wow, #4 ran a 38-minute 10k, not bad at all!

Posted by Jon Clark at May 30, 2005 01:38 AM

Is it a women only event? What happened to all the guys?

Posted by okleydo at May 30, 2005 02:34 AM

:) I saw more women than men here running...and the last pic is my favorite.

Question: How many ten year olds doese it take to make a pair of shoes?
Answer: I don't know, ask Nike.

great shots as usual sam. but seriously, 10,000 people came out for Nike??!! do they really have that much control over us? you can't get a fraction of that many people to give a **** about something like, say, genocide in some African country, but throw out a few trendy ads all over the city and the Pavlovian drool starts flowing. "must...just...do it..."

Posted by allan lissner at May 30, 2005 05:01 AM

excellent job on the pathos of narrative here: the first shot is in momentary anticipation of what is to come and the last shot is the essence of achievement with the in-between shots containing pure energy driven unfoldings of the story. your best documentary i have seen yet sam!!

btw: do you plan these kinds of shots or do they just come out of your random collection of snaps for the day at a particular event?

I was in this race. It was a great time. Wish I had taken my camera as well. When I was on the ferry back I saw a few people taking photos of the Toronto waterfront. Then I was thinking maybe one of them is the guy who runs the daily dose site. :-P

Later,

The first shot is spectacular. Frame it.

Posted by dan at May 30, 2005 08:57 AM

the picture of the calm observer is awesome... good stuff

Posted by sinstone at May 30, 2005 09:10 AM

I, too, really like the first shot. It's more than just a blown-out background -- it's a very neat expression with just enough showing under the umbrella to excite interest. Cool stuff. I'm not such a fan of the second one, as nothing seems to be in focus, but the fourth and fifth are decent. Really, though, the first one is the best of the bunch.

The last shot is by far the strongest in my opinion. A wonderfully deferent approach to photographing a race/ runner Amazing colors.

I bet, the runto's server admin is quite amused to see that 4 and 10019 are the most controlled BIB numbers :D

Posted by sepp at May 30, 2005 11:03 AM

wow the first one and the last one are amazing...

Hey Sam,

That was nice talking to you yesterday. While it was a great opportunity to take photos, I was soo worried for my camera. At one point, it was completely wet!

Anyway nice shots once again. The last one's the best I can add as well.

First shot is fantastic. Love the rich orange in the rest. Great job!

Have Christo and Jeanne Claude come to the Toronto Islands? :-D

Nice series, Sam - I particularlly like the alpha and the omega!

Great first shot!

Posted by rz at May 30, 2005 12:41 PM

Nice shot, does the #4 has anything to do with you being from IRAN?

Posted by Frank at May 30, 2005 12:44 PM

Was it only 10000? Seemed like more!
These are beautiful shots. I wish I had known you were going to be there, I would've asked you to take some shots of my band(we were playing the concert).

The woman in the first shot just looks great!

Posted by arieh at May 30, 2005 02:34 PM

nice orange pics! made the images come to life!

Posted by aashish at May 30, 2005 07:42 PM

I love the assortment of colors in the first pic.

Posted by chris at May 30, 2005 08:43 PM

the first photo is the best. The woman exudes a sense of quiet waiting and observation. She seems interested in something for more compelling than the race.

Posted by chris at May 30, 2005 09:10 PM

Awsome pictures. Especially the first one. Theres some drama in that picture that I cant explain, but I like.

Posted by Raffi at May 30, 2005 11:48 PM

More great people shots - very nice! Love the colors, action, and essence of the emotion of the event.

Posted by abe at May 31, 2005 12:23 AM

I can't get my eyes of the first shot. You caught her in an interesting expression, I want to ask her what she is thinking.
The other photos in the series tell a nice story, but the first one gets the podium.

I think Nike has the best marketing people in the world, just look at the second shot, "WHO RUNS THIS TOWN?", "NIKE"

Brilliant brains...

Posted by Nikolai at May 31, 2005 10:39 AM

Especially love the first shot, beautiful DOF...

Great shots Sam, I wish I'd gone over now, if I'd known they would all be wearing orange I would have dammit!

Posted by miles at May 31, 2005 11:59 PM

Beautiful color again! The woman in the first photo has otherwordly eyes - very cool.

Posted by Danielle at June 2, 2005 10:35 AM

Great set of shots. I have recently begun doing race photography and it's just so much fun, all-around. Looks like you had fun as well!

Posted by Saroy at June 2, 2005 10:40 PM

Loved the energy in the shots - you certainly managed to bring it to life in your pics. Excellent job!

i like your blog

damn nike fascists.

go out for a protest against globalisation or the war on iraq or genocide rather than for some corporate cool.
checkout adbusters.com

nike uses slave labour.
