Comments: plane, crane and clouds

Hello!

Beautiful imagery! Especially appealing are the details in the clouds. The variation in color and texture draw the viewers eye to focus across the photograph.

The Skydome does have a nice and sexy curve. I think it will always be known as the Skydome even though it's called the Rogers Centre now. I like the siluettes. Interestinig relationship between the positive and negative space. The crane looks so cool against that cloud. And the airplane as it seems to be heading towards the buildings adds a kind of eerie feel to the shot.

oh, oh, do I get to be the first commentator, today? How very exciting.

I absolutely love the second photo -- that's an astounding cloud. Wow.

Posted by Christine at June 3, 2005 12:47 AM

I love how the first photo the cloud actually looks like a crane....cheers!

Posted by Arieh at June 3, 2005 01:07 AM

Great shot!! Those clouds look absolutely brillian!!

Posted by Ian at June 3, 2005 01:07 AM

Oh my! How dramatic, fantastic capture!

Posted by JamesK at June 3, 2005 01:13 AM

interesting!

Posted by mehdi at June 3, 2005 02:01 AM

those cloud formations are incredible. i really like the second picture, especially the fact that the buildings and the crane are just silhouettes. i think its a nice contrast to the clouds and the sky.

Posted by Will at June 3, 2005 02:53 AM

wwwwwooooooowwwwwwww
i love this ne.
like everyday, great colors..
the second one is almost surreal....
looks like a painting.

Posted by nicolas at June 3, 2005 02:56 AM

Beautiful silhouette. I like silhouette too.

Posted by .:pvav.photoblog:. at June 3, 2005 03:04 AM

These two images are truly amazing. Probably the best use of negative space I've seen.

Posted by Hexley at June 3, 2005 03:25 AM

That's one crazy looking cloud. I like how that portion of it just seems to explode out of the other. Great shot.

Posted by Matt at June 3, 2005 03:32 AM

Clouds are cool.

Love these two, the two focal lengths work really well.

Posted by Andy (SensorChip) at June 3, 2005 03:56 AM

Cool, i really like the clouds and how low the plane appears to be. Nice timing getting the plane in just the right place.

All in the eye of a beholder
When is a jumbo not a jumbo!

Posted by Mike Hall at June 3, 2005 05:41 AM

Loved the cotton-candy clouds :) The silhouettes make the shots so interesting!

Widget update. There is no picture today because two were loaded and I am assuming the program does not know which one to select. If this is fixable, perhaps the widget could default to the top photo. Great shots needless to say. cheers, anne

Posted by Anne at June 3, 2005 06:18 AM

amazing.. looks like the makings of a crazy t-storm! :)

I love the plane in there too..

Posted by Wes at June 3, 2005 06:43 AM

Wow, what a clouds outline. Fantastic moment!

Posted by Kubula at June 3, 2005 06:45 AM

Splendid!
Well done, Sam.

Posted by Ron at June 3, 2005 07:05 AM

What a beautiful cloud :) Is that plane trying to crash into that crane?? Should we be concerned? J/K :)

Posted by Kat at June 3, 2005 07:26 AM

Cool pics. Are those specs in the horizon birds?

Posted by ml at June 3, 2005 07:53 AM

I have been hoping you'd get some shots of the great summer clouds we've been having over the last week or so. Great stuff. You just have to keep up with Toronto news Sam!!

skyDome = Old and Busted

The Rogers Centre = The new Hotness

They changed the name a couple of months ago.

Posted by qoJ at June 3, 2005 08:03 AM

what a wonderful shot!
i like this photoblog ;)

Posted by max at June 3, 2005 08:05 AM

Oh Wow, Sam. The silhouetting is fabulous and the way the airplane is ohso small really helps define the depth and scale. Really great work (as always). I have always loved those huge clouds -- in the second shot I see a gingerbread man. . .

Posted by myla at June 3, 2005 08:21 AM

oh my god. thats just awesome. can you break down the post-processing for this?

