Surprisingly good focus for a shot taken by luck.

You were going the opposite way of the Toronto Reference Library?

Neat picture.... I like it. But I will definitely heed your advice. I thought about doing something similar when I was in my car and driving over a particular interesting suspension bridge in my area. Common sense prevailed, thank goodness, since you have to keep both eyes on the way people drive around here.

coooooool.

Posted by maria at June 8, 2005 12:46 AM

nice shoot!

Posted by Cristian F at June 8, 2005 12:51 AM

I love it - great shot! The motion and colors are all very nice! But I will have to ignore your advice so I can try this too!

Posted by abe at June 8, 2005 01:15 AM

LOL - nope won't try that on my bike either :) They do make these clamp things so you can put your camera on your bike - motorcycle - but it should work the same for bicycles.

Posted by jamie at June 8, 2005 01:22 AM

definitely, sense the moment

Posted by dave at June 8, 2005 01:22 AM

i like this!

do i smell a little DIY camera mount on the bike? would come handy for sure

Posted by faramarz at June 8, 2005 01:24 AM

Nice one-handed shot ;)

Posted by Ed at June 8, 2005 01:26 AM

Lol... Crazy Mofo. :)

Posted by Chris at June 8, 2005 02:00 AM

This reminds me of years ago when my brother used to take pictures with his new camera while driving his CAR, steering with his knees as he focussed......drove me crazy!

A risky shot, Sam, but a beautiful one! Interesting composition is obviously so intuitive with you that you don't need to look anymore.

Is that a bike cop ahead of you? Good thing there wasn't one behind you! :-)

And it was great to meet you and Titka, by the way....thanks for the opportunity to do so!

Posted by Kathy at June 8, 2005 02:11 AM

Hey Sam!
That's my 'hood! :-) I live like 30 seconds from the next set of lights on Yonge and Alexander.
Excellent image, I am tempted to try it... but knowing how rude the taxi drivers are to cyclists on Yonge St, I'm almost scared to let go of the handlebars. I'll see if I can try this on a more deserted street. Thanks for the idea.

I've been thinking about putting a tripod mount somewhere on my camera for just this reason.. :D

Posted by samira at June 8, 2005 02:49 AM

nice result, especially considering the situation.. it's something i've thought of doing but never risked.

Posted by darragh at June 8, 2005 03:25 AM

It's great!

Posted by Peter Vasilyev at June 8, 2005 03:38 AM

funny shot and nice as well

Posted by DavidFF at June 8, 2005 03:46 AM

I had a thrill when I saw this picture! Once I did such a thing, and I crashed with my face on the sidewalk's corner.

Posted by Paolino at June 8, 2005 03:53 AM

Nice!

nice shot :)

Posted by djam at June 8, 2005 04:18 AM

Ha, cool. I might have to try this, maybe I'll hang my A95 round my neck though!

Posted by Andy (SensorChip) at June 8, 2005 05:14 AM

Look like you captured the only piece of litter in Toronto!
Always love your photos - thanks!

Posted by Deirdre at June 8, 2005 05:21 AM

cool shot! I tried the same thing the other day on my mountain bike, but I didn't have the camera so low - I much prefer your shot to the one I got!!

Posted by owen at June 8, 2005 07:23 AM

Great shot - too bad you weren't going any faster to get more of sense of speed.

But don't kill yourself doing these shots!

Posted by Adam at June 8, 2005 07:49 AM

Is that a cop on the bike in front of you?
Good thing they weren't looking at you do this!!!

Posted by qoJ at June 8, 2005 08:05 AM

Great photo! love the moving background! :)
Yes, in fact it's pretty dangerous! Be careful m8! :)

Posted by Ethan at June 8, 2005 08:07 AM

well, i guess you are lucky, cause composition is really good here.
colors too...

thanks

Posted by nicolas at June 8, 2005 08:09 AM

wow, that's a nice shot

but sam how could you risk your xt man? :P

Posted by shahin at June 8, 2005 08:33 AM

I think this is a good composition, all the more exciting because it was snapped almost (and I know it is "almost") at random. it;s a reminder that the world is full of good compositions. We just have to "find" them. thanks for always being a reliable source of intriguing images!

