thats amazing! i love the concept.
Posted by Jami at April 4, 2005 12:47 AMso coool!
well done!
best!
nice job..i've been wanting to try this since seeing it somewhere too.....very cool
Posted by markmyshots at April 4, 2005 01:10 AMGet a mac man! I am sure that Toshiba is already obsolete!
Posted by Kaveh Kh. at April 4, 2005 01:40 AMI had the same reaction when just tonight I was sent the website indicated as my URL.
I thought, "How fun that would be!" Though I finish the term papers first.
(cute mousepad, btw.)
Awesome. A couple of ideas: You could also hide the desktop icons and put the taskbar at the bottom on Autohide. To hide the icons, right mouse click on the desktop. Hover the pointer on Arrange icons by, and remove the checkmark from Show desktop icons. You may need to click on the desktop to get them to go away. To autohide the taskbar, right mouse click on the taskbar, choose properties, and place a check mark in the Autohide the taskbar. Again, awesome!
Posted by peruby at April 4, 2005 02:47 AMYet another fantastic photo!! I love it.
Posted by Ian at April 4, 2005 03:39 AMhaha i like this.. very cute. =D
Posted by carolyn at April 4, 2005 04:06 AMWorked out pretty well, I saw this the first time on www.engadget.com some weeks ago.
Posted by Hitesh Sawlani at April 4, 2005 04:23 AMAmazing!
Thanks, Sam, for bringing this to our attention; and for the meticulous work you've done to produce today's example.
I would not have thought of this possibility; if I had, I would have thought it could not be done because "nobody is that good or that thorough". What does that say about what you have done?
It would be interesting to know more about the background of the Transparent Screens Pool.
Well done, Sam!
Creative shot, I like the picture on the laptop and than take a picture of that!
Posted by Chantal at April 4, 2005 04:54 AMPerhaps I don't get around much but I've never seen this done before! Great idea very well executed.
Posted by Simon C at April 4, 2005 05:04 AMGreate Photo! Really original!
Posted by Blue! at April 4, 2005 05:08 AMGood execution. The contrast and color on the laptop picture fits very well into the scene. What kind of tripod head is that? Looks like a damn nice one :)
Posted by Kenneth at April 4, 2005 05:16 AMNot an original idea...but very beautiful.
Posted by Ciro at April 4, 2005 05:44 AMMaybe not original, but very cool none the less.
Posted by Eric at April 4, 2005 07:14 AMhaha, may not be orignal, but i think your's was done the best.
Posted by Tony at April 4, 2005 07:17 AMThat is so cool. I love it!!
Posted by Ali at April 4, 2005 07:51 AMSam, aside from the left side of the screen (batman's shoulder, whatever is in front of him, and the speaker), this is perfect. Looks fun!
Posted by shrued at April 4, 2005 07:53 AMha ha - this is brilliant. nicely done - the background lines up perfectly.
Posted by ChrisK at April 4, 2005 08:21 AMI spot a Stikfas :]
The objects in the screen are exactly the same size as the real ones. Awesome. I like the contrast between the cold weather outside (that the window is fogged) and the warmth inside the room (the yellow gives a sense of warmth).
(sorry my English is not so good)
Posted by sehnsucht at April 4, 2005 08:25 AMthis is awesome. how many times did it take you to get the perfect shot on your desktop? can you explain that process?
Posted by blu at April 4, 2005 08:27 AMAlthough, as you say, it wasn't photoshopped...I reckon it'd be sooo much faster to do just that, and the result would look no different - perhaps except for the windows icons and start bar. I guess the idea of not photoshopping something is viewed as superior in some way...perhaps so. At any rate, nice job, it looks fantastic and it all lines up really well. Makes you look twice, and then even thrice...
Posted by Ryan at April 4, 2005 09:10 AMYea, but did you clean up the desktop first? I wish my desktop (not to mention my view) looked like that. :)
Posted by Andy at April 4, 2005 09:10 AMIt is an original idea. Just not yours. A pleasing photo regardless.
Take care-
Mark
Did you clean your desk to take this shot or are you always this neat? :D
Nice shot though, I love the idea of transparent screens.
Best Regards,
Posted by Gallinazul at April 4, 2005 10:06 AMyour idea was great!
Posted by Leila at April 4, 2005 10:46 AMAm especially in love with your egg yolk. =3
You have a captivating workspace indeed!
So, Sam, are we ever going to see the Loreo in action at [ ddoi ]?
Posted by Alex at April 4, 2005 11:11 AMThat's wicked. Loved the idea!
Posted by Giselle at April 4, 2005 12:09 PMRyan,
I'm not sure how using Photoshop would speed up duplicating this effect. You would still need to take a photo of whatever was behind the laptop.
I don't think you're fully grasping the concept.
You say it say gloomy. Still the colours are so bright, rain on the window notwithstanding. Like your mousepad ;)
Posted by Kat at April 4, 2005 12:44 PMi love everything about this photograph! from the image, to your mousepad...to your beautiful green walls! keep up the great photos! you're such an inspiration!
