Wonderful shot, I love the nails in the wood and the flakes of paint.
Great!
That is some great detail and DOF. The red almost looks like blood on the thumbnail. Very nice!
Posted by jamie at July 21, 2005 03:40 AMI like the red highlights, the deep shadows, the texture from rusty staples. I've noticed now a trend (three is a trend) involving telephone pole portriats. I've probably noticed it, because one is mine.

This is a detail of a contemporary north american totem.
We don't see these here in Portugal. So this kind of detail makes me home sick of Toronto again. U definetely have an attentive eye for these.
You never stop to amaze me. This picture is so pleasing to the eye, which is kind of surprising considering that what it shows is in fact some of the trash people spread so generously all around themselves.
I like the effect of sharp sunshine adding dark shadows to the staples, to bits of paper, and painting dark lines on the wood, and also how it bleaches out the already worn-looking wood. I think it's this light that makes the image look so much like a painting, rendered in oil paints perhaps or pastels.
Nice shot. The shadows and lighting provided a good effect.

Posted by sami jan at July 21, 2005 06:46 AMWow looks like its bleeding with the patches of red paint and the stapels look like stiches bizarre but excellent capture.
Posted by keels at July 21, 2005 06:50 AMAwesome pic but can I have the details of whats in the shot?
What was stapled there earler?
Great colours an composition! I find there's almost a sense of life to those little staples, clinging to the post. Great photo.
Posted by Dan at July 21, 2005 08:14 AMI didn't know what this was at first, I was frightened! Very nice shot, your camera (and of course, your skills) are quite amazing.
Posted by diana at July 21, 2005 08:48 AMWhat a beautiful picture... so sad. Almost looks like the wood is bleeding...

Posted by sanjin at July 21, 2005 10:02 AMI really like this- raw and powerful with the scratches of colour. Good spot. JHO
Posted by JHO at July 21, 2005 10:06 AMwow - this invoked an immediate reaction of awe in me. Such intensity in a regular day item - makes me want to look closer at my surroundings.
I just came across this site awhile ago, and I think I'll bookmark it. You have real talent.
Posted by Lindsey at July 21, 2005 10:52 AMWhat an amazing shot....very elemental and very Toronto :D

Posted by Abe at July 21, 2005 03:02 PMWow! I love the way those staples age. Great shot.
Posted by Edwinek at July 21, 2005 03:42 PMAmazing to see ddoi on BBC!
Posted by Ayan at July 21, 2005 04:44 PMDo you know how many times I walk by these poles every day in Toronto? I always thought all the staples and crap left on them made them ugly.
You have made it art.
Posted by hoser at July 21, 2005 05:45 PMI really like the subject but the post processing is too much "in your face" for my taste. It looks almost as if the original was a little blurred and you had to over sharpen it. It looks like you also boosted the saturation and levels a notch too much... Just my personal opinion though, and looks like I'm the only one to feel that way so you should probably ignore my comment :)
I really like you pblog, hope you won't take this the wrong way...
Posted by m d at July 21, 2005 06:21 PMHoooooooweee; what a mess.
But super image. Astute of you to notice. Does not speak well of advertising of this kind, but it is an important media for many.
I do think the postering is overdone in the trying to be the one which is noticed - but what else is there to do in the struggle for the almighty dollar.
Posted by Hugh Petrie at July 21, 2005 08:51 PMcool shot! nice play of red paper, brown wood, and the staples in all directions :) nice one!
