Comments: pigeons and the girl

What a great shot, lucky you went past her when you did!

Posted by Ed at July 13, 2005 01:20 AM

Beautiful. As always.

Posted by xta at July 13, 2005 02:02 AM

It's remarkable that you were able to get this shot without you (or her) disturbing the pigeons and causing them to fly away. Nice job, Sam!

u have the chinese girl's number or mail address?ha...jokey..dun worry,man..i like ur pictures...those r all fantasitic, and bring me wonderful memoey of when i was in Toronto...Thanks

Beautiful picture.

Posted by Ioannis at July 13, 2005 04:11 AM

Cute!!

The photo taken from the rear seems more interesting.. the two pigeons seems to be wondering why the girl is not interested in them.

Quite a sight ;-)

Posted by Rahul at July 13, 2005 04:26 AM

hehe, I love the way the 2 pigeons in the first shot look like they're having a conversation and the girl & the pigeon on the right are both looking away!

I wonder if she sits there every day, she seems very comfortable with them around her.

Posted by Neil at July 13, 2005 04:56 AM

what a great shot! i love how they're simply co-existing. and Han Li is so cute.

Posted by puc at July 13, 2005 05:05 AM

That's absolutely great. To tell you the truth, I prefer the first one- however both are just candid shots.

Posted by Eric at July 13, 2005 05:10 AM

that is so f**king cool!

Posted by Noah at July 13, 2005 05:35 AM

Charming! What wonderful interspecies relations!
Seeing that nobody's "feathers are ruffled", it must have been a very pleasant encounter.
You seem to have caught an especially tranquil moment even in the midst of the daily urban hassles and the current heat wave. It must take more than just the eye to spot the subject.
Thanks,Sam, and thanks to Han Li too, for sharing this welcome bit of peace and quiet.

Chinese gal,chinese taste.

These made me smile thankyou for brightening what otherwise is a shitty day!!

Posted by keels at July 13, 2005 07:12 AM

My photography teacher in highschool told us not to take pictures of pigeons while we would shoot in Toronto. He called them, "rats with wings". Nonetheless, this is a very interesting composition.

Posted by Damian at July 13, 2005 07:42 AM

Very cute picture.
Good eye, Sam.

Posted by efarr at July 13, 2005 08:36 AM

Good composition. It's erie how none of the birds are on the empty bench. Instead, they flock to Han Li. Is this because they sense a friendly personality or because locals usually offer bread crumbs? One pigeon is looking like, "What's in the cup?" This reminds me of Alfred Hitchock's, The Birds.

Posted by Kevin at July 13, 2005 09:42 AM

The birds are evidently awaiting to be given some bread crumbs.
I prefer the first photo in which the human figure looks a bit like another bird siting on top of the bench alongside the other birds. And that tiny sparrow looks very cute indeed in such company.

Posted by Susie at July 13, 2005 09:51 AM

Excellent image. The girl in the second image is looking a little self-concious, would have been a better shot if she was a little more comfortable with her being photographed.

Posted by Navin Harish at July 13, 2005 10:06 AM

this is excellent shot. i prefer the first image, but both are great. good idea for making it b/w.

Posted by sanjin at July 13, 2005 10:37 AM

What a great series of shots ... you continue to inspire me to pick up my camera! Are you a good multi-tasker ... that is, can you walk around T.O. with someone else, carry on a conversation and still be aware of "opportunties" to shoot?

Posted by Ian at July 13, 2005 10:46 AM

The first one is gorgeous.

Posted by A. at July 13, 2005 11:21 AM

Obviously the pigeons have an addiction to Tim Horton's coffee.

Hilarious find, Sam! Thanks for sharing!

Posted by Kathy at July 13, 2005 11:53 AM

Wow! In both shots, there is an amazing harmony between the shape of the girl's head and the figures of the pigeons, especially in the shot from behind. Well-done Javanrouh, well-done!

Posted by SlicesOfLife at July 13, 2005 11:54 AM

This is just a lil too good. Awesome shot buddy..

