Comments: torture store

I like this alot, Sam... looks very symmetrical with the vertically aligned bikes. Great colors. The black chest and black bike, along with the black bottom part of the door, brings everything together. I am attempting a lot of macro stuff on my site right now.

Bit scary.

Reminds me of that little boy from Toy Story 1. That kid who always chopped up his toys and made them into hiddeous monster looking things. Maybe this is what he does now that hes grown up. Either way I wouldn't want to go inside that place.

Good photo of a creepy building. I like the orange truck reflected in the window.

Sure, that's where you take your bikes to get "fixed."

A very lazy Marcel Duchamps ? The installation did catch your eye/lens !

A graveyard for bicycles, I wonder what they have got hidden in the treasure chest. This is a great photograph, makes we want to know more.

What an interesting shot. I bet that the person who runs this "store" would be a character-and-a-half.

Posted by john at February 7, 2005 08:20 AM

This is a bike repair shop (if you can call it that) - I think the proprietor is a fellow named Ivan... bit of a chop shop but I hear the prices are good if you're looking for something quick and dirty. Emphasis on the dirty.

What an ugly place!!!, good picture, It would be more interesting with the owner of that mess interacting with the crap around. I am very curious about who owns that, how has that become such a disaster and what is the purpose of hanging bikes forever. Nothing is going to happen for the next years there unless a transnational company buys the place and build a horrible mcdonalds instead. I guess that some people at some point of their lives become hopeless and loose their sense of life and their environment dies as their minds do too.

It's a chop shop. during the night they go around toronto and chop the forgotten bikes off the bike rings and bring them back here where they begin to piece them together.
went in their once to look for a bike part and was not well recieved.
suffice it to say I dont think they cater to off the street customers.
an intersting place for sure.
here's my question. how do they afford to keep this space in this location? poses some interesting answers.

Posted by Alix at February 7, 2005 09:06 AM

I want to buy what they're selling.

Posted by travis at February 7, 2005 09:43 AM

It looks like Igor's Bike Shop.

Posted by Dusty at February 7, 2005 09:46 AM

I agree with Scott, it totally looks like the kind of place that Sid from Toy Story would own as an adult. What a creepy place. I don't know if I'd be willing to venture inside!

Posted by sherry at February 7, 2005 10:27 AM

It's Igor's bike shop, not a "chop shop". Comments like that would make Igor very angry with you, considering he gets hassled, and occassionally arrested, for chop-shopping.

Posted by Parkdale at February 7, 2005 11:22 AM

I don't know if they just chop up bikes. Looks to me on the right barrel they have chopped up part of a Storm Trooper's armour.

Posted by . at February 7, 2005 11:22 AM

When in doubt, it's an antique shop.

Posted by wookiee at February 7, 2005 11:45 AM

This is right across from my office... nice job.

Hey Sam, don't you ever go north of College? Why not come up to my neck of the woods - Yonge and St Clair - for a change of scenery? Linda

Posted by linda at February 7, 2005 03:01 PM

Now this is great, *thumbs up for original content* My mom has 2 chests like that in our house, when she used to tour with the symphony orchestra all around the globe.

If you want a treat, go to College & Spadina at about 5pm (don't know if this is accurate, it's becoming later and later every day now) when everything starts getting pink/orange, the hues on the CN tower are SPECTACULAR, as well as the rest of the scene from that angle (facing the CN tower at that time of day).

Kinda looks like a bike family tree...notice they get larger the higher they are...

Posted by Erick Peirson at February 7, 2005 03:38 PM

Did you see the japanese samurai ghost with huge cleaver peeking through the porthole of the door?

Posted by maijin at February 7, 2005 04:04 PM

ooh i want that orange shoveling sign on the door!
-and heh, nice, a school bell on the top of a bike reparer store.

nice shot, reminds me of grand theft auto, theres a store like that in the game, it looks more gang affiliated though.

Posted by Hugh at February 7, 2005 06:02 PM

This place looks like a nice artwork, great shot WVS!

Interesting Igor anecdote: http://www.imparte.com/archives/00000209.html

Yes, that's Igor's Bike Clinic for sure. He's a brilliant mechanic but has a short fuse. You can get some sweet deals from there if you can get on his good side. Igor and I share a mutual friend and I got amazing service from the man. This is not a place to browse, he will get frustrated. Go in when you know what you want and dont waste his time. Also, bring a hot girl and get guaranteed great service.

Total chopshop! He buys stolen bikes for $10 and sells them for a few hundred, that is how he stays in business.
And when you are in there trying to buy YOUR stolen bike back for way more than he paid for it, he likes to regale you with stories about beating people up. Yuck.

Posted by Joan at February 9, 2005 10:43 AM

This is very cool. Found objects art. It reminds me of a display at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati. *thumbs up*

Posted by MsCantBWrong at February 10, 2005 04:11 AM

hA! I bought a bike here - very cheap - I almost certain this guy sells stolen bikes. His name is Igor - he used to have a baby pitbull - holy smokes that was one crazy bikeshop!

Posted by George at April 18, 2005 09:51 PM

if there was ever any question:

I live in this neighborhood, so when my bike "went missing" last Friday night, I strongly suspected I didn't have far to look.

A block from the scene of the crime, not more than 24 hours later, my boyfriend spots a young woman riding my bike. The woman, drops Igor's name and together they pay him a visit. Igor, of course, isn't a bit shocked... but a pesky occupational hazzard.

That dumpy bike shop beside the historic BATES AND DODDS FUNERAL HOME, what an eyesore that shop is, cool photo though

This IGOR guy is about to get it very soon. I promise. He has messed with too many people. I have some buddies who are going to take care of him soon!!
