Posted by Abbas Bloorchi at June 27, 2005 05:10 AM

This shot feels surreal and is phenomenal. thank you.

Posted by anne at June 27, 2005 05:41 AM

Quite surreal. It looks like shot on Mars.

Posted by Susie at June 27, 2005 05:44 AM

Wow, wow, wow what a beautiful shot Sam wonderful colours the pale oranges of the background seem to be the same hue as the foreground rocks.

Posted by Keely Williams at June 27, 2005 05:45 AM

This is one of the best long exposure shots I have ever seen. The flashlight to your friend was handled perfectly!

Posted by izzy at June 27, 2005 05:46 AM

Wow...

Now this is really cool, and indeed, good job for standing still for 40 secs !

Posted by Vahid at June 27, 2005 07:41 AM

this is one of those things that makes you say OM*G..

Posted by Dmitri Z at June 27, 2005 07:48 AM

damn, it's magic....

Posted by alireza at June 27, 2005 08:09 AM

Outstanding clarity and detail! The sky looks like a gradient. I didn't believe it was real until I read the caption.

Posted by Alicia at June 27, 2005 08:12 AM

Um... mang? 40 seconds? Those stars look like pinpoints with no movement - quite awesome!

Posted by Houser at June 27, 2005 08:22 AM

This is a great shot. I've tried similar shots with a point and shoot digital camera with exposure lenghts all the way to 30sec (the max for my camera) but none of them were as good as this. I've been looking at your blog for the past few days and I think you do great work. Keep it up.

Posted by Lucas, A at June 27, 2005 08:25 AM

Nice one. I wonder what colour could describe the mood of the picture.

Posted by feydey at June 27, 2005 08:41 AM

I have no words for how gr8 that photo looks, youre photos are trulling inspiring! keep it up!

Posted by Hitesh Sawlani at June 27, 2005 09:10 AM

Bar-none one of your very best shots. GREAT image!

Posted by Pixeldog at June 27, 2005 09:17 AM

sam, i think you made it very hard for yourself because any photo after this one, will just be "okay", can't get any better than this. this is pure art.

Posted by sanjin at June 27, 2005 09:21 AM

what a beautiful photograph. it belongs in a travel book!!

Posted by Maria at June 27, 2005 09:25 AM

hey man nice shot !! i wish i could take longer exposures with my crappy camera :(

Posted by kyle at June 27, 2005 09:33 AM

Breathtaking creativity! Taking a literal shot in the dark armed with a flashlight is a bold move. Ansel Adams used to amaze himself by what he "discovered" in his shots in the darkroom. You're in company with the great ones.

Your technique is unique and not easy to duplicate. I know you like variety but consider shooting a series of 'dark discoveries' and publishing them.

(Shahin's b+w photos are also fantastic.)

Posted by Kevin at June 27, 2005 09:57 AM

40 seconds! Poor model!! :)

REALLY great shot!

Posted by Guilherme at June 27, 2005 10:21 AM

Very, very cool! My husband does astrophotography; he'll love this shot.

My friend's uncle gets astrophotos on the front page of TIME and such things, using that rock-painting technique down in the southern CA desert.

Posted by Rachel at June 27, 2005 10:24 AM

Outstanding Sam!

Posted by Mali at June 27, 2005 10:32 AM

I agree, this really is a great shot. The way you've lit the foreground is very soft, just right.

But, uh, Shahin? Seriously dude, using a flash won't make the stars brighter. :-)

Posted by Scott at June 27, 2005 10:47 AM

PLUS! You were in my neighbourhood and you didn't drop by the party??! Threre were some good photos ops there I tell ya!

Posted by Scott at June 27, 2005 10:50 AM

whoa.

the only thing I think would've looked nicer is if shahin's head/upper body wasn't spotlighted as it is... is it was dimmed out so he was more lost in the stars would've looked nicer. but in either case, this photograph is still... well..

wow.

Posted by Justin at June 27, 2005 11:01 AM

I thought he was standing still for 40s too. But then I thought, if it was so black and sam flashlighted him, maybe he only had to stand still for the flashlight part really?

Posted by Emily at June 27, 2005 11:05 AM

Fantastic shot - would love to hear exactly 'how' you did this...

Posted by Adam at June 27, 2005 11:32 AM

Posted by faramarz at June 27, 2005 01:01 PM

Brilliant photo... the spot lighting with a flashlight was really ingenious, great intuition. Nice glow captured from the horizon... most likely Hamilton on the right and Rochester from across the lake on the left.

Posted by David at June 27, 2005 01:05 PM

My first thought was, "This is not Toronto. Where is he?" Then read the caption. Night photography is tough (I thought Toronto lights had permanently obscured our stars), but then to also show a common sight in such a different light that it's unrecognizable... that's good!

Posted by talk talkt talk at June 27, 2005 01:24 PM

Looks dreamy! Reminds me of "Mosafer Kocholoo" cartoon!

Posted by Ghazal at June 27, 2005 01:57 PM

Truly outstanding Sam! This is your best photo for many reasons: excellent skill/technique, composition, subject matter, foreground/background, lighting, ... I can't find any bad points at all! My best shots would be your worst! I just bet tomorrows shot will be parade shots!

Posted by Lorin Halpert at June 27, 2005 10:20 PM

This is, without doubt, the most amazing picture I've seen all week. Stunning results.

What's the little shiny object on the lake horizon?

Posted by Robert at June 27, 2005 10:24 PM

Hey Sam, gotta get us a wallpaper of this one! It's so coooool! Keep up the great work. P.S. I heard you like photographing zombies. I might have a job for you next year (launching a horror/sci-fi film fest in Toronto). Keep you posted!

Posted by Adam Ahmad at June 27, 2005 10:46 PM

jeez man why do ppl try to show off their knowledge of stuff??? obviously sam knows what he's doing, and we dont need to hear about bullshit like the constellation and other shit about the camera!

guys, just appreciate the shot! san did an excellent job with it, and he wants you to ENJOY it!

thanks everyone

Posted by bob at July 1, 2005 10:13 PM

Spectacular shot! I love the lighting effects you did with your flashlight! (very creative) I’m very impressed that your friend was able to stand still for so long; there is no distortion around him. Thanks for sharing this wonderful photo!

Posted by SmileTO at July 5, 2005 07:32 AM

This does seem surreal. You are having a lot of fun with the long exposures and it is paying off. Nice shot.