Posted by Prasoon at July 13, 2005 12:06 PM

i always feel odd asking people to take their picture

Posted by jesse at July 13, 2005 01:55 PM

I quite like the bottom photo. Great capture of a fleeting moment :-)

Posted by laurent at July 13, 2005 02:58 PM

the photos taken by chance are the best ones... love the top one!

Posted by kc at July 13, 2005 08:07 PM

The lady must have good vibes for the pigeons to sit so close.

The first and anonymous shot from the rear is maybe a touch better for that mystery, but it's neat, for the record, to have the front shot. I note that the sparrow left before you got to the front or was it the front you shot first and the sparrow joined in after you went to the rear?

Fun stuff, Sam.

nice shot, and nice of you to ask her to take the picture. i still find it difficult to do that. as for some constructive criticism, i think that the two pictures together would have worked better if she were looking into the frame in the first shot as she is in the second shot. it would have given it the appearance that the photo was taken at the same moment in time even though it wasn't.

Posted by Pramesh at July 13, 2005 11:23 PM

Absolutelly gorgeous! I found you album some weeks ago, while I was surfing the net. I just got it love with your work... It's terrific!

Posted by Jime at July 13, 2005 11:40 PM

It's like a point-blanc game. I would shoot the dark one first, and then the other 2. If the girl still hangs around, sorry.

Posted by Boreo at July 14, 2005 12:12 AM

Sam, you never cease to amaze.

Posted by J.R.Benjamin at July 14, 2005 01:24 AM

Pigeons are foul.

Posted by qoJ at July 14, 2005 07:42 AM

Ah, a terrific pair of photos. I like the top one a bit more with the birds and her head lined up along the back of the bench. Great stuff!

Posted by Darren at July 14, 2005 12:43 PM

I was hoping to see Han Li's comment up here. Oh well ...

Posted by James at July 14, 2005 04:45 PM

Wow... there are some people out there who just oogle over your photos - even your bad ones.

This one is pretty boring, must say. Your landscape shots are fantastic, but this is just a girl and a few birds. Could have been taken with a quickshot from Mac's by a 8 year old.

Posted by Adam at July 15, 2005 01:06 PM

she reminds me of snow white, with all the animals around her.

Posted by rosh at July 15, 2005 09:26 PM

I can see why you stopped. It's a very cute and humorous scene. Great job!

Posted by Alicia at July 17, 2005 09:46 AM

hmm, did u happen to ask the pigeons for their permission too? if not, you're being a specie-ist!!

just messing around .. great photos !!

Posted by ken at July 18, 2005 10:51 AM

Absolutely brilliant work Sam. Brilliant. ;)

Posted by myla at July 19, 2005 08:21 AM

I love this picture and it was a very good idea to make it b/w.

You're very talented...Love the rest of your photos as well. Keep up the good work!

Posted by Sam L. at July 27, 2005 06:18 PM

Great picture. I like the one on the top. It looks like the pigeons are talking to her. The baby ones look like they are hanging out with mom and dad. The top one should be in a gallary.

Posted by Rhonda at July 30, 2005 12:04 PM

I love both of these... but especially the first because it adds a special bit of mystery to the girl.

Posted by adelina at August 9, 2005 12:53 AM

What a wonderful image! It feels weird when birds start flying around you when you're sitting on a bench. But this...

Posted by Phil at October 26, 2005 06:43 PM

She reminds me of Margaret Yang in the movie Rushmore... a quiet young girl full of wisdom.

I love it!

Posted by Madame at December 29, 2005 04:24 AM

real good photograph, the beauty of the photo is the way the girl is posing lookin at the peigons. u r really lucky to have a look at that.

Posted by prateek pandit at December 29, 2005 07:23 AM

For me the top picture has a wonderful sense of timeless mystery, but the second picture breaks the spell -- it's almost like peeking backstage to see how it was done, and wishing you hadn't. The figures are still great but here we see the tote bag and the coffee and the grubby ground and the street and the peeling bench. But I have to say that amazingly, the birds have kept their sense of perfect spacing -- even with different birds!!! Maybe if I hadn't seen the first shot I would have liked the second one better....
