wow, i really like this picture... the colors in the sky and the way the lighting is on the house...

Beautiful.

Posted by Amy at April 3, 2005 01:43 AM

awesome shot. seems like someone is watching us from inside, but who knows from where. i also love the angles at which the walls and windows are at. makes it look that much more ominous. great color too. i mean colour. sorry, i'm from cali!

Posted by rich at April 3, 2005 01:44 AM

Boy, you are getting quite cloudy these days. Nice photo. The red light in that window fits very well with the bloody clouds. That house also looks amazing.

Posted by SlicesOfLife at April 3, 2005 01:56 AM

Wow! At first I thought "haunted house." So much for my artistic critique. Great shot - I like the rich, dark amber clouds and the whole scene. It's a very different feel from what you normally do.

Right now I am watching “The 100 Scariest Movie Moments” on TV and then I see this photo. How frightening! This looks like a still from a horror movie, especially with the bird flying high above. What a photo! I am continually impressed with your work.

Posted by Michael Smith at April 3, 2005 03:14 AM

Wow. I love the stark contrast of the grey building and neutral colors of the buildings to the intensity of sky and window. The asymetry is pleasing, too.

Posted by Aredridel at April 3, 2005 03:29 AM

wow that's a great shot, straight out of a harry potter movie

Posted by baahjun at April 3, 2005 04:04 AM

Wow! The lighting is amazing!

It creats such an ominous mood...yet the clouds seem to offer the smallest bit of hope. And as if the house isn't eerie enough, there is a single, dim, solitary light with all the other windows dark and haunting. Almost sends shivers down my spine!

Amazing shot!! Into my favorites.

Another ddoi signiture sky. Nice colors.

Posted by kenny at April 3, 2005 04:27 AM

WOW SUGI!!
this has got to be your best picture yet. Great mood, great colors, perfect subject! that house looks so erie and ehances the mood tenfold. great shot. keep it up!

Posted by bluemonkey at April 3, 2005 04:39 AM

WOW! Beautiful!

Very Surreal, it reminds me of the movie "What dreams may come"

Yet again Sam, well done!

the pop-up version of the picture helps, but fitting the picture to the edge of the window makes it look like a portion of a bigger picture instead of the entire picture. perhaps a good border around the picture (like matting a photograph) may help make it look more whole, although that may not be what you intend to do since it's more about the presentation of the picture (color of border, width of border, etc.) instead of the picture itself. nonetheless, almost great photographs. :)

Posted by Ivan at April 3, 2005 04:54 AM

I really like this shot, especially the solitary bird at the highest point of the picture. Is the house empty? It looks like it, except for the light in the upstairs window - although that mirrors the colour of the sky so closely it's almost as if the roof has a hole in.

I also appreciate being able to view the image smaller so that I am able to get an idea of the picture and composition as a whole, but also pick up the details on the larger image.

Posted by emma at April 3, 2005 06:06 AM

It was really great of you to have an alternative version to see this photo. When looking at it without having to scroll, you can really understand it better.
And then it shows much better that this is a great photo!
Loved the reflection of the light in the one window.

Posted by Kjetil at April 3, 2005 07:04 AM

Best two details?
- the only light in the house is the reflection from across the street
- the bird ;o)

beautiful

Posted by Aram at April 3, 2005 07:32 AM

nice cloud and bird

Posted by eunduk at April 3, 2005 07:43 AM

i love the constrast. and how there is this ominous thing going on. haha scary movie?

Posted by jenny at April 3, 2005 08:04 AM

You mean Richmond, people usually enjoy correcting your typos on here so I thought I'd get to it first this morning...
cool nonetheless.. looks photoshopped, but adds to it...

Posted by Emily at April 3, 2005 09:04 AM

i really like this one. it does help to see the whole picture. well done.

Posted by dan simpson at April 3, 2005 09:39 AM

this house is waiting for a casting call - spooky white picket fence

the slightly burnt in corners really give it an eerie personality - and lighten up that central third of the house

!!!

Posted by eleni at April 3, 2005 09:47 AM

this is an amazing scene. i would say photo but the image is so dynamic that i feel like it should move or that something should happen in it. it may just be me, but still the effect is rare for my tastes.

Posted by mike at April 3, 2005 10:36 AM

Beautiful house and sky. I like the lighting and the little orange in the window. However, I am really shocked you didn't center the house more. I mean, I was thrown back. Wow. he didn't center it! Anyway, nice work - besides the centering

Posted by Skauce at April 3, 2005 10:55 AM

Wow. My friend told me about your pictures here and what she told me was a complete understatement. Seriously, these pictures are totally amazing, I wish I were as good as you. This one is b-e-a-utiful. x two.

Posted by diana at April 3, 2005 11:03 AM

definatly puts off the vibe of a rather unpleasent sunday... in a comforting kinda way.
totally one of my fav's from the last few weeks... helps me put imagery to my recent contradictory beliefs in the spirit world.
well done.

Creepy image! It looks great! Those clouds look awesome!

Posted by Jorge Lesmes at April 3, 2005 11:15 AM

nice work!

Posted by designguy at April 3, 2005 11:30 AM

Perhaps a smidgen too much sky there, but man, what a house!

Ammitiville horror anyone? Love it.

Posted by Stray at April 3, 2005 11:39 AM

Beautifully gloomy

Posted by rz at April 3, 2005 11:47 AM

great pic...

Posted by avp. at April 3, 2005 11:49 AM

It's not too big on a 1024 resolution.
I like the way the glow of the light inside matches the warm sky.