Is that a little bell?

Posted by Mark at June 8, 2005 09:24 AM

Thinking on the left side of the brain and creating with the right hand.

Posted by bjam at June 8, 2005 09:29 AM

sam, this is very interesting shot. composition couldn't be better than this. i like how the front of the bike is focused and everything else is blurred.
i like the way how you put parameters of the camera for each picture you take, that really helps us, thanks.

all the best!

Posted by vozdra at June 8, 2005 09:44 AM

Really :D ?
Don't commit camera suicide please :/
Why don't you let your two hands ?? sorry.. :)

Not only is it dangerous it is also dumb. I don't usually comment but when I see a crotch-level out-of-focus shot of a McDonalds I wonder what is the point.

Posted by Joe Jackson at June 8, 2005 10:06 AM

Absolutely awesome, the best one in a while and my new desktop (any chance of getting a wallpaper size one!?)

I have to admit then the last few days with the competitions it was not that interesting, but this just shows you haven't lost the talent!

Keep up the good work

Posted by Greg Bains at June 8, 2005 10:13 AM

Come on you could have taken both hands off the bike and given us a shot even on both sides without your left hand getting in the way :)

Love it, great concept shot.

Posted by Ryan Morrison at June 8, 2005 10:21 AM

Great shot!

I found a less dangerous way to take shots while riding. The photo from my link was taken from a camera that was mounted to my bike with a remote trigger on my handlebars.

this is great shot. the focus is pretty good. u have an amaizing gallery.

Posted by maya at June 8, 2005 02:29 PM

I tried it some time ago. But i were unlucky -> all the photos went to the bin.

Posted by Hannes at June 8, 2005 02:39 PM

Nice shot, daredevil. Not only do you have the same camera as me, but you ride with the same serfas grips!

Posted by Richard Hayter at June 8, 2005 02:49 PM

Sam, you're nuts. No wonder you're so good! All geniuses are insane! ;D

Posted by fragileheart at June 8, 2005 03:57 PM

take care

Posted by خسته at June 8, 2005 04:48 PM

I visit daily, have my own photblog, went to see the yyz exhibit, AND I cycle daily....
Well I did until I was hit by a dude running a red on Friday.
Please do not take these shots!! I want to see more of your work, and dont want to think of some other fan trying to copy this!!
Be safe Sam!!

Posted by Rae-Ann at June 8, 2005 04:55 PM

I'm always enjoy your photos! How can you take this photo. Amazing!!!

Posted by Kaoru at June 8, 2005 05:57 PM

Ok, awesome pic and all (the main point of this site, eh), but might I suggest some 1.25" city-slick tires? The improvement in speed & efficiency is significant.

Posted by BrotherAli at June 9, 2005 02:53 AM

Interesting idea, probably not the best idea to do on a city street but nice effect anyway.

Posted by SteveO at June 9, 2005 05:48 AM

awesome shot, love the speed and that yellow person in front. are we chasing him? :)

Posted by mot at June 9, 2005 12:38 PM

Nice, Love it!

Posted by Ghazal at June 9, 2005 02:19 PM

AWESOME SHOT :)

Very nice (:

Posted by Anouchka at June 10, 2005 12:42 PM

I was biking through the Alps this past weekend and remembered this shot. I made the mistake of putting the camera up to my eye and looking through the viewfinder. I was going too fast and had to squeeze the brakes on my left hand which controlled the front brakes. This sent me flipping over my handle bars and crash landing on my back (safely! thank goodness).
Your shot still came out better than mine. =)

Posted by Ariel at June 15, 2005 12:39 PM

cool shot! by the way: your bell/ring is mounted wrong :)
