Comments: flying girl

That's really cool. Even we envy you, Sam!

Posted by ajlb at July 27, 2005 01:46 AM

Amazing.

Posted by Chris at July 27, 2005 01:51 AM

Cropping the photo about one foot below her head gives it a very abstract view like as if she's part of the Monster billboard. (Simulated through scrolling.)

Posted by Aaron at July 27, 2005 02:16 AM

this has to be one of my favourite images so far. a really intriguing surreal feel to it, especially with the crowd having their backs to us- just like a Magritte painting! Did you digitally straighten the girl vetically?
cheers.

Posted by rhys baker at July 27, 2005 02:25 AM

Wow. Where is she jumping from?

Posted by simple at July 27, 2005 02:37 AM

Amazing capture, Sam. The flying girl is so sharp, aside from the motion in the head and feet, she almost seems to be floating there. And the less than impressed guy directly opposite you in the crowd is priceless!

Posted by emma at July 27, 2005 02:42 AM

What a great picture! Very good timing!

Posted by frans at July 27, 2005 02:43 AM

AWESOME! Super timing and composition. I love it!!

Posted by owen at July 27, 2005 03:00 AM

I like the stark sky and the position of the sign on the right, and of course the girl who appears to be diving to her death. Great colors! Cool shot!

Posted by Abe at July 27, 2005 03:13 AM

Wow. The clarity and color of this photo takes my breath away.

Posted by Katherine at July 27, 2005 03:25 AM

Great shut! would you tell me about the two women wearing scarf?

See my photoblog.

Posted by Kamira at July 27, 2005 03:25 AM

Shame about the greyness of the sky, but I still think its a great shot.

Enough perspective to see the onlookers and of cause a girl upside down.

Posted by Rob at July 27, 2005 03:27 AM

great capture

Posted by mikhail at July 27, 2005 03:28 AM

Awesome composition- the billboard acts as an apt caption too. From all my favourites im enjoying your work the most at the moment- Chromasia's fame seems to have gone to his head...

Seeing snaps like this frustrates me that im stuck in the office all day and have to consign my photgraphy to the weekend!

Great capture with fantastic clarity. (I am hopeful that there is a trampoline at her feet... well, below her. ;)

Posted by Dan at July 27, 2005 08:20 AM

Man! Now i'm totally kicking myself in the butt!! I walked by (probably in front of your camera) when you were taking this shot. I thought you looked familar and I wish I would of said hi and told you how much I love your site. Keep up the great work!

Posted by Jesse at July 27, 2005 08:20 AM

sam,

in addition to capturing an interesting action shot of that woman, you've managed to capture the worst feature of the current worst building in toronto!
congrats!

Posted by bud at July 27, 2005 08:24 AM

I love what you've done to the colors in this shot, and it's amazing that you were able to capture her perfectly perpindicular to the ground.

Posted by Justin Gaynor at July 27, 2005 08:25 AM

Sam, you've done it again. One of your best, yet. Truly.

Posted by myla at July 27, 2005 08:42 AM

once again, amaaaaaaaazzing subject matter...it isn't as good as some of ur previous work though. I bet it's harder to photograph an object falling than a bike moving almost at a constant speed. I wonder if you are developing a technique for photographing a free fall as well.
great picture anywayz...Greaaaaaaaat blog too...

Posted by Siavash at July 27, 2005 08:59 AM

Awesome!

Posted by Steve at July 27, 2005 09:36 AM

Wow.. that's something you don't see everyday. Excellently timed shot. Perfectly framed.

Posted by Sean Galbraith at July 27, 2005 09:43 AM

Sam, what a great catch (as usual) - love the symmetry and 'lines'. rita

Posted by Rita at July 27, 2005 09:53 AM

Her experience is captured and communicated by your experience, and posted; becomes our experience.
Thanks for passing all that along.

When the picture first came on my screen I saw the billboard then as I scrolled down I saw the woman. It was unexpected and startled me! So cool.

Posted by me at July 27, 2005 10:04 AM

alright, best "human" shot I've ever seen from you... great.

Posted by moritz at July 27, 2005 10:39 AM

I know it's already been said and that you tend to prefer some context in your images, but a crop from the top of the 'be so successful' ad to just above the tops of the marquees would look amazing. Oh and I'm guessing the desaturated sky is deliberate from the other warm tones here? I don't often like the way my digital camera renders sky blue - it's way too cold-looking.

Nice work, one of your most interesting shots in a while.

Posted by James at July 27, 2005 10:48 AM

What a top shot.

I was just scrolling through a few blogs while drinking a cup of tea and when I came across this I nearly choked on it! Entertaining and clever. I love it.

Great photo. Nice legs.

Posted by Filter at July 27, 2005 11:46 AM

Wow, how many tries, if any, did it take to get this perfect shot?

Posted by soul clinic at July 27, 2005 11:53 AM

Hi Sam,
For the last few weeks I've been dropping by every day to see your latest post. I find I'm spending more and more time looking at each image. Yesterday's and today's images really made me stop and look closely. You do wonderful work and I just wanted to say thanks for sharing it.
All the best,

super girllllll

funky shot. love how u have captured the momentum!

Posted by hiba at July 27, 2005 01:53 PM

She so hot!

very nice capture, I love how long and vertical the exposure is. you tend to always maintain the 750px width to accommodate your layout.

-Faramarz

p.s. drop by Mississauga sometime and revitalize our city!

Posted by Faramarz at July 27, 2005 02:28 PM

Impressionante mesmo! Very beautiful this photo.

