Comments: whitby self portrait II

Hello Sam !
Great effect, and I find very interesting the way you deal with selfportraits…go on, your work gets always better in all directions ! isn't it a nice start in the day ? ;-)

Posted by jo at April 21, 2005 03:07 AM

i feel this is a very appropriate portrait for you. your face is obscured by your camera, just as your identity is obscured by the photos you post every day: we know you from your photos more than from our interactions with you (most of us, at least).

the texturing adds a great effect. just as there are cracks in the paint, nobody's life is without its imperfections.

Posted by Jon Clark at April 21, 2005 03:07 AM

NICE SAM!

Posted by DavidFF at April 21, 2005 03:20 AM

The photo's fine :)

350d seems to be quite small - i am looking forward to your review.

Posted by bmoll at April 21, 2005 03:55 AM

hey.
i like it!
i think, photoshop is a good tool, for me its equal if its photoshopped double layered or if its double exposed ba cam.

sry for my english, im german ;)

best regards,
chrische

Wo-oh! This initially startled me. I'm glad you don't have a skin condition! It's very interesting what can be done in photoshop.

I'm looking forward to your mini review of the xt, since I recently purchased one and sold my rebel 300d.

Nice job on this composition.

i love this psychiartic' series
all of its pictures are amazing...

Posted by nicolas at April 21, 2005 04:34 AM

I love how you edited the texture of the wall.

Posted by char at April 21, 2005 05:19 AM

I particularly like this picture. I could ss how it was done, and I applaud the results. Beautiful.

Posted by Andrew at April 21, 2005 05:33 AM

Love it. Very cool mix.

Posted by Adrian at April 21, 2005 05:46 AM

I have been checking your archive and the conclusion is that you are my hero. You take a sensibility as the surprising photography and an enviable look. Congratulations

Posted by Ramon at April 21, 2005 05:51 AM

welcome to matrix !!!

Posted by mamad at April 21, 2005 06:12 AM

I think that picture is ace, and you're very brave for going in there heh. I live not far from Whitby, closer towards Middlesbrough. I only just stumbled across your site so thought I'd leave this little message. x

Posted by Laura at April 21, 2005 06:32 AM

Okay slightly confused as I live in the UK and we have a Whitby too. :) Now realise it's not the same one. I too have a Canon 300D thought, yet my pictures aren't anywhere near as good as yours.

Posted by Laura at April 21, 2005 06:34 AM

Right on Sam! That's awesome.

Posted by Charles at April 21, 2005 07:03 AM

looks awesome and I like photoshop ;)

Posted by timo at April 21, 2005 07:15 AM

Awesome work.

Posted by Ali at April 21, 2005 07:21 AM

Oh my gosh I love this one!
I am very a big fan of creepy photographs.

PS: You can't lie about whether you took the picture handheld or on a tripod! :p

Posted by Jeff at April 21, 2005 07:57 AM

I think the image is brilliant. But then, I like digital art.

Posted by dan at April 21, 2005 08:04 AM

Looks like a great place to photography. You seemed to have caught your spluttering photo Id personality. The zone where intuitive tramples cognitives into the greasy dirt.

Posted by Gord Is Dead at April 21, 2005 08:28 AM

One of the coolest shots you've done. Very nice.

Posted by Pixeldog at April 21, 2005 08:32 AM

Is this how you take all of your photos, using your third eye?

Posted by designguy at April 21, 2005 09:04 AM

I love it. Cannot wait to see the XT review.

Posted by Nick MacDonald at April 21, 2005 09:14 AM

I really like this photo. i realize alot of people get fussy about using photoshop. but in all honity we all like takeing pictures and finding something visually pleasing. so adding textures just like you would doubleexpose shouldent be something to write hate mails about. i love the picure, keep up the good work

Posted by Brendan McInerney at April 21, 2005 09:18 AM

Amusant les auto-portraits.....

Bravo pour les photos quotidiennes....j'aime venir y faire mon petit tour...

Bonne journée

you have to be absolutely starving for attention to send hatemail for shopping...even if you can't reproduce the effect in the darkroom. anyone who hates on that enough to send you emails is pathetic and should get a life.

anyway - the wall texture is unreal. great effect. no hate or offense here, but i'd say this shot looks like a canon ad - or if it had color it would make a good adobe splash screen, but that's probably just the feeling I get when I see any corporate logos in art.