Posted by jesse at June 3, 2005 08:48 AM

Ok, Sam.
This series has blown me away!
To an outsider, this would seem like an expert used Photoshop to "create" this photo from two shots(clouds/sky and city backdrop), but knowing your work, style, and collection, I know this was done with one take and no PS! I just changed my desktop background from your "thorn macro" to this one!

Cheers!

speechless...

Posted by sinstone at June 3, 2005 08:53 AM

Arplane attacking CN Tower with nuclear explosion in background :-)

Don't worry - that's just a bad dream, awesome shot Sam!

Posted by riso at June 3, 2005 09:46 AM

nice shots....i like the way that the shape of the clouds mimics the shape of the crane in the first image.

Posted by dan eckstein at June 3, 2005 09:53 AM

oh my god, amazing.

Posted by wootam! at June 3, 2005 10:16 AM

OMG! That looks like an ash cloud from an erupting volcano! For a moment I thought Mt. Pinatubo or Mt. Popocatepetl was spewing out hot gases. The building silhouttes added impact to the imposing white cloud. Excellent photograph!

José :-)

Sam. I was gone for a little while on vacation and came back to see these awesome picetures. The eye thing tripped me out dude. I like all of your photos. I like the way you put the plane directly over the building, in this one, with the 200mm. As always, I love your work and you make me want a 350d more and more everytime I click on your site. Maybe someday. Keep it up Sam.

Posted by Nate at June 3, 2005 11:11 AM

Wow Sam

these are good photographs. I wonder if you could ever do a timelapse shot of clouds like that as they billow into the air, like your timelapse shots you did last year, but this time focusing on the cumulous formations and at shorter intervals to see the movement and convections. Can you consider it?

Keep up the good work

Jacques

Lovely photos, Sam. The clouds are incredible. Great timing on the plane. I like what that 70-200 L lens can do.

Posted by abe at June 3, 2005 11:13 AM

The clouds seems a Imperial Class Star Destroyer from StarWars, much more on first shot, don't u see ?

PD: Nice take !

Posted by Enric at June 3, 2005 03:15 PM

nice work with the clouds! The look so soft and plush.

Posted by mel at June 3, 2005 04:54 PM

The 2nd image almost reminds me in feel of a shot of L.A... something about the silhouetted rectangular buildings and the plane just seem so cold/lonely/modern... not so much like toronto at all! The clouds are gorgeous, yet a little frightful too. Great exposure choice...

Posted by Tanja > DoubleCrossed.ca at June 3, 2005 05:32 PM

i like the silhouette against the white clouds. i think the bottom half of the second one could be a little brighter as to have the plane and the buildings stand out a bit more, but i assume the lighting wasn't the greatest. still a lovely pair of shots.

Posted by rich at June 3, 2005 06:50 PM

Oh my, that's magnificant! I gasped when I saw these. I hope you don't mind that I saved these on my computer (just for my own personal viewing pleasure). I collect sky pictures, and these are soooooooo beautiful!

Posted by michelle at June 3, 2005 07:03 PM

The mood is too ominous for me. A little bit more cheerful will be good for a pic on Friday. Yeah, where do the usual vibrant colors go?

Posted by Boreo at June 3, 2005 07:32 PM

Yeah Toronto has been getting some crazy clouds lately. I took quite a few pics the other day but I just cant decide which ones to post.. Tough decision. I may have to post more than one.

Good capture btw, nice silhouette of the buildings.

Posted by Raffi at June 3, 2005 09:38 PM

Wow, was this on tuesday night? The clouds were spectacular that night over here in Pickering. Beautiful capture of them?

Posted by Tyler at June 4, 2005 12:17 AM

the fisrt one is very graphic !! fantastic !!!

Posted by yoyolito at June 4, 2005 06:31 AM

Did anyone else notice that the cloud formation in the first picture looks like the space ship from the first Star Wars (Episode 4), in the very beginning when they are beind chased?

Posted by John at June 4, 2005 10:39 AM

Wow, I've seen a lot of your photos, and I've got to say that these are a couple of my favorites. Very nice.