Posted by Jana at July 27, 2005 02:32 PM

Outstanding shot. Full of detail and points of interest. I've recently found your blog Sam and visit every morning. Best photoblog on the net. Each shot is an essay on Toronto life.

Posted by Rob at July 27, 2005 02:53 PM

Great shot... Great timing. You took the photo when she was in the best possible position with the background. Very, very nice!

Posted by Jen at July 27, 2005 03:08 PM

i wonder how many shots were taken. did u hold down the shutter and hope for the best? or did u wait?

Posted by PAOLO at July 27, 2005 03:51 PM

That's an awesome pick. Is she on a trampoline or something?!

Posted by Brandon Erik Bertelsen at July 27, 2005 04:11 PM

Following your blog - maybe a year - has it been so long? Anyways generally execellent -used a few for screensavers- this one despite the positive comments one of your weakest sorry to be a distractor

Posted by faraari at July 27, 2005 07:22 PM

one of the best action shots i have ever seen.

Posted by PTAD at July 27, 2005 08:46 PM

Holy crap! she's really high!

nice pic tho

Posted by Hugh at July 27, 2005 09:22 PM

Hey Sam! nice shot! i was wondering though if you took multiple shots at once such as the 15 frames in about a second that some cameras have...they are soo usefull in situations like these! i like how even at 1/150 of a seconds, she moves her hair fast enough to blur! pretty hard to do that!
Anyway, hope u update the shot!
Keep up the good job..

p.s. im especially impressed with the framing! that monster ad is so well placed...did you have it all planned out from before?:)

Posted by Andy at July 27, 2005 09:23 PM

A free lady jumps in the sky. Two veiled lady look at her, probably with big sorrow. Sorrow , either for the jumper who goes to hell since she is semi-bare ! , or for their past life, abandoned with strict religeous believes, which forbids them to live life to the fullest, wear what they want.

I'm sure those two lady are the only in that crowd who watch, without a smile on their faces.

Posted by Arash at July 27, 2005 10:50 PM

As someone who has an insanely difficult time with action shots, I really enjoy this! Is it a trampoline?

I especially enjoy "...even you envy you". That kind of makes the photo for me.

Posted by G at July 27, 2005 11:19 PM

Cool photo, I like the left-top row one the best. She has an interesting pose...

Posted by Tomiboy at July 28, 2005 01:28 AM

Sam,

you are the BEST! Superb shot!

Posted by JD at July 28, 2005 01:49 AM

Hi Sam,

I think lately the style of your shots has significantly changed. This one is an example of what style I expected in the past - capturing unique moments that combine feeling, urban life and some scenic angles.

I really like this shot. I would have also gone perhaps for the top left if it indeed looks like she is stepping on this building.

Well done, please post more pictures like this! :-)

Posted by Ioannis at July 28, 2005 04:37 AM

how do you get the sky effect? Does it come straight from camera or some PS manipulation?

Posted by afromar at July 28, 2005 05:55 AM

If you had chosen the top middle shot you would not have shown us the most beautiful part of the shot that you posted, namely, the backs of the two women in front of you. The light on them and the stillness of them are in such wonderful contrast to the brightness and action of the rest of the photograph.

I check your blog every day, and am inspired by many of your pictures. There are some shots that I think, "I could have taken that", and this is validating for me as a photographer. Then there are the others that I could not have taken, not yet having maybe the skill or the vision or the equipment. This photograph is in the latter group, and is one of the best ever. You absolutely chose the right one to post.

Posted by Ned at July 28, 2005 09:50 AM

the shot you posted alone is great, but i like the collage even better!

Posted by doris at July 28, 2005 11:12 AM

I prefer the middle row, center shot more. She's in a more poignant, free-floating position, as if she's experiencing total freedom of being in mid-air. It has a very decisive-moment-esque quality to it; timeless, eloquent. Her form is more organic. The one you chose I think looks a little more awkward because her knees are bent and the pose a bit more rigid, closed.

Posted by Kar Wai Ng at July 28, 2005 01:54 PM

Sam, I was so looking forward to seeing your take on the gymnasts performance. These images are as breathtaking as the performance! Well done as always. I have also written a little piece about meeting you the other day on my blog about meeting you. :-) cheers.

Posted by Azad at July 28, 2005 03:47 PM

i think you should have picked the middle top one.

Posted by Ross at July 28, 2005 03:55 PM

I'd go for the top middle one, the one you considered posting. There is a supernatural feel about it as the girl seems to be suspended in the air by some supernatural powers, she seems perfectly motionless, no effort physical shows, she seems concentrated as if focusing her mind powers at keeping herself in that position.

Posted by Susie at July 28, 2005 04:15 PM

The sky effect? It was achieved by living in a hot, humid area with a billion cars and factories pumping pollution into the air 24 hours a day!

Posted by Bob at July 28, 2005 04:39 PM

Excellent shot Sam.

Posted by djn1 at July 28, 2005 07:45 PM

The middle shot on the top row is great! I think I might like it a little better, taking nothing away from the one you posted, which I like a lot. I can see why you were torn. All of them would have worked - they are all good. Really nice shots, Sam!

Posted by Abe at July 28, 2005 08:34 PM

Hey Sam,
Love the shot! As with others, I think you should post that middle top row shot, full size as a future daily dose. It rocks! It looks like she is levitating, like Supergirl! You should really post it, man. The feedback will be great, rest assured!

What's not to like about watching a girl bouncing up and down?

Posted by Kevin at August 1, 2005 12:10 PM

I love the one you chose - I also love the very last one you took, which shows her almost horizontal in the air.... good on you....
