Comments: sunlit station

This photo fascinates me with its sense of space, the interesting diagonals formed by shadows, the sky windows and gridded ceiling additing textural detail, the sense of openess with windows on every side, the burnished gold reflection at the base of the pipllar, the sense of peaceful leisure and relaxation of the people -- the golden light, golden reflections all make it seem as though we're looking at a scene from another planet, a peaceful one.

نور ... نور ... و باز هم نور ...

The sloped overhang adds something very appealing to this shot; the symmetrical lines to the right and the rectangle slots in the overhang create a pleasing sense of depth. Really nice perspective choice.

The amber-rich lighting is absolutely great as well. All of the people in the photo, especially the woman in the foreground, produces an additional and very interesting dimension. This is a really nice photo, Sam!

that is a lot of sun in the station! amazing shot!

Posted by aashish at July 26, 2005 04:14 AM

Looks great, I love the way the sunlight turned out through the windows.

I love the geometrical chaos in this shot- lines cris-crossing every which way. Then add the warm glow of the evening sun and it combines for a fascinating composition.

Brillant photo... Loved the sun rays effect... :)

Sam, I am speechless about this photograph.
This is absolutely outstanding!! Also quite contrast from yesterdays' badlands shot!
Unique natural landscape versus architectural heaven.
Thanks for offering the wallpaper yesterday, it now serves as an awesome background.

i really can't understand how you can have so much great colors...............
thanks for that.
you are so much talented

i like the warmth of the light streaming through. usually i only see this type of light when in a forest or something...great that you were able to see it in a man made structure.

Posted by christine at July 26, 2005 09:33 AM

Great shot! The angles of the structure, the shadows, and the reflections from the metal pillars all have different directions. That adds a great complexity to this picture. There's just so much going on - angles, colours, shades... really interesting.

Sam, as always, a terrific shot. Love the sun, the warmth and openness of this shot. Always enjoy starting my day at your site. Thanks.
Rita .... happy to have received the map to badlands which is only a short hop from Mississauga!

Excellent picture, the shadows and light are fantastic, one thing though what on earth is the man in the yellow top doing???

Hey, I spend an hour every day at this station on my work to York university! Sam, you were standing by the 196 bus stop when you took this picture, right?

I'd never paused to think about Downsview Station aesthetically until now. A very Romantic photograph, with the supply sun rays compensating for the harsh steely greys and its uncompromising angularity.

Another interesting shot to take in this station would be to stand above or near the escalators located near the the woman at the centre of the shot (with a bare arm, facing left). Those escalators are LONG and the ride down them allows you to enjoy looking up at a purple, green, blue, and magenta mosaic design.

Lovely work, Sam, as always.

The light in this photo is fantastic and I love the blur on the lower half of the columns.

Posted by twb at July 26, 2005 12:52 PM

Gorgeous station. I have never been to Downsview station before and I can't believe it looks this nice. Looks just like an airport at sunset! Very breathtaking.

Posted by Peggy at July 26, 2005 01:59 PM

Great colors. However, I think the software you used to correct the line distortion did not work well in this instance. Although the lines are straight, the who image does not look natural. Maybe the slanted ceiling adds to this un-natural effect. Really a hard space to photograph.

Posted by Sasan at July 26, 2005 02:37 PM

Really like this shot, mostly 'cause I know how hard it is to take and not get overcome by the light/ dark contrasts.

The light angles and guy in the yellow shirt really help to make it one of my favs too.

I always thought downsview sux...but no wonder..one more place that u left better looking

Posted by siavash at July 26, 2005 06:40 PM

toronto never looked this good in real life. i've been in this station many, many times and i never remember it looking like this. it's usually cold, dark and dingy. sam, you light up my life!!thank you.

Like everyone else, I really enjoy this photograph. The colors and symmetry make it a standout!

Thank you for sharing.

I absolutely love this pic! How did it come out this way? Did u use a tripod?

Posted by Erika at July 26, 2005 07:45 PM

Yet another great shot. Many thanks for sharing all this with the world, Sam.

Maybe it's just my imagination, but doesn't it look like the 2 people in the photo on the far left are walking about 6 inches above the floor?

Posted by Paul at July 26, 2005 08:23 PM

sam - yet again, the composition, the lighting, the human element, the everything - it all takes my breath away. your photolog is one of very few i look forward to viewing daily.

You really should sell this to the TTC! I used to work there, and they make batches of postcards every so often.
This would make an amazing postcard.

Most of the people who are now looking at this gorgeous photograph of Downsview Station probably don't know how COLD that station gets in the winter. There's no heating system, and waiting there for your bus for half an hour on a freezing January night can make you wish you had already turned to ice so you wouldn't have to feel your fingers get frostbitten.

Great photo, Sam.

hey sam, long time viewer first time making a comment. i just wanted to let you know that i'm feelin' your work. i really like this one. the lines and shadows are cool for some reason it brings to mind the last few minutes of garden state.