Posted by pete at April 21, 2005 10:17 AM

No photoshop hater here. Very nice, I like the effect. You are correct in that many photographers did the same type of thing using double exposure and other dark room tricks.

Very well done.

Posted by Tom B at April 21, 2005 10:19 AM

I quite like it, and the first thing I thought was "I need that!" I am a fan of your Whitby series and this is has made it to be one of my top three favorites in the line. Keep up the great work!

Posted by windy at April 21, 2005 10:47 AM

I love all your self portraits. This one is amazing too.

Posted by SlicesofLife at April 21, 2005 11:32 AM

Now you know what you'll look like when the mayor of Toronto erects a painted concrete statue of you at Nathan Phillips Square and the finish eventually peels off! Maybe we should get them to do you in bronze.

Very interesting effect, Sam! No 'hate mail' here!

I wish I could be at PubliCity tonight to shake that peeling hand in person, but I shall be at Roy Thomson Hall listening to the Kirov Orchestra tonight! :-)

Posted by Kathy at April 21, 2005 11:35 AM

Photoshop is our friend. Now say that 10 times!

:)

Posted by Arne at April 21, 2005 11:42 AM

love it

Posted by kandi at April 21, 2005 11:54 AM

I also like the effect very much! Makes a great selfportrait!

Posted by Irene at April 21, 2005 12:17 PM

All that's missing from this shot is a drop shadow and a bevel. :P

Nice work!

Posted by DBT at April 21, 2005 12:35 PM

The photos is nicely composed...I wonder though, if you've already got it in Photoshop, why not take out "Canon"? It would seem less like an add. Maybe that doesn't bother you? What a great opportunity to get to shoot in an abandoned psychiatric hospital. Do you get creeped out?

Posted by Andrea at April 21, 2005 12:42 PM

Nice photo! How did you customize google like that?

Posted by Steph at April 21, 2005 12:47 PM

I think it's an awesome effect and a gorgeous photo. I love where the texture on the wall overlaps with your right hand.

Posted by Kelly at April 21, 2005 01:38 PM

Interesting self portrait!

Posted by brian at April 21, 2005 01:47 PM

LOVE THEM. BOTH OF THE WHITBY SELF PORTRAITS.
JUST LOVE THEM.
please please can you do a demo of how you put the two pictures together?

Posted by Tasnuva at April 21, 2005 02:49 PM

350D mini review - interesting!

Posted by andrei at April 21, 2005 02:54 PM

I watched all your archives from whitby - I love the photos. I was once in v. similar place in my country (Poland) but it was awfully scary - those ruins were remnants of soviet occupation in Poland so there were some big crematories and lot of other quite shocking things

Posted by ewko at April 21, 2005 03:03 PM

Hate mails are usually jealousy mails. Both photographs are still the work of your hand, the manipulation of photoshop to layer these was also the work of your hand. This is still your picture. Still a wonderful picture... although a bit creepy! :)... well done.

Justin

Posted by Justin at April 21, 2005 03:08 PM

Great combination of pics - I might have flipped the image to get rid of the mirror reversal - just to mess with peoples minds a bit. I have no problems with people playing in Photoshop in general - as you say - could have been done in analog mode too.

Posted by Mike at April 21, 2005 04:12 PM

brilliant! i like the vintage-y feel.

Posted by amy at April 21, 2005 04:15 PM

Cool photo. I dont mind the photoshopping.

BTW, I went to the store in hopes of getting a Canon Rebel XT, but I was much dissapointed in MANY things so I ended up getting a Nikon D70 and I am much much much more satisfied with the D70. The Rebel had so many problems it wasnt even funny, plus the fact that some features were lacking and I didnt like the lens, and it kept giving ERROR 99 errors all the time... Looking forward to your review.

Sam. Damet Garm. Great work as usual.

Posted by Reza Mazaheri at April 21, 2005 05:21 PM

See, the problem is that I don't hate you.Actually you make me hate me!

Posted by Telli at April 21, 2005 06:16 PM

Hi Sam,

I wrote a comment earlier on, but would just like to ask one question:

I realize these pictures were taken in the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, likely at an earlier time. So why does the tooltip for the picture say you used the Canon 350D?

Justin

Posted by Justin at April 21, 2005 07:24 PM

The hate mails are just jealous of your beautiful work!!!!! I put your website on my favs. I check to see whats new everyday..hehe!!

Posted by Sami at April 21, 2005 07:30 PM

Good stuff Sammy.

