Comments: barn and the clouds

I really like these shots from out in the country. I grew up on a farm in southern ontario, and these pictures remind me of that. You should take a trip out to the country again once the leaves start to change. You won't be disappointed!

This would make a perfect wallpaper, but then again almost all of your photos would!

Sam, you am da man,

I think you should move to Cheltenham. It just seems right somehow. ;)

Sorry you can't come to Britain yet, British Airways are a bunch of wankers (the managment anyway) no-one here likes them, there was nearly a riot at Heathrow last night, (or the British equivalent to one anyway). we are so looking forward to seeing your UK stuff.
The shot of the barn is great, do you use filters on the camera, or put the effects in later in photoshop?

Sorry to hear you've been caught up in the BA strike. Its all that has been on the news here over the last 24 hrs.

Posted by Neil UK at August 12, 2005 04:30 AM

Hard luck! I heard that on the radio this morning. Some flights from Ireland are delayed too. Hope you can go on holiday soon!
PS. love the photos!

How frustrating! Wonderful photo though! Amazing clouds as always.

Posted by Ed at August 12, 2005 04:53 AM

Just to clarify:

What actually happened was that the catering company contracted by British Airways decided to sack most of their staff without warning, because they were striking for better conditions. That would have been an inconvenience for BA (at worst you'd have to make do without dinner on your flight) but the situation was made impossible when BA's ground staff (the baggage handlers, at least) decided to strike in solidarity with the catering workers.

Now, the problem with that, besides the fact that this subsequent strike action is what grounded the fleet, is that BA had nothing to do with the actions of the catering firm - they were just contractors after all - so the strike action by groundstaff is technically illegal (and if it was sponsored by their union, then their union is being particularly irresponsible).

I am really amazed at the level a single 2D image could generate the effect of a 3D scene. The clouds are really popping out of the monitor. How do you capture such puffy clouds? Are you using filters of some sort? Or you just focus on shadows in the post processing?

I have seen such puffy clouds in many of your photos, but this photo stands out as the trees (forest?) in the distance and the barn add much more depth to the scene.

just found your blog, and it's neat.

great majestic clouds and good placement of the barn. it has a soothing effect on me.

Well in actual fact your flight was cancelled due to unofficial industrial action in support of other unofficial industrial action by staff from the catering company for BA. So it's actually slighty more bizarre than you thought.

As for the photo that's a lovely shot, in particular the clouds which are gorgeous.

Posted by Steve at August 12, 2005 07:01 AM

Sorry you got up in all the industrial action hope you get compensated somehow, but at least you managed to get a great shot on your way.

Posted by McAWilliams at August 12, 2005 07:08 AM

Airplane stuff can be frustrating, especially if it doesn't work out. Good luck with the flight.

As for the shot, I love barns, so I like this shot. Nice clouds.

nice shot. but i think it was better that more surface of ground was in the frame. as i think.

Posted by hossein daraei at August 12, 2005 08:09 AM

I really like the look and feel of this picture. No busy-ness. Just calm. And the red really sticks out!

Posted by Jeremy at August 12, 2005 08:15 AM

What beautiful clouds and intense blue sky! The barn and the grounds around it are classic.

The catering staff have all been sacked after refusing to sign revised contracts of employment that reduced pay, holiday entitlements and other benefits. BA were flying as usual but passengers were not being fed. The baggage handlers, who are members of the same union, have come out on strike in support of the sacked catering staff and it is this that has caused the cancellation of flights. A colleague's father works for the catering company and they suck big time.

This one's awesome..
Has it been edited in terms of colors?

Posted by Prasoon at August 12, 2005 09:03 AM

Ah I was reading about it in The Metro (free newspaper). Good luck getting to Heathrow!

Posted by Ioannis at August 12, 2005 09:04 AM

Oh, it's so sorry that you couldn't go away... I hope you have a new flight soon !

Posted by Tousiger at August 12, 2005 09:05 AM

Great shot. I love the way the clouds seem to fold away into the distance.

Sorry to hear you've been caught up in the BA dispute. It's amazing how an industrial incident can cause this much disruption.

Posted by Anthony at August 12, 2005 09:10 AM

Good luck! I've been hearing about how many people are stranded on the radio. May be a while before British Airways catches up.

Posted by Paul at August 12, 2005 09:28 AM

That really bites that you got caught up in the craziness, and so crazy that it has nothing to do with BA but yet they have to cancel all flights all day! Really bad luck.

I hope you can get off the ground quickly and enjoy the photographic opportunities in England, bon voyage! (eventually)

Nice colors, Nice clouding, Nice place. Nice photo as always Sam!!! :)

Sorry to hear about your trip being canceled. I was looking forward to seeing the pictures from it. Well hopefully y'all will be able to go soon. This is an awesome photo of a barn. The clouds couldn't have been better for the scene. Take care Sam.

AWESOME shot!

Posted by bnovak at August 12, 2005 11:05 AM

like so many others, i'm dyin to know the workflow on this shot, or if the sky and cloud clarity is due to a polarizer or other filter. clouds and sky in my shots, even with digital post-processing, never quite sing like these.

Posted by Darrin at August 12, 2005 11:10 AM

I looked around but couldn't find it....what kind of camera are you using for your photos? Are you doing any PS editing to them?

Posted by Max at August 12, 2005 11:12 AM

I read about the strike in Heathrow airport. Sad to hear!

a tad cliched but marvellous shot nevertheless!
love the gorgeous skies!

It's actually a plot by the UK Photoblogger's Union to keep you out of the country so you don't show us all up with your photos of the UK. :-)

Hope it all gets sorted soon for you.

Posted by nogger at August 12, 2005 02:40 PM

Reminds me of the scenery as we head north camping. Pie stands and all. Thank you for capturing these unique moments.

Posted by tina at August 12, 2005 03:46 PM

Sam, you always take such wonderful pictures. I really love your perception of cloudscapes. They are beautiful and by looking at your photos I am reminded to look upward more. I visit your site everyday and I look forward to seeing you photos.

I was surprised today to hear about the cancelled flights (which you were supposed to be on) on the news today. I thought it was funny because I already knew about it because of your post today.

Anyway, thank you for your wonderful site. I hope you have a great vacation (whenever it starts!). And keep up the good work. You inspire us all with your wonderful eye for interesting and captivating photos.

Take care,
Vanessa (Portland, OR)

I love your clouds... and I love barns as well...

Posted by kikko77 at August 14, 2005 04:31 PM

You are coming to Britain. That is very cool. Have you considered meeting some of the photographers here?

Posted by jessy at August 16, 2005 05:22 AM

This is one of my favorite shots of yours. The barn, surrounded by a wide-open field and expansive sky, and the rich, warm colors are wonderful. This is a classic shot and very nicely done! I enjoy it very much.

I love clouds.
Vast, light, wayward.

They are our common dreams.
Our common roof. So commonly unique.

Clouds are our beautiful border of this world.