Dear Sam:
You continue to amaze; missed you yesterday.
A semi-shut-in you provide a high light daily.
Thanks so much.

This conveys a palpable sense of foreboding. Very striking picture.

Posted by Jim M. at April 3, 2005 12:28 PM

Gothic looking! I like it. Dark and dramatic! The light inside quite sets the house off!

Posted by Phil at April 3, 2005 12:30 PM

Well, the sky is very pretty. But I think the photo could be improved if the house was more centered (positioning and cropping maybe?). But the sky is beautiful, and I like the stains under the window of the house. It almost doesnt seem to fit in the surrounding landscape.

Posted by Fellow Eskimo at April 3, 2005 01:22 PM

Wow, haunted. That house definately looks haunted and creepy. I love it =D Especially how the colour of the sky can be found inside one of the windows ;)

Posted by Raffi at April 3, 2005 01:24 PM

Incredible...the photo that brought me out of lurking :)

Posted by rx at April 3, 2005 01:50 PM

This is freakeshly amaizing!

Posted by lallaaaaaaaaa at April 3, 2005 01:50 PM

hi Sam! i check your photolog almost everyday, and i love your work, but this one is my favorite, it reminds me of Tim Burton's movies...

Posted by sarah at April 3, 2005 02:13 PM

am i the first to comment? i doubt it! anyway, this is a superb image - atmospheric and sinister. it's totally made by the light in the window complimenting the colours in the sky. i take my hat off to you!

Posted by bennybedlam at April 3, 2005 02:20 PM

Creepy, but awesome. Love your work!

Posted by Sami at April 3, 2005 03:59 PM

The house is very good image. The sky is a very good image. Together they make a great photo. Wonderful.

Posted by Scott at April 3, 2005 04:08 PM

I think this image is beautiful and scary at the same time. It reminds me of a Tim Burton movie. As usual, great job :)

Posted by Alessandra at April 3, 2005 04:11 PM

Wow! so this is were the Adam's Family have moved to!! fantastic image.

Posted by Graeme at April 3, 2005 04:38 PM

I love everything that's been mentioned. I also love the bit of flame-like light in the top righthand corner -- really does look like fire.

Posted by Gloria at April 3, 2005 05:02 PM

No, the photo is not too big. The larger they are the better I like them.

Posted by Valerij at April 3, 2005 05:12 PM

Great shoot. I really love this shot its awesome. One of the best I have seen. Straight out of a scary movie or something.

What a stunning sky, and the house isn't bad either!

Posted by justin at April 3, 2005 07:01 PM

I simply love these sky-pictures of yours. The colours are gorgeous. And you always sneak in a bird or another tiny detail.

Posted by Kat at April 3, 2005 07:58 PM

very sweet! looks haunted!

Posted by Ayan at April 3, 2005 08:24 PM

I disagree with the comments saying it would be better if the house was centered. I find it more interesting of center. Showing the building to the left gives the house a "squeezed" feeling, making it even more disturbing. And, placing the house off center gives off an uneven, off-balance feel that fits the subject well. This is a great shot. I wish the skies in southern California looked like this!

Posted by Matt at April 3, 2005 08:35 PM

I think this is possibly the best image on this site. I take it a polarizer was used here. Stunning shot man, well done.

Posted by Tommy at April 3, 2005 08:43 PM

Hey, I've been inside that house (both sides). There were 2 art galleries on the ground floor. I've no idea if they're still there, since they didn't believe in advertising (which is one of the reasons I no longer show there). Not an unspooky place inside, either.

Posted by Sarah at April 3, 2005 10:50 PM

It looks like a hounted mansion!!

Posted by tetsu at April 3, 2005 11:14 PM

A scary and imposing house.

Posted by __earth at April 4, 2005 05:10 AM

like it, very striking.

Posted by miles at April 4, 2005 01:12 PM

Creepy as hell. The orange in the window really puts it over. Love it.

Posted by Sean R at April 4, 2005 02:52 PM

Everyone keeps saying something about a horror movie....but the first thing I thought of when I saw this was 'Tim Burton'.

Posted by Jeremy at April 5, 2005 01:44 AM

If you didn't indicate the photo's location I would never have recognized this as taking place in an urban setting (this house is located right on the edge of Toronto's downtown core w/ skyscrappers just to the east). You did a great job of framing the photo to exclude all the modernity surrounding this building.
I believe the 'house' is a business isn't it? That would explain why the lights are off at this time...

I might be in the minority here but this dosn't seem horror-like to me...rather my first impression was that it was hopeful(possibly due to seeing the gorgeous sky and then having to scroll downward.)
The way Toronto's been developing lately I am surprised this building is still standing!

Posted by jay at April 5, 2005 01:06 PM

You have a great photografic eye. This house seem's to have stood the test of time and won. Great pic.

Posted by Joe Pit at April 5, 2005 04:56 PM

Really an amazing photo! Everything about it is good. For instance the tiny orange detail in one of the upper windows. Congratulations!

Posted by Wim van der Meij at April 7, 2005 03:23 AM

Awsome!!! I really dig this one. It's like a happy version of poltergeist!

Posted by adam at April 8, 2005 12:18 AM

Amazing, simply breathtaking, it looks so haunted and alone.

Posted by shannon-elizabeth at June 9, 2005 08:39 AM

I lived in this house for 6 months. There are galleries on both sides.

I had a garden in the front and in the back.

The back of the house was forever sinking into the ground.

It was built sometime in the 1880's and is owned by a guy who would remind one of Mr. Lehy from Trailer Park Boys.
