yes, i think the macro lens would have been a nice choice here. i think the white could have been a bit brighter. overall an interesting photo.

Very interesting photo -- kind of creepy. :-)

Great DOF!

Wow, that is a well spotted shot!

mmmm, ants... like an enlargement from a Salvador Dali painting

Only you would think of shooting this!!!1
Thank you for making me laugh this a.m.

Looks like my garden, ants always on my flowers but it helps the peonies open at least. Love the shot!

Posted by Kim at July 8, 2005 09:33 AM

nice macro shot. white colour of the flower is a nice background for dark coloured ants.

"Ants! ANTS!!"
(said with a German accent, of course)

Great shot. My grandmother's bathing cap is jealous.

As an amateur photgrapher (in Mtl) this is an inspiring site. Keep it up!

funny, i didn't notice the ants at first, just thought they were dark spots on the flower :-) guess i need more coffee!

I have been following your site for about a year now, and I do have to admit that I love most of your work. Very inspiring, and I look forward to viewing your site daily. Definitely the best photoblog I've seen on the web thusfar. I just keep comming back. Keep up the good work.

Cool shot. I didn't recognize that they were ants, at first. A macro version would be nice also, but this picture stands pretty well on its own.

oh, I'm feeling all itchy now, looking at that!!

Posted by Neil at July 8, 2005 12:17 PM

If they had been, say, ladybugs, the photo would have a totally different feel.......there's something a bit evil about ants - they are so relentless. They make an interesting contrast to the innocent beauty of the flower which hosts them. One gets the feeling that they've taken over the globe!

Good eye as always, Sam - lovely capture! Thanks!

(I'm really sorry you missed last night's sunset though - it was spectacular!)

Nice shot of the Canadian ants.

Posted by Marie at July 8, 2005 01:13 PM

ants seem to love those things, i remember when i was a kid, I'd pick up a nice flower like that and be ready to stick it near my nose to smell. The ants would all of a sudden then run wild, and I would drop it and start screaming bloody murder. *sigh*

should have called it "Queen Ants Lace"

besides that, I guess you didn't have time for any colour correction as the flowers on Queen Anne's Lace is white, not cyan!

Posted by e at July 8, 2005 02:32 PM

WOAH! ANTS!! took me a while and they scared the s*** outta me! lol! nice shot!

Posted by Andy at July 8, 2005 05:20 PM

Wow I just took a shot almost identical to this earlier today before checking your site, minus the ants though.

Flowers with bugs strike me as the most honest of presentations. Without the bugs - no polination and no more flowers. But I bet some folk find it creepy.

I note your comment on macro extensions and will e mail you for info.

cool shot. in most of your photos, using the fixed width usually makes the landscape/horizontal shots too small and the portrait/vertical shots (slightly) too big. this square crop is a nice balance.

Lovely shot of Queen Anne's lace. I never realized that ant's were so fond of them. Nice even without the macro.
I visit your site frequently and often use your wonderful photos for my wallpaper. You make me want to visit Toronto again - but for an extended stay. So many photo ops!

Posted by wilkiepup at July 9, 2005 05:10 PM

Ooh I want to print it out and connect the dots(ants).

Posted by wookiee at July 15, 2005 11:30 AM

It's natural, but kind of creepy. Makes me want to say yipes and back away.
