks dirty. Looks like the corner everyone stops to pee in on the way home from the bar.

I've blogged one of your pictures and a link to A Daily Dose of Imagery at http://londonadpics.blogspot.com/

Is that a stage door? Having thought about the reasoning behind leaving a pair of shoes with attached note- im still none the wiser!

Cool! Your Toronto is such a moody awesome place!

Posted by wiwiana at August 3, 2005 03:34 AM

he is vanished and his shoes are shining!

Posted by mehdi karami at August 3, 2005 03:38 AM

It would be about man, who suddenly disappeared. Only things he left were that shoes and a farewell letter...
Itīs just a suggestion..

Posted by Jirka at August 3, 2005 03:49 AM

if this were in India, there would be a simple explanation.. the person would have left his footwear outside the house before entering through the door..

Posted by Rahul at August 3, 2005 03:52 AM

A man holding a piece of paper and got beamed up by the light... leaving only his shoes and the piece of paper. Wonder what's written on it... some magic words. Interesting shot :o)

Posted by Bart at August 3, 2005 04:35 AM

I'm guessing someone left the shoes outside for someone to pick up. Amazing shot with the overwelming red... good job, keep em coming!

Posted by Frank Fonteijn at August 3, 2005 05:15 AM

Looked like the man was beamed up into the light.

Posted by Laura at August 3, 2005 05:24 AM

This is a pair of teleport shoes and the piece of paper contains instructions on how to use them. What it says is that what you need to do is step into the shoes, position yourself directly below the lamp and say very clearly where you want to be teleported to, like Cheltenham Bandlands, for instance... and there you go!

Posted by Susie at August 3, 2005 06:14 AM

nice shot - i thaught about a story about this shot something around 20 minutes but no ideas belonged my brain!

Posted by hossein daraei at August 3, 2005 08:18 AM

Wow, what a colour. It's nice to see an otherwise dreary wall painted a warm vibrant colour.
My story for this shot?
I think somebody had a lot to drink one night, and their friends took his shoes off for a joke, and there they lay, just waiting for a homeless person to pick up.

Posted by JasOn at August 3, 2005 08:28 AM

I think the door on the right must lead to one of those Japanese resteraunts where you have to take your shoes off (Shame the poor fella's on his own though)love the colour.

Posted by Paul hullock at August 3, 2005 08:44 AM

Great shot. I particularly like how the like creates the light on the back wall. Very nice frame.

Posted by Dan at August 3, 2005 08:46 AM

Underage wizard tried to disapparate, he wasn't experienced and didnt have the license so he didnt manage to do it entirely well, resulting in the shoes remaining back.

I need to lay off the HP books for a while..

Posted by Hitesh Sawlani at August 3, 2005 08:46 AM

Clarke Kent left in such a hurry he seems to have forgotten his shoes!!

Interesting shot once again!

Posted by keels at August 3, 2005 08:46 AM

I love the titles you pick for your images. Nicely done.

Posted by Darren at August 3, 2005 08:57 AM

Those are much better shoes than the ones I'm wearing. Do you know the size, and are they still there?
It is not unusual, Sam, for you to spot the unusual. You seem to see more, on the way past, than most would see after close scrutiny.
Thanks for sharing.

Posted by alice at August 3, 2005 09:51 AM

honey I shrunk the kids... this time, they're stuck inside this smelly shoe.

Posted by tee at August 3, 2005 10:05 AM

What really happened is:

The spider from the spider web above the light spun the man right out of his shoes and into his web and ate him.

Interesting photo.

nice... shoes :P

Posted by ps at August 3, 2005 05:14 PM

There appears to be moisture emanating from the corner where the shoes are left. My guess is that a business man, picked up the check from an expensive date. Assuming he was entering the restroom, exited through that red door on the right, urinated to death, and then evaporated.

Posted by Kevin at August 3, 2005 05:23 PM

I believe that this place is used frequently by people who need a place to crash. I think that someone noticed that and decided to "gift" someone with a pair of shoes that they no longer needed. Great idea! We just don't know how materially rich we are in North America, yet so poor in other ways.

Posted by wilkiepup at August 3, 2005 06:09 PM

what a great pic. you lucky s.o.b!:P

Posted by kikko77 at August 3, 2005 06:28 PM

The paper reads: "If you are reading this and accidently leaned against the wall, you might have noticed that there is wet paint. Sorry, please take these shoes as a consolidation"

Posted by Damian at August 3, 2005 08:41 PM

A tall man in a black Armani steps out the back door of the nightclub and pauses in the dim light. As he reaches up to brush back the sweat that hangs on his brow, his Rolex flashes and catches his eye. He smells faintly of cigars and too much liquor. A pair of juveniles passing through the alley leave him with no more than a look of contempt and a leer. Stepping out of the shadow of the door, the man steps into the light as he leans against the far wall. His face is a pasty gray and he looks almost colorless, like pages to an old used book. His mien is a sharp contrast to the seeming efficiency and elegant style that his clothing throws upon the eye.

I turned my head, as a cacaphony of shouts arose further down the street. A group of dirty children, fighting over a coin. When I looked back, the man was gone. Carefully placed in a corner of the entranceway, was a pair of expensive black shoes and a note..

"There comes a time when a man grows tired of success and its glass and metal prison walls. He yearns to court danger, once more - if only to rediscover his heart. This is my invitation for you, to walk a mile in these shoes. And maybe somehow, rediscover a little bit of what it means to be a man."

Posted by alice at August 3, 2005 11:01 PM

For this guy, the outdoors is his indoors and his indoors are his outdoors. The door to the right leads outdoors. He just took off his shoes not to make the streets dirty.

That parchment? Oh, thats just the mini printer built in the side of those shoes.

This is a photograph taken inside the Orange Roof Motel. The shoes have been left by the door in order that they may be shined for the guest in the unnumbered room on the right. It's a small motel with only one room and, therefore, no number is required on the door. The small piece of paper on top of the shoes is a note from the proprietor telling the guest to shine his own shoes and, while he is at it, to please turn off the light.

Posted by Reza at August 6, 2005 02:01 AM

story? oh a story i will weave....muhahah
ok some thirteen years ago there was an invasion of intruders. they would walk right into your home and steal everything down to the doorknob and carpet. then they would paint the walls red. the people got smart and painted the outside of their home red and took the door knobs off. this confused the intruders for a while. then thirteen years later they got tricky. went to the neighbors house and stole the shoes(they hadnt taken the same precautions)then they put them outside the door and left a note saying that there was a million dollars stowed away in the sole of the shoe. and hid inside. then all they have to do is wait...and oh what a wait they endure. what they forget is that the shoe isnt even the right size!
