My pulse began to race, got hot flashes trying to figure out what that was... until I saw the title. Much more bening than the freaky experimental treatments/punishments I was coming up with.
Posted by Joel at February 2, 2005 12:36 AMI never did like 5 pin bowling, but that places makes me dislike it even more. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Whitby psych is a depressing morbid place that leaves me feeling disturbed everytime i see it.
Other than my distaste for the subject matter, its a good shot the detail is amazing. The crumbled bits on the floor and the faded chiped paint. I can feel the grain of everything, but I really dislike that place.
Anyone for a game of 10 pin??? now thats a fun game.
Posted by scott at February 2, 2005 02:07 AMI was trying to scale this. Was this the size of my hand or a large truck? Then I saw the title. Very nice. Great colors. The rubbish on the ground is perfect for this composition. My Canon S410 point and shoot isn't quite up to this. :-)
Posted by Abe Savona at February 2, 2005 02:22 AMNice one! :)
Posted by Hans Botje at February 2, 2005 06:20 AMVery nice shot
I like the texture on the left
I did exactly the same thing as Joel. actually didn't get it until I read his comment & checked out the title. lol. you obviously have a bunch of sickos that frequent your site! ;) great work as always!
Posted by jooles at February 2, 2005 09:22 AMAh, the basement bowling alley, been there.
I love this series, Sam, you really capture the feeling of this place.
Posted by Re-Pete at February 2, 2005 09:52 AMThis is like a return to the wonderful humour of the days of a daily dose of generic photos.
You only need to mention "abandoned" and visions of an army of photographers swarming the place are brought to mind.
I think Whitby is now an iconic Toronto reference, it fits alongside your other classic but more mainstream visions like the Distillery District, train stations and your lomo-eyed view of the streetcars & moving inhabitants of Queen St.
Long live the Whitby, fully repopulated in its apparent abandonment!
I see the chin strap and the forehead collar. My only question is, does the patient face up or down?
;~)
Nice subject: good contrast of shapes and textures. However, the foreground appears to be artificially blurred (too much).
Posted by Kevin at February 2, 2005 11:48 AMknowing there's a large number of photobloggers in the toronto area, it impresses me a lot that only ddoi is producing this stunning images. is this place for public access, or you creep around? =)
Posted by ren at February 2, 2005 12:37 PMExcellent Work . . .I like your photos . .
Posted by shaar at February 2, 2005 12:55 PMthis one is quite ambiguious. not bad. it indeed is some bowling device, but I think it definitely can pass for those guillotine things...ya know...place the person's neck on the rail like part in the center, install a retractable axe and *chop*......(try reading last chapter of a tale of two cities and see for yourselves). orange used to be my absolute favourite colour when I was a child ;)
Posted by Peggy at February 2, 2005 03:52 PMI like this one. It's better than some of the distillery district ones we had from ~ two days ago. Good job!
Posted by Abid at February 2, 2005 04:42 PMIt looks like an orange fish.
I like your pictures, Sam. I've been visiting your site regularty since the summer, never wrote a comment before. These pics from the psychiatric hospital make me feel sad. But I guess that's your goal, to elicit emotions from the viewer.
Love it.
Very retro and cool colour. Nice shot.
Who puts a bowling alley in a pysch facility? Isn't this re-development heaven property in Toronto? Here in Melbourne our Pentridge Prison was redeveloped as a townhouse estate.
You barely ever see abadoned buildings locally.
Posted by qubik at February 2, 2005 08:08 PMthis is the best one from whitby's so far.
one question..was this for the patients?
Posted by tanner at February 2, 2005 08:24 PMI've seen the title and the comments but it still just looks like some kinda misguided torture device to me. :D But then the only bowling I know about involves cricket so...
Posted by Marc at February 2, 2005 09:37 PMVery nice shot!!. What were you doing there?
Posted by Fer at February 2, 2005 10:35 PMthis is great. i think bowling has made me crazier whenever i've attempted it.
Posted by jonathan at February 2, 2005 11:49 PMwhy not show the whole alley?
I felt mystified at first thinking it's some marco shot.
This reminds me a lot of something I saw featured on cbcradio3.com...wait a minute...I'm not sure but is that how I got to looking at this website...I beleive it's been some time now. Was that you I saw there?
good work
Posted by RONNYBOY at February 3, 2005 01:22 PMi couldn't figure out what that was at first visit. Only on second time through I caught the name and the scale of the object snapped into view. I first thought it was some sort of wood planing tool on a table with debris under it. Nice!
Posted by mike w at February 4, 2005 02:15 AMVery cool shot Sam, I love the colours and DoF.
Posted by miles at February 4, 2005 05:31 PMLove this. Great lines. Very interesting. I'd most likely be tempted to take that and turn it into a coffee table or something...
