Comments: ghost on bench

Nice. Very weel done. Even without the trick, is a superb photo.

Freaky! Great Photo!

Posted by moe at July 11, 2005 04:20 AM

wow, this picture gave me the chills.

Posted by traci at July 11, 2005 04:26 AM

This is among my favorites of your night shots. I am drawn in by the walkway toward the light in the background. Fantastic ghost effect! Black and white is a wonderful choice here, and the sharpness is absolutely perfect! Great shot!

Posted by Abe at July 11, 2005 06:00 AM

Fantastic! A great self-portrait. I am almost glad that there were no sugary moonlit scenes to capture as the photo you came back with from your night excursion is more interesting thanks to that, in my opinion. And the night is mostly black ... the way it should be on our planet :)

Posted by Susie at July 11, 2005 06:15 AM

wow this looks great! my eyes went directly to you, on the bench. how long did you set the exposure?

Posted by hanneke at July 11, 2005 06:51 AM

oooo... spoooooky... we've got Cindy Sherman's ghost over here! Nice pic, as usual. i love that we can see a few stars in the sky. so ominous.

Posted by Maria at July 11, 2005 06:54 AM

That is awesome. Some day, try to do something like this twice in one shot and make yourself a double. As always, excellent photo, Sam.

Posted by Nate at July 11, 2005 06:55 AM

Very creative shot. Reminds me vaguely of a shot I did years and years ago of a friend walking towards me past a well lit phone booth. But your shot is MUCH better!

Posted by Bob at July 11, 2005 07:30 AM

I love it! So surreal.

Neato!

Really interesting way to do a self portrait!

Posted by Heather at July 11, 2005 08:45 AM

lol......nice shot!!!!....eastern beaches, eh?

Posted by DavidFF at July 11, 2005 09:09 AM

That's ingenious! I wouldn't have thought of using a flash in that way. I like the starkness of the black and white, especially in an area that's usually so full of life.

Posted by talk talk talk at July 11, 2005 09:12 AM

Nice shot! I love night shots with some personality to them. That has to be one of the neatest looking ghosts in a night shot I've seen. You should print off a ghost tour brochure and try a little of that based on this picture! Good job!

Posted by sanjin at July 11, 2005 10:00 AM

Sam, you never stop amazing me. You carried the flash with you and fired it in your lap, wow, what an idea. I have got to play around with stuff like this, thanks for the great photo and idea.

sam, just keep on experimenting... experimentation leads to great shots like these. an absolute corking piece of work. my shot of the day.

Posted by canon-craig at July 11, 2005 12:19 PM

Symbolically intersting... like life: altogether fleeting ..nice...lack of colour more interesting. Wish I could see some of the details more closely.

I'll gush like all the rest. love this site. It's addictive!

Posted by irene at July 11, 2005 12:29 PM

Aw Sam! This is so original! You definitely have the gift of painting with light! Thanks for the new ideas!
José ;-p

Ha! Great shot. I wonderful way to really put something interesting in this scene. I like the way you lined the park bench and yourself up with the other 2 lights in the photo.

nice shot. im ALWAYS visiting your site. good work.

Posted by Paolo at July 11, 2005 06:14 PM

Interesting how it leaves you sort of legless.

So you use a photo strobe flash and not a flashlight as I thought earlier. I've seen some who used an ordingary flashlight to paint areas.

Posted by Hugh Petrie at July 11, 2005 07:12 PM

Excellent photo!

Sam,

I love your photography, it is such an inspiration. I am a young photogrpaher that stumbled upon your site over the internet and I have looked through just about all of your pictures. I love your photography, please keep up the great work.

Thank you and God bless,

J.R.Benjamin

Brilliant! Using flash in selective areas on a long exposure is the sort of thing I've always thought about doing, but never got round to it. Well done!

Posted by Neil at July 12, 2005 07:41 AM

Just one word -- 'BRILLIANT'

Posted by Jasmeet at July 12, 2005 10:08 AM

Great shot Sam! I would have never thought to do that.

After lurking for months this is my first comment post. I just want to say thanks for always sharing how you did it. Your blog and forum are very helpful and inspiring.

Posted by Michelle at July 12, 2005 12:59 PM

ACK!!! That photo is so incredibly cool!!! (I know that sounds juvenile, but that's the first thing that came to my head. I love it!!)

Posted by Brenda at July 12, 2005 02:06 PM

kudos! only if i were half as creative!

Posted by wen yang at July 14, 2005 09:18 AM

That is one of the coolest shots I have seen in awhile. To be honest I didn't even notice you sitting on the bench until I took the time to really appreciate the photography. Nicely done!!

Posted by skevbo at July 14, 2005 01:56 PM

he he :))

now that is a good way to act as a ghost!

Posted by aashish at July 15, 2005 08:53 AM

i was there that night too...playing with the balancing rocks on the beach...the rocks make a good subject...but the bugs were plenty you're right.

Posted by sookie at July 15, 2005 09:45 PM

The word "creepy" cannot be over-used in regard to this image. The 6th anniversary of JFK, Jr.'s death just passed 3 days ago and I swear as I chanced upon this, I thought you'd super-imposed a shot of his father on that bench.

That truly did "creep" me out ... until I read your description.

Then I knelt down on the ground and praised your existence! Sharing your creativity with us like this makes our entire existence worthwhile. Thanks, Sam.

Posted by Donna Lee Michas at July 19, 2005 10:07 PM

Very nice shot! But one question: Why knock Photoshop "trickery" when using flash trickery? Or, for that matter, lens, focus, paper, chemical, etc. trickery? A great image is a great image. The rest is technique and, maybe, style. If Photoshop is trickery, so is black and white.

Posted by John Farnsworth at July 26, 2005 04:40 PM

Surreal!

Posted by Brandon Erik Bertelsen at July 28, 2005 11:37 PM

WOw very well done! I think black and white is a very good choice for this shot!! hm.. I don't know how that guy sitting on the bench endded up as a gohst ;) but it's a wonderful shot! keep it up that way!

Posted by Mona at July 30, 2005 02:22 AM

Nice image! Respectfully, I think Mr. Farnsworth sounds a little defensive. I don't see where anyone is knocking Photoshop. Sam uses it extensively, and explains his "tricks" for all to understand. He'd hardly be bashing one of his favourite tools.

(although I would have to say that using photoshop to INTRODUCE a visual item to an image would be less photography and more digital art).