Posted by nix at April 4, 2005 12:57 PMi heart that mousepad. :)
nice shot btw. i saw this on flickr and have been wanting to try it.
Posted by grace at April 4, 2005 01:47 PMNice gear... that lens set you back a bit! Did this for an April Fools post. http://www.matt.dunmores.com/pad/archive/2005_04_01_PAD_archive.shtml#111241766057641125
Posted by matt at April 4, 2005 01:51 PMgreat shot! :) but i must admit.... i want that batman over there! ;)
Posted by ekrem at April 4, 2005 01:53 PMwooo edible mousepads are yummy.
batman of the future whoops ass, but there's no school like old school.
interesting, i like.
Posted by angela at April 4, 2005 02:11 PMdid you just acquired that "L" lens? or you just don't put images taken with that lens on DDOI? i notice that all images (or at least all the great images that i curiously hovered my mouse over to see the camera info) in this site were all shot with the drebel and the kit lens, which always amazes me. if my observation is correct, then i won't abandon my kit lens soon =)
Posted by ren at April 4, 2005 02:32 PMthats fucking beautiful!!!! ahhhh amazing!! i want oneeeeeeee>_<
Posted by Aaron at April 4, 2005 02:44 PMthe meme of this days. I do the same in this photo.
Posted by GLIJ at April 4, 2005 03:19 PMHeh yeah I saw this on other gadget sites. It works best if you have a laptop, since its easier to move the screen out of the way. Nicely done. Personally I dont have that much time on my hands right now, but I'm sure if I was really bored some day during the summer I'd give it a try.
Posted by Raffi at April 4, 2005 04:24 PMI LOVE YOUR MOUSEPAD... and the photo too, i found the idea very interesting, and the composition too... there's something about colors that look warm even when you say that there have been two snowy days in a row
Posted by mariel at April 4, 2005 05:56 PMA port in the storm; your visual logic always is : )
i live in a beautiful area & caught myself wondering how you might see the vertical poplars sailing by my car on the way home one evening.
btw: toronto's tourist industry owes you big time!
Posted by lyn at April 4, 2005 06:21 PMcaptain haddock! i haven't seen that old seadog since childhood. oh the memories...lying sprawled out on my stomach on the floor of my room, my sister and i surrounded by tintin books when it was raining outside. i have to admit that it took me a second to get to the transparent screen part of the image- i was captivated first by the captain.
Posted by ali at April 4, 2005 07:25 PMonce again something that made my day. I really like this photo. Great job!
Posted by Jen at April 5, 2005 12:35 AMsweet! first time i've seen that. additional comments: cool, we have the same laptop, and also, haven't your eye doctor told you not to put your screen against a window as this will ruin your eyes ;-)
Posted by patrick (nordilux.com) at April 5, 2005 01:05 AMSend us an update when it is sunny outside and rainy and gloomy on the computer!!
Posted by qoJ at April 5, 2005 08:10 AMHmmm...very surprised to see you are not using a Macintosh!
Posted by Mark at April 5, 2005 11:59 PMGreat effect. It's like I'm looking through the laptop. Looks transparent. Very nice.
Posted by Abe at April 6, 2005 01:10 AMVery clever - nice one Sam
Posted by Derek Hart at April 6, 2005 09:49 AMRyan... yes the effect may be easier to do in photoshop, with two pics and an overlay... but when you look at it in person, it's still just a laptop. With the transparent effect, even in person.. your co-workers, friends, etc. will notice the effect... pretty cool.
Very well done Sam, the only thing that doesn't line up properly is Batman.. .looks like he had one donut too many... :)
Wouldn't mind seeing more of these..
Justin
Posted by Justin at April 6, 2005 05:23 PMI see u did buy that Dark Knight Returns figure after all!
Posted by Mark at April 6, 2005 11:04 PMWow that's freaky, I have *exactly* the same laptop. Different wallpaper mind you.
Posted by adam at April 7, 2005 04:41 AMOriginal or not, the pic is excellent :)
Posted by Shruthi at April 7, 2005 07:47 AMThe belgium painter René Magritte explored this theme in the 30's...but instead of a laptop, a canvas!
Very interesting!
I guess u must have 2 laptops and 1 USB pen, right? assuming ur Camera USB wire isn't long enough
Posted by isaac at April 7, 2005 08:46 PMgreat job ! what's you'r camera model ?
Posted by Kamira at April 7, 2005 09:00 PMWow.... very clever. A real fun photo to explore and ponder.
Posted by CJB at April 13, 2005 05:53 PMYeah I have seen this concept done before, but I have to say that I've never seen it look as good as this. Very well done... great shot.
Posted by crankyT at April 14, 2005 07:39 AMSTIKFAS ! ! ! ! !
Posted by chip at April 17, 2005 03:30 PMyep..its really nice indeed. The concept is really cool..awesome.