As always, A+.

Posted by Dan Salmon at April 21, 2005 08:16 PM

I think todays picture is another good one, but I do have a quick statement regarding the photoshop thing... I like photoshop as well, I use it alot, mainly for colour correction etc. I'm not sure that it is the same as a darkroom though, Maybe someone with way more darkroom knowlegdge than I can shoot me down, but if you were double exposing, it would be much more difficult to get the exact picture you want... with Photoshop you could go through all your pictures and try them all to find the right one... but as I said, I like this picture and I think I might try a couple combinations myself...

Posted by Brad at April 21, 2005 08:21 PM

sam...you are THE man!!!!...one word for this pic...AMAZING!!!....in fact i am keeping it in my private images files to put it on my desktop...

Posted by still [frames] at April 21, 2005 08:39 PM

congrats on the new camera. I'm not a big fan of the double exposure- I've seen it overused in high school photography, so i've lost interest. however, you did do a nice job!

Posted by moscon at April 21, 2005 08:45 PM

i am a huge fan of double exposures...they can yield the most interesting compositions!

that whitby is a treasure trove of peeling paint...wow! very interesting series. this photo in particular makes me feel a bit...watched. eerie...

i linked you to my blog...let me know if you'd prefer not to be.

Posted by alix at April 21, 2005 09:36 PM

u cross-eyed photoshopping geek... Adobe would forbid my language.

Posted by Boreo at April 22, 2005 12:10 AM

You should have messed with everyones head and flipped the photo so the writing was the right way around. Then see who was the first to comment on it.

Cool shot. I for one vote for more photoshop "cheating".

Posted by qoJ at April 22, 2005 08:24 AM

becoming one with photo..feel the force sam.
or it brings another level to the paparazzi...

Posted by sdf at April 22, 2005 10:06 AM

I just wanted to say that you have been the sole inspiration for me to go out and pick up a camera, very much due to your innovative Point of View, and your bravery to challenge convention.

The world is in a large convergence to digital media, and computer enhancement of nearly all forms. The only large filmmaker left who refuses to shoot digital is Spielberg, and even he is faltering.

Nearly every photo of every star, every headshot, every press release, hass some form of photoshop to it. They just call it "airbrushing".

Thank you for showing it is not only to hide flaws or obscure things or to remove undesired elements, but that it is in fact a viable art form.

Succinctly, I think your work is brilliant, and inspiring.

Posted by Joshua P!! at April 22, 2005 06:11 PM

It's the one eye that I dig, like eye contact, nice shot. -dp

Posted by DaveP at April 23, 2005 01:58 AM

This is fantastic, I like the one eye too. The texture is so real it hurts my teeth. Sad to hear you get hate mail/comments. Keep up the super fantastic imagery. I've been a fan for some time.

Posted by Erin at April 23, 2005 08:23 AM

My 2 cents? I like the disease of your obsession. As for Photoshop:I remember my first experience with Photoshop 2.5 on a 68030 based mac with a staggering 8 megs of ram. Suddenly, I was like a god able to compress time and effect the my world with an inkling of the plasticity of my imagination. The only other day that even comes close is my first day in the darkroom except Photoshop multiplies me into 1000 mortals and makes time approach the sun's speed trailing across the sky.

A PURIST TO ANY SINGLE TECHNOLOGY IS A SOUL LOST TO THE TYRANNY OF MEDIOCRITY.

Posted by Don Colin at April 23, 2005 11:34 PM

Great work. Nothing wrong with a little Photoshop now and then, as long as it doesn't look like Photoshop and draw attention to itself.

Great site. I'll be coming back.

Posted by Patrick Wheeler at April 24, 2005 04:23 PM

I hope the digitally remastered rash clears up.

Hi Sam,
I haven't writen to you for a long time. I'm sorry but I have good excuses. I might not be able to write for another long time as well ;-) but that's the way it is, life is tough.
What I realy want you to know is that I realy love your photos. I don't care you work with photoshop. They do hell a lot of tricks in Labs that you do on computer and who else could do it so far? I haven't seen any, with such a quality. I realy missed your exhibition and realy regreted the fact I don't leave in Canada, what a pity.
However, this is my day to day exhibition of your pictures and I do enjoy looking at your photos and forget my daily occupations.
Thanks for your real hard work which I think there isn't any sponcor but love for them.

Dastet dard nakoneh,

Payam
